The Black-spotted Newt (Notophthalmus meridionalis) is a small, localized salamander of the lower Gulf Coastal Plain. In the United States, it is associated primarily with extreme southern Texas; its range continues south through northeastern and eastern Mexico. Because it occupies shallow wetlands in landscapes where water can be highly seasonal, the species may be difficult to find even at known sites.
This newt is recognized by its olive, brown, or nearly black upper surface, scattered black spots, and yellowish to orange underside. Identification requires attention to body shape, skin texture, and color. Like other newts, it has relatively rough-looking skin, a laterally flattened tail, and short limbs. Observe it without handling: newts can release defensive skin secretions, and handling may damage their permeable skin.

Appearance and Field Marks
The Black-spotted Newt has the compact, somewhat lizardlike outline typical of newts, but it lacks scales and claws. Its head is broad enough to be noticeable without appearing disproportionately large. The eyes are small and prominent, and the snout is blunt. Four toes occur on each front foot and five on each hind foot.
Dorsal coloration varies with the individual, lighting, and skin condition. Some animals appear muted olive or greenish brown, while others are charcoal brown or almost black. The namesake spots are darker than the background and may be sharply defined or partly obscured on very dark animals. The spots are generally irregular rather than arranged in clean rows.
The belly provides an important field mark. It is usually yellowish to orange and marked with dark blotches or spots. The boundary between the darker sides and brighter belly may be uneven. Recently metamorphosed juveniles can differ somewhat from adults in color and proportions, and aquatic individuals may look darker or smoother when wet.
The tail is laterally compressed, especially in animals living or breeding in water. A low tail fin may become more evident during the aquatic breeding period. Sex is not always safely determined from a photograph. Breeding males may show a more swollen cloaca, a deeper tail, and other subtle courtship-related features, while females are often fuller-bodied when carrying eggs.

Size and Measurements
Adults are generally about 3 to 4.3 inches (7.5 to 11 centimeters) in total length, including the tail. Many encountered individuals fall near the middle of that range. The tail accounts for a substantial portion of total length, so body length alone is considerably shorter.
Juveniles and newly metamorphosed animals are smaller and more delicate. Exact field measurements can be misleading if a newt is curled, swimming, or has regenerated part of its tail. For identification, proportion and pattern are usually more useful than estimating length to the nearest fraction of an inch.
Range and Distribution
The species has a restricted North American distribution. In the United States, verified occurrence is centered in extreme southern Texas, particularly the lower Rio Grande region. Its broader range extends through suitable lowland areas of northeastern and eastern Mexico, reaching south along the Gulf-facing side of the country. Records are unevenly distributed, and the newt should not be assumed present in every wetland within the mapped range.
Dry land, agriculture, roads, drainage works, and urban development may isolate local populations. Seasonal detection also complicates surveys: a pond that appears empty during drought may hold newts after prolonged rain or when aquatic conditions return. Habitat
Black-spotted Newts use quiet freshwater habitats, including shallow ponds, marshes, flooded depressions, slow ditches, and other wetlands with little current. Suitable sites commonly contain submerged or emergent vegetation used for shelter, courtship, egg placement, and foraging. The surrounding landscape may include Tamaulipan thornscrub, open woodland, prairie, pasture, or coastal-plain vegetation.
Hydroperiod is important. Wetlands must retain water long enough for courtship, egg development, and larval growth, yet many occupied sites may be seasonal rather than permanently flooded. Fish-free ponds can be especially valuable because fish consume eggs and larvae. During dry periods, terrestrial individuals probably depend on moist refuges beneath vegetation, woody debris, soil cracks, or other protected cover.

Behavior
This newt may be aquatic for extended periods when ponds are available, but its activity changes with rainfall and water conditions. It usually moves slowly along the bottom or through vegetation, using short bursts of tail-driven swimming when disturbed. Dark coloration and spotted patterning help break up its outline among mud, leaves, stems, and submerged debris.
Individuals are most likely to be active under mild, humid conditions. On land, they avoid exposed, drying environments and seek protected microhabitats. When threatened, a newt may remain motionless, swim into vegetation, or present its brighter underside. Skin secretions provide an additional defense, although the toxicity of this species should not be inferred to match that of every other newt.
Diet and Hunting
Black-spotted Newts are small carnivores. Likely prey includes aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms, snails, and other invertebrates small enough to swallow. Adults may also consume amphibian eggs or very small larvae when opportunities arise, though the importance of such prey probably varies by site.
Hunting is generally close-range. A newt searches among plants, leaf litter, and bottom sediments, then captures prey with a quick forward movement of the head. Aquatic feeding may involve suction created as the mouth opens. Larvae eat minute aquatic animals and progressively larger prey as they grow.

Vocalizations
Black-spotted Newts do not produce the advertisement calls associated with frogs and toads. They are effectively silent to a human observer in the field. Courtship and recognition rely primarily on posture, movement, touch, and chemical cues rather than long-distance vocal communication.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding occurs in water and is influenced by rainfall, temperature, and pond availability. In southern climates, activity may begin during cool or mild parts of the year when seasonal wetlands fill, but timing varies by year and location. Males court females at close range, using characteristic newt movements and chemical signals before depositing a spermatophore for the female to pick up.
No nest is constructed. Females place eggs individually on aquatic vegetation or other submerged material, often folding or positioning plant tissue around an egg. Scattered placement reduces the chance that one disturbance will destroy an entire clutch, although eggs remain vulnerable to drying, predators, and sudden changes in water quality.
Reproduction
Fertilization is internal after the female takes up the male’s spermatophore. Egg laying can continue over time rather than occurring as a single clutch. The eggs hatch into aquatic larvae with feathery external gills, a tail fin, and slender limbs that develop as growth proceeds.
Larvae remain in water while feeding and developing. Metamorphosis involves loss of the external gills and changes in skin, tail, and body form. Development time is strongly affected by temperature, food, and how long a pond retains water. A rapidly drying wetland can cause reproductive failure, while an unusually long hydroperiod may allow more larvae to complete metamorphosis. Unlike frog young, the larval stage is properly called a salamander larva rather than a tadpole.

Similar Species
The Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) is the closest likely source of confusion. It usually has a greener or browner back with small red spots bordered in black. Its terrestrial red eft stage, where present, is bright orange to red and very different from a typical adult Black-spotted Newt. Geographic range is also useful: the Black-spotted Newt is a far-southern Gulf Coastal Plain species.
The Striped Newt (Notophthalmus perstriatus) of the southeastern United States has lengthwise red or orange stripes rather than a primarily black-spotted dorsal pattern. Its known range does not overlap the core range of the Black-spotted Newt.
Other local salamanders may share wetlands but often have smoother skin, a rounder tail, external gills in permanently aquatic adults, or a different color pattern. Small lizards have scales, claws, and dry skin; these features quickly separate them from any newt.
Conservation
The Black-spotted Newt is commonly assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Its limited distribution, fragmented populations, and dependence on vulnerable wetlands make it sensitive to habitat change. Conservation and legal classifications can differ among jurisdictions and may be updated as new survey information becomes available.
Major concerns include wetland drainage, conversion of thornscrub and coastal-plain habitat, groundwater alteration, drought, pollution, road mortality, and introduced predatory fish. Climate-driven changes in rainfall could shorten wetland hydroperiods or make successful breeding less dependable. Protecting both breeding ponds and surrounding terrestrial cover is essential; preserving a pond alone may not maintain a population through dry periods.
Field Identification Tips
- Confirm the location. A black-spotted newt well outside southern Texas or Gulf-facing Mexico warrants especially cautious documentation.
- Check the belly. Look for a yellow to orange underside with dark markings, but do not turn over or restrain the animal solely for identification.
- Study the spots. The dorsal marks should be black and irregular, not red spots enclosed by black rings.
- Look at the tail. A compressed swimming tail supports identification as a newt rather than a small terrestrial salamander.
- Photograph the habitat. Images of the pond, vegetation, and surrounding landscape can make a record more useful.
- Avoid handling. Photograph from above and the side, keep sunscreen or insect repellent away from the animal, and never collect it without authorization.
