The Gulf Coast toad (Incilius nebulifer) is a sturdy, heavily marked toad of the south-central United States and northeastern Mexico. It is especially familiar in Texas and Louisiana, where it appears in yards, parks, pastures, drainage corridors, and other places that combine shelter with seasonal water.
This adaptable amphibian is primarily nocturnal. Adults often remain hidden during hot or dry weather, emerging after sunset or following rain to hunt insects. During the breeding season, calling males may gather around temporary pools, ditches, ponds, and other shallow water.
Older publications may identify the Gulf Coast toad as Bufo valliceps. Taxonomic revisions separated northern populations as Incilius nebulifer, while the name Incilius valliceps is now generally applied to a related toad farther south. Scientific names in older field guides should therefore be interpreted with care.
Quick Identification

Appearance and Field Marks
The Gulf Coast toad has the compact build typical of a true toad: a broad head, thick body, relatively short limbs, and granular or warty skin. Its most useful field marks are on the head. Raised cranial crests extend along the upper edges of the eyes and turn toward the large parotoid glands behind them. Viewed from above, these ridges give the head an angular, strongly sculpted appearance.
Dorsal color varies considerably. Individuals may be nearly uniform gray-brown or patterned with dark brown, olive, or blackish blotches bordered by lighter pigment. The warts within the darker patches can appear reddish or orange-brown. Many individuals have a narrow cream or yellowish line down the middle of the back, but this feature should not be used by itself.
The eyes generally have horizontal pupils and bronze or golden-brown irises. The parotoid glands are elongated rather than round. These glands produce defensive secretions and should be observed without squeezing or unnecessarily handling the animal.

Size and Measurements
Adult Gulf Coast toads are commonly about 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) in snout-to-vent length. Females tend to average larger and heavier than males, although size alone cannot reliably determine sex. Newly transformed juveniles are much smaller and may be difficult to distinguish from young individuals of other regional toads.
Field measurements of amphibians usually refer to snout-to-vent length rather than total length. Do not stretch the legs for measurement, and minimize handling because amphibian skin is permeable and easily damaged.
Range and Distribution
In the United States, the Gulf Coast toad occurs mainly from southeastern Mississippi across Louisiana and through much of eastern and central Texas. Its range continues southward into northeastern and eastern Mexico. Published maps may differ near the southern limits because of past changes in the treatment of Incilius nebulifer and the closely related Incilius valliceps.
The species is broadly associated with the western Gulf Coastal Plain and adjoining inland regions, rather than only with beaches or salt marshes. It can occur far from the immediate coastline wherever suitable shelter and breeding water are available.

Habitat
Gulf Coast toads occupy an unusually broad selection of habitats. They occur in coastal prairie, open woodland, brushland, savanna, agricultural land, suburban neighborhoods, and urban parks. Moist ground, loose soil, leaf litter, logs, stones, burrows, or human-made cover provide daytime refuges.
Breeding habitat includes shallow ponds, roadside ditches, flooded fields, drainage basins, livestock tanks, marsh edges, and quiet portions of larger water bodies. Temporary pools can be valuable because they may contain fewer fish, although rapidly drying water can also reduce reproductive success.
Around homes, adults sometimes shelter beneath porches, planters, landscape materials, or outdoor equipment. Porch lights can create profitable feeding areas by attracting moths and other insects.

Behavior
This toad is most active at night and during humid or rainy conditions. By day, it generally hides in a burrow or beneath cover to reduce water loss and exposure to predators. An individual may repeatedly use the same sheltered area when local conditions remain favorable.
When threatened, a Gulf Coast toad may crouch, inflate its body, or release milky defensive secretions from its parotoid glands. These secretions discourage many predators and can irritate human eyes or mouths. They may also cause serious symptoms in dogs that bite or mouth a toad. Keep pets away, and wash hands after unavoidable contact.
Cold or prolonged dry conditions greatly reduce surface activity. Toads survive unfavorable periods in protected retreats and emerge when temperature and moisture permit.
Diet and Hunting
Adult Gulf Coast toads are opportunistic predators of small animals. Their diet consists mainly of insects and other invertebrates, including beetles, ants, termites, moths, flies, crickets, roaches, spiders, and small snails. Exact prey varies with habitat, season, and local availability.
A hunting toad usually sits still and watches for movement. When prey comes within range, it lunges and captures the animal by rapidly extending its sticky tongue. Large prey may be pushed into the mouth with the forefeet. Artificial lights can concentrate prey, which explains why toads frequently forage near lighted buildings.
Tadpoles feed differently from adults. They graze on algae, microorganisms, decaying plant material, and other organic matter in the water, contributing to nutrient cycling within temporary pools.

Vocalizations
The male’s advertisement call is a loud, sustained trill. A calling chorus can carry a considerable distance on humid nights and may sound mechanical when many males overlap. Call speed and pitch vary with temperature, body size, and the condition of the calling animal.
Males call from shallow water, muddy margins, floating vegetation, or exposed banks. The sound is most likely after warm rain during the breeding season. Listening for the sustained trill is often more effective than searching visually, but neighboring toad species should be considered before making an identification by sound alone.
Breeding and Nesting
Gulf Coast toads do not construct nests in the manner of birds. Instead, adults move to water when warm temperatures and rainfall create suitable breeding conditions. The season is extended in the southern part of the range and often peaks after substantial spring or summer rains.
Males may arrive first and establish calling positions. A male clasps a receptive female behind the forelimbs in a mating embrace called amplexus. Fertilization occurs externally as the female deposits her eggs. Crowded choruses can involve active competition among males, and pairs may shift position through shallow water while eggs are released.
Reproduction
Eggs are laid in long gelatinous strings, often wrapped around submerged vegetation or resting on the bottom in shallow water. A female can produce many eggs, but output varies with her size, physical condition, and environmental circumstances.
The eggs hatch into small, dark tadpoles. Development is strongly influenced by water temperature, food, crowding, and the risk that the pool will dry. Metamorphosis may occur within several weeks under favorable warm conditions, but timing is not fixed. Newly transformed toadlets often leave the water in groups and disperse into moist shoreline vegetation.
Eggs and larvae face heavy mortality from aquatic insects, fish, drying pools, poor water quality, and other hazards. Producing numerous eggs helps offset the low probability that any one offspring will survive to adulthood.

Similar Species
American toad: The American toad generally has kidney-shaped parotoid glands separated from the cranial crests or connected by a short spur. Its typical range barely approaches that of the Gulf Coast toad, but the head structures remain more useful than geography where uncertainty exists.
Fowler’s toad: Fowler’s toad often has multiple small warts within each dark dorsal spot and comparatively weak cranial crests. Gulf Coast toads usually look more heavily ridged across the head.
Southern toad: The southern toad has prominent knobs on its cranial crests. Its normal distribution lies mainly east of the Gulf Coast toad’s core range, though identification near regional boundaries should rely on several features.
Great Plains toad: This species often shows sharply defined greenish or dark dorsal blotches edged in pale pigment and lacks the Gulf Coast toad’s strongly developed pattern of head crests.
Cane toad: The introduced cane toad is usually larger, with extremely large, triangular parotoid glands and a less intricately crested head. Its established United States populations are centered in Florida, outside the normal native range of the Gulf Coast toad.
Conservation
The Gulf Coast toad remains widespread and locally common, including in altered landscapes. Its tolerance of gardens, ranchland, drainage systems, and cities provides some resilience, but local populations still depend on safe refuges and water suitable for larval development.
Potential pressures include wetland loss, road mortality, prolonged drought, pesticides, contaminated runoff, invasive predators, and disease. Fish introduced into small breeding ponds may consume eggs or tadpoles. Temporary wetlands are sometimes overlooked because they hold water for only part of the year, yet they can be important breeding sites.
Property owners can help by reducing pesticide use, retaining leaf litter and native cover, protecting shallow wetlands, and preventing pets from disturbing amphibians. Any backyard pond should provide gently sloping exits so newly transformed toadlets and other wildlife can leave safely.
Field Identification Tips
- Confirm that the animal has a true toad’s dry-looking, warty skin and large parotoid glands.
- Examine the head from above without picking up the toad. Look for strong cranial ridges connected closely with the glands behind the eyes.
- Note the overall pattern, including dark irregular blotches and any thin pale line along the spine.
- Consider location. A heavily crested toad in eastern Texas or Louisiana is a stronger candidate than one far outside the documented range.
- Use calls as supporting evidence during warm, rainy weather, but compare recordings when other toads are calling nearby.
- Photograph the back, side of the head, and habitat. These views preserve the most useful identification features.
Avoid handling whenever possible. If a toad must be moved from immediate danger, use clean, wet hands free of soap, lotion, insect repellent, and sunscreen, then release it only a short distance away in safe cover.
