Amphibians

Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates that typically spend part of their lives in water and part on land. This diverse group includes frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts. Most amphibians begin life as aquatic larvae and undergo metamorphosis as they mature. Their moist, permeable skin and close dependence on clean water make amphibians especially sensitive to environmental changes—and valuable indicators of ecosystem health.

All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads. Scientifically, toads are just a specific type of frog belonging to the order Anura. The distinction between them is mostly informal and based on physical traits, meaning the everyday split into “frogs” and “toads” has no strict evolutionary or taxonomic basis.

Frogs

Frogs are familiar amphibians found in ponds, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and even deserts throughout North America. Known for their powerful hind legs and distinctive calls, frogs are often easiest to identify by their appearance, habitat, and breeding songs. They also play an important role in local ecosystems as both predators and prey.

Toads

Toads are sturdy, mostly land-dwelling amphibians recognized by their dry, bumpy skin, short legs, and distinctive calls. Found in forests, grasslands, gardens, wetlands, and even deserts, they usually return to ponds and other shallow water to breed. Toads are valuable predators that help control insects and other small invertebrates.

Salamanders and Newts

All newts are salamanders, but not all salamanders are newts.

Salamanders

Salamanders are secretive amphibians commonly found in forests, wetlands, streams, and other cool, moist habitats. With their long bodies, tails, and remarkable variety of colors and patterns, they can range from tiny woodland species to surprisingly large aquatic forms. North America is especially rich in salamander diversity, with species adapted to life on land, in water, and even underground.

Lungless Salamanders

Lungless salamanders are a diverse group of amphibians that breathe entirely through their moist skin and the tissues lining their mouths rather than through lungs. Most live in cool, damp forests, under rocks, logs, and leaf litter, where moisture is essential for both breathing and survival.

Newts

Newts are small, semi-aquatic salamanders often found in forests, wetlands, ponds, and slow-moving streams. While many salamanders secrete mild toxins, newts produce much higher levels of dangerous skin chemicals. Pacific newts (Taricha) produce deadly tetrodotoxin, the same chemical found in pufferfish. Newts belong to a specific subfamily (Pleurodelinae) within the true salamander family, distinguished by unique physical traits, lifestyle habits, and defensive adaptations.
