Blue lettuce (Lactuca pulchella) is a native perennial wildflower of prairies, plains, open woods, roadsides, and other sunny habitats across much of northern and western North America. Despite its common name, it is not a cultivated lettuce. It belongs to the same genus, however, and broken leaves or stems release the milky latex characteristic of many wild lettuces.
The plant’s lavender-blue flower heads are unusual within a genus dominated by yellow-flowered species. Blue lettuce can be conspicuous while blooming, yet its narrow leaves and slender stems blend easily into surrounding grasses. Common chicory (Cichorium intybus) also has blue flower heads and milky sap. Chicory usually has stiffer, angular, widely branching stems, with relatively few small leaves on the upper branches. Its blue heads often sit directly against the branches. Blue lettuce is typically leafier and has narrower flower-head bracts.
Tall blue lettuce (Lactuca biennis) is a much taller, usually biennial woodland-edge species. Despite its common name, its heads are generally yellowish, cream, or purplish rather than clear blue. It also has broader, more conspicuously lobed leaves and a large branching inflorescence.
Canada lettuce (Lactuca canadensis) has yellow flower heads and commonly deeply lobed leaves. It favors open woods, edges, and disturbed ground, especially in eastern and central regions.
Prairie lettuce (Lactuca ludoviciana) may grow in similar Great Plains habitats but normally bears yellow to cream-colored heads. Checking flower color, leaf lobing, involucre shape, and local range helps separate the two.

Wild lettuces have attracted attention because their latex contains bitter compounds. Comparisons with the concentrated latex historically called lactucarium are sometimes made, but that does not establish a safe or effective medicinal use for blue lettuce. Cultural knowledge belongs in its specific community context rather than being treated as a universal recipe.
Is It Edible or Toxic?
Blue lettuce is not generally regarded as a dangerously poisonous plant, and young leaves have been reported as edible after suitable preparation. Mature foliage becomes increasingly bitter and tough. Use seed or nursery-propagated plants sourced from the appropriate region. Germination requirements can vary, and outdoor fall sowing often provides the temperature changes native perennial seed needs. Never dig plants from wild populations without permission.

Conservation
Blue lettuce is broadly distributed and is generally considered secure at the continental scale. It is not federally listed as threatened or endangered in the United States.
