Join to Add This SightingThe Southern Toad (Anaxyrus terrestris) is a familiar amphibian of the southeastern United States. It occurs in pine woods, sandy scrub, hammocks, suburban yards, agricultural edges, and other places with loose soil and nearby breeding water. Although often encountered after warm rain, it spends much of its time concealed beneath soil, leaf litter, logs, or debris.
This is a thick-bodied, terrestrial toad with dry-looking, warty skin and conspicuous poison glands behind the eyes. Its most useful field mark is the pair of raised knobs associated with the bony crests on top of the head. Color varies considerably, so identification should rely on head structure, proportions, pattern, range, and call rather than color alone. Older field guides may list the species as Bufo terrestris; current classifications generally place it in Anaxyrus.

Appearance and Field Marks
The Southern Toad has a broad head, rounded snout, horizontal pupils, and a compact body. Its skin is covered with low warts of different sizes. These warts are normal skin structures and do not cause human warts. Dark dorsal blotches may surround one or more warts, but the number is variable and is less useful than the shape of the head crests.
A raised bony ridge runs along each side of the crown between and behind the eyes. On a typical Southern Toad, the rear portion of each ridge forms a noticeable knob or boss. These paired knobs may be obvious in an adult viewed from above or at a slight angle. They can be less distinct in juveniles, worn individuals, or photographs with flat lighting.
Large parotoid glands lie behind the head. These glands release a defensive secretion when the toad is severely stressed or bitten. A pale stripe may run down the middle of the back, but it is inconsistent and should not be treated as diagnostic. The legs usually have darker crossbars, while the belly is cream to pale gray and may be plain or lightly mottled.

Size and Measurements
Most adults measure approximately 1.7–3.5 inches (4.3–8.9 cm) from the tip of the snout to the vent. Exceptional individuals may fall outside that typical range. Females generally grow larger and heavier than males, especially when carrying eggs.
Southern Toads have relatively short hind limbs and move with short hops or deliberate steps rather than the long leaps associated with many true frogs. Newly transformed toadlets are much smaller than adults and can be mistaken for insects or bits of moving leaf litter. Size is useful for separating a large adult from an Oak Toad, but it should be combined with head shape and pattern.
Range and Distribution
The species is native to the southeastern United States. Its range extends from southeastern Virginia through the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, then west across parts of southern Alabama and Mississippi into eastern Louisiana. Distribution is strongest on the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains, although the species also enters adjoining uplands in some areas.
Southern Toads may be locally abundant but unevenly distributed. Loose soils, suitable terrestrial cover, and seasonal or permanent breeding sites all influence where they occur. Barrier islands and developed landscapes can support populations where freshwater breeding pools remain accessible. Habitat
Southern Toads occupy a broad range of warm, generally low-elevation habitats. Typical settings include longleaf and slash pine woods, sandhills, oak hammocks, scrub, coastal forests, flatwoods, floodplain edges, fields, gardens, and lightly developed neighborhoods. Sandy or friable soil is especially useful because these toads often burrow backward to escape heat, cold, and dry conditions.
Adults do not need to remain beside water throughout the year. They may forage well away from ponds and wetlands, returning to water primarily to breed. Suitable breeding sites include temporary rain pools, roadside ditches, marshy margins, shallow ponds, flooded fields, and other still or slow-water habitats. Fish-free seasonal pools can provide favorable nursery habitat because they contain fewer aquatic predators.

Behavior
This toad is primarily nocturnal during warm weather. Individuals emerge around dusk or after rain to forage across open soil, lawns, paths, and leaf litter. During daylight, they shelter in burrows, under logs, beneath stones, inside stump cavities, or under human-made objects. A porch light may create a productive feeding site by attracting insects.
When threatened, a Southern Toad may crouch, inflate its body, lower its head, or release defensive secretions from its parotoid glands. These secretions discourage many predators but do not make the toad invulnerable. Some snakes and other wildlife can successfully consume toads.
Handle wild amphibians only when necessary. Clean, damp hands are less likely to damage their permeable skin than dry hands contaminated with lotion, sunscreen, insect repellent, or other chemicals. Wash afterward, avoid touching your eyes or mouth, and prevent pets from mouthing toads.
Diet and Hunting
Adult Southern Toads eat a varied assortment of small terrestrial invertebrates. Common prey includes beetles, ants, termites, crickets, roaches, moth larvae, spiders, millipedes, and other animals small enough to swallow. Diet changes with prey availability, season, and toad size.
The toad commonly uses a sit-and-wait strategy. It remains still until movement attracts its attention, then turns toward the prey and captures it with a rapid flick of the tongue. It may also walk slowly through leaf litter while searching. Juveniles focus on very small prey such as ants, mites, springtails, and tiny flies. Tadpoles feed differently, grazing on algae, microorganisms, and organic material in shallow water.

Vocalizations
The male’s advertisement call is a sustained, high-pitched musical trill, often repeated from shallow water or the water’s edge. A chorus can sound continuous when many males overlap. Calls are most likely on warm, humid nights following rain, although local weather and water levels strongly affect calling activity.
The trill is helpful where several toad species occur together. Fowler’s Toad typically gives a shorter, nasal, bleating call rather than a long musical trill. American Toad calls can also be trilled, so range, pitch, duration, and visual field marks should all be considered. Recordings made from a respectful distance are often more useful than approaching a calling male closely.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding timing varies across the range. Activity may begin in late winter in the southern part of the range and later in spring farther north, with additional calling after heavy warm-season rains. In Florida and other mild areas, breeding can occur across an extended portion of the year when water and temperature are suitable.
Southern Toads do not construct nests or provide parental care. Males gather at shallow wetlands and call to attract females. A male clasps a receptive female around the body just behind the forelimbs, a position known as amplexus. Fertilization takes place externally as the female releases her eggs.
Breeding pools are often temporary, but they must retain water long enough for larvae to complete development. Hydroperiod, temperature, crowding, food, and predator abundance can all influence breeding success.
Reproduction
Eggs are deposited in long, gelatinous strings, often wrapped around submerged vegetation or laid across the bottom of shallow water. A female may produce several thousand eggs, but output varies with her size and condition. The dark embryos are visible within the clear jelly.
Hatching may occur within several days under warm conditions, though development slows in cooler water. The tadpoles are small and dark, often appearing black when viewed from above. They may form conspicuous schools in sunny shallows, a behavior that can aid feeding and may reduce risk to any one individual.
Larval development generally takes a number of weeks but is highly sensitive to temperature and pool duration. During metamorphosis, hind legs and then forelegs emerge, the tail is absorbed, and the mouth and digestive system change for life on land. Newly transformed toadlets often disperse from the water in large numbers after rain. Most eggs and larvae do not survive to adulthood, serving instead as food for aquatic insects, fish, reptiles, birds, and other predators.

Similar Species
Fowler’s Toad: This species can overlap with the Southern Toad in parts of the Southeast. Fowler’s Toad often has several warts within each dark dorsal spot and lacks the Southern Toad’s prominent paired head knobs. Its advertisement call is usually a short, nasal bleat. Wart counts vary, so inspect the cranial crests as well.
American Toad: American Toads generally have one or two enlarged warts in each dark spot. Their cranial crests and parotoid glands have a different relationship and do not usually form the Southern Toad’s distinct rear knobs. Overlap is most relevant near the northern and inland edge of the Southern Toad’s range.
Oak Toad: The Oak Toad is usually much smaller, with a narrow pale stripe down the back, proportionately large parotoid glands, and a more pointed appearance. Size and dorsal pattern are helpful, but young Southern Toads require closer inspection.
Cane Toad: In parts of Florida, introduced Cane Toads may occur around developed areas. Adults are commonly much larger and have massive, triangular parotoid glands. They lack the Southern Toad’s paired cranial knobs. Juveniles can be more challenging, so head shape and gland structure matter more than size alone.
Conservation
The Southern Toad is not generally regarded as imperiled across its broad range, and it can persist in some suburban and agricultural landscapes. Local populations can nevertheless decline when wetlands are filled, seasonal pools are drained, upland shelter is cleared, or roads separate breeding sites from terrestrial habitat.
Pesticides, fertilizers, disease, prolonged drought, invasive predators, and artificial barriers may add further pressure. Because adults spend much of the year on land, protecting only the breeding pond is insufficient. Functional habitat includes the pond, surrounding woods or fields, moist refuges, burrowing soil, and safe travel routes between them.
Property owners can help by retaining leaf litter, reducing chemical use, preserving shallow seasonal water where appropriate, and providing escape ramps in pools or steep-sided containers. Outdoor pets should be supervised, both for the safety of the toad and because its defensive secretion can irritate a pet’s mouth.
Field Identification Tips
- View the toad from above and look for a raised knob behind each eye where the cranial crest ends.
- Do not identify it from brown or gray coloration alone; color changes with substrate, moisture, and individual variation.
- Check geographic range before comparing fine details.
- Listen for a sustained, high musical trill near shallow water on warm, wet nights.
- Use body size cautiously, particularly with juveniles and unusually large females.
- Photograph the top of the head, back, parotoid glands, and side profile for later identification.
- At night, scan roads slowly and safely after rain, but avoid handling animals unless moving one from immediate danger.
- If relocation is necessary, move the toad only a short distance in the direction it was already traveling.
