The gray tree frog is a small, adaptable tree-dwelling frog of eastern and central North America. The name usually refers to the gray tree frog, Dryophytes versicolor, but field observers face an important complication: Cope’s gray tree frog, Dryophytes chrysoscelis, looks nearly identical. The two may occur together and generally cannot be separated reliably by color or pattern alone.
This guide focuses on D. versicolor while noting where identification overlaps with Cope’s gray tree frog. In most encounters, the breeding call is the best practical clue. Outside the calling season, recording an animal simply as a “gray tree frog complex” is often the most responsible field identification.

Quick Identification
- Shape: Compact frog with long limbs and conspicuously expanded toe pads.
- Color: Variable gray, brown, green, or mottled, often changing with temperature, light, and surroundings.
- Pattern: Irregular dark blotches on the back and a darker bar or patch around the eye.
- Hidden color: Bright yellow to orange on the inner thighs, usually visible only when the frog jumps or stretches.
- Skin: Finely granular or slightly warty rather than smooth.
- Call: A resonant, musical trill; typically slower and more evenly pulsed than the call of Cope’s gray tree frog.
Appearance and Field Marks
Gray tree frogs have broad heads, rounded snouts, large eyes, and adhesive discs at the ends of the fingers and toes. These toe pads help them climb bark, leaves, walls, and windows. The fingers are only slightly webbed, while the hind toes have more noticeable webbing.
Despite the name, an individual may be pearl gray, charcoal, tan, brown, pale green, or a mixture of these colors. Changes are gradual rather than instantaneous and do not always match the background perfectly. Most individuals show an irregular, lichen-like pattern that provides excellent camouflage on tree bark.
A pale patch beneath each eye is often visible, and the eye has a horizontal pupil. The concealed surfaces of the hind legs are vivid yellow or orange, sometimes marked with dark pigment. This “flash color” appears suddenly when the frog leaps and disappears again when it lands. The belly is pale and somewhat granular. Breeding males commonly develop a darker gray or brown throat, whereas females usually retain a paler throat.

Size and Measurements
Adults are generally about 1.25–2 inches (3.2–5.1 cm) in snout-to-vent length. Females tend to be larger and heavier-bodied than males, although size overlaps. Recently transformed froglets are much smaller and may be bright green before developing a more typical mottled pattern. Take measurements without stretching or restraining the animal unnecessarily.
Range and Distribution
Dryophytes versicolor occurs through a broad portion of northeastern and central North America, including parts of southern Canada and the eastern United States. Its distribution extends westward into portions of the Great Plains and southward into areas where it overlaps extensively with Cope’s gray tree frog. Local occurrence can be patchy where suitable woodland and fish-free or lightly vegetated breeding water are limited.
Published range maps should be interpreted cautiously because the two gray tree frogs were historically confused, and visual records may not identify the species conclusively. Regional call surveys, genetic work, and chromosome analysis have improved distributional knowledge. Habitat
Gray tree frogs inhabit deciduous and mixed forests, woodland edges, wooded wetlands, swamps, orchards, parks, and well-vegetated suburban areas. Adults spend much of their time above ground in trees and shrubs but descend to breed.
Breeding sites include temporary woodland pools, marshy pond margins, flooded ditches, shallow wetlands, and small permanent ponds. Sites without abundant predatory fish are usually more favorable for eggs and tadpoles. Outside the breeding season, the frogs may shelter beneath loose bark, in tree cavities, among leaves, or in crevices around buildings.

Behavior
These frogs are mainly active from dusk through the night, especially during warm, humid, or rainy weather. By day they often remain motionless against bark or foliage, relying on camouflage. They climb well, and adults may forage well above eye level.
In cold regions, gray tree frogs overwinter on land beneath leaf litter, roots, logs, or other protective cover. They can tolerate partial freezing by producing compounds that limit damage to their cells. Emergence timing varies with latitude, elevation, and spring temperatures.
Diet and Hunting
Adult gray tree frogs eat a varied assortment of small invertebrates, including moths, beetles, flies, ants, crickets, spiders, and caterpillars. They usually hunt by waiting quietly and lunging or jumping when prey comes within reach. Their sticky tongue helps capture small, mobile prey.
Tadpoles feed primarily on algae, microorganisms, decaying plant material, and other organic matter. Diet changes with food availability, developmental stage, and competition within the pool.

Vocalizations
The male’s advertisement call is a short, resonant trill delivered repeatedly from vegetation near water. Listeners often describe it as musical or birdlike. Calling may begin before sunset during favorable weather and continue well into the night.
Cope’s gray tree frog gives a faster, harsher-sounding trill. Call speed changes with temperature in both species, so compare a single recording with local reference calls made under similar conditions. Recording several calls and noting air or water temperature can improve identification. Choruses may also include spring peepers, chorus frogs, green frogs, and American toads.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding generally occurs from spring into summer, with timing later in northern areas. Warm rain and nighttime temperatures stimulate movement toward wetlands. Males call from low branches, shrubs, emergent plants, or the water’s edge. Rival males may call more intensely or occasionally engage in brief physical interactions.
Gray tree frogs do not build a nest. During amplexus, a male clasps the female behind the forelimbs as she deposits eggs in shallow water. Eggs are released in loose groups or small surface films, often among aquatic vegetation. A female may lay several hundred to more than a thousand eggs, but clutch size varies with her size and condition.
Reproduction
Fertilization is external. The small eggs have dark upper surfaces and gelatinous coverings that swell in water. Hatching commonly occurs within several days, depending strongly on water temperature and other conditions.
Tadpoles have deep tail fins and may show reddish, orange, or golden tones in the tail. They develop in warm, productive shallows, where rapid growth can be important if a temporary pool is drying. Metamorphosis often occurs within roughly one to two months, although cool temperatures, crowding, food supply, and hydroperiod can lengthen or shorten development. Newly transformed froglets leave the water after the tail is absorbed and disperse into surrounding vegetation.

Similar Species
Cope’s gray tree frog: This is the principal identification challenge. D. chrysoscelis overlaps in size, color, toe-pad shape, thigh color, and habitat. Its advertisement call is generally faster and buzzier. Gray tree frogs are tetraploid, with four chromosome sets, while Cope’s gray tree frogs are diploid, with two; chromosome or genetic examination provides a definitive distinction when calls are unavailable.
Bird-voiced treefrog: This southeastern wetland species is usually smaller and often shows pale markings beneath the eye, but it can resemble a gray tree frog. Its call consists of clear, birdlike notes rather than a sustained trill.
Barking treefrog: Typically larger and more robust, this southern species often has rounder dorsal spots and a distinctive barking call. Its geographic range overlaps only in part.
Squirrel tree frog: Usually smoother-skinned and more slender, with less extensive orange-yellow color on the thighs. It is primarily a southeastern species and has different calls.
Conservation
The gray tree frog remains widespread and is locally common, but populations can be affected by wetland drainage, forest clearing, road mortality, pollution, pesticides, disease, and the introduction of predatory fish. Because adults need terrestrial woodland while larvae require suitable water, conserving only the breeding pool is not enough.
Useful habitat management includes retaining native trees and shrubs, protecting temporary wetlands, leaving some logs and leaf litter, reducing pesticide use, and maintaining vegetated travel corridors. Outdoor lighting can alter insect activity and frog behavior, so limiting unnecessary nighttime illumination may also help.
Field Identification Tips
- Look at the feet. Large, rounded toe pads quickly separate tree frogs from many ground-dwelling frogs.
- Check the hidden thighs. Yellow or orange flash color supports identification as a gray tree frog or a close look-alike.
- Do not rely on gray coloration. Individuals may be green, tan, or brown, and color can change over time.
- Listen before approaching. A clear recording of several advertisement calls is more useful than a photograph for separating the two gray tree frogs.
- Record conditions. Note location, date, time, weather, and approximate temperature because call rate is temperature-dependent.
- Avoid overidentification. A silent gray tree frog in an overlap zone may be best reported as D. versicolor/chrysoscelis.
- Minimize handling. Amphibian skin is permeable. Observe in place when possible; if handling is necessary for authorized work, use clean, wet hands or appropriate powder-free gloves.
