Butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a long-lived North American milkweed recognized by its vivid orange flower clusters, narrow leaves, and preference for sunny, well-drained ground. Unlike most milkweeds, its injured stems usually release little or no white milky latex. That difference, combined with its bright flowers and comparatively low, clumping growth, makes it one of the easier milkweeds to identify.
This herbaceous perennial is both a conspicuous summer wildflower and an important wildlife plant. Its flowers provide nectar for butterflies, bees, wasps, beetles, and other insects, while its foliage can serve as food for monarch and queen butterfly caterpillars. Observe wild plants without digging or collecting them, especially where populations are small.

Individual flowers are roughly 8–12 mm across, although the entire cluster may span several centimeters.
Orange is the characteristic color, ranging from yellow-orange to deep reddish orange. Naturally occurring yellow or red-orange forms are possible, so consider color with leaf arrangement, flower structure, and habitat rather than using it alone.
The leaves are alternate rather than opposite or whorled. They are generally 5–12 cm (2–5 in) long, narrow to broadly lance-shaped, and pointed or blunt at the tip. Their margins are unlobed and smooth. Both leaves and stems may feel finely rough or hairy. Leaves are usually attached directly to the stem or have very short stalks.

Butterfly weed is native across a broad but uneven portion of North America. Its principal range covers the eastern and central United States, from New England and parts of the Great Lakes region south to Florida and west through the Great Plains and Texas. More scattered populations occur in parts of the Southwest, and the species extends into southern Canada and Mexico.
It is absent or uncommon across much of the Pacific Coast and northern Rocky Mountain region outside cultivation. Similar Species and Look-Alikes
Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is usually taller and has broad, opposite leaves, large pinkish-purple flower clusters, and abundant milky latex. It also tends to form colonies from spreading rhizomes.
Clasping milkweed (Asclepias amplexicaulis) grows in similarly dry habitats but has broad, opposite leaves that clasp the stem. Its flowers are typically pinkish, greenish, or muted purple rather than brilliant orange.
Fewflower milkweed (Asclepias lanceolata) can have orange or reddish flowers, but it is associated mainly with wet southeastern habitats. It is generally taller and more slender, with relatively narrow leaves and smaller flower clusters.
Tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica), a nonnative garden plant in most of the United States, bears red-and-yellow flowers on taller, less hairy stems. Its leaves are opposite and more tapered. In warm climates it may remain green much longer than native butterfly weed.
