The probable native distribution centers on eastern and central North America, extending across much of the United States and into southern Canada. Planting, transportation, agriculture, and roadside seeding have expanded its distribution, and it is now encountered across most of the contiguous United States and in parts of Canada outside its core native range.

It is usually a longer-lived, spreading perennial with less bristly foliage and narrower, often more uniformly shaped leaves. Brown-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia triloba) is generally taller and more openly branched, with numerous smaller flower heads. Its lower and middle leaves are often three-lobed, a useful distinction from the mostly unlobed leaves of R. hirta.
