Blue vervain (Verbena hastata) is a tall, moisture-loving perennial wildflower native to much of North America. It is most recognizable in summer, when its branching crown of slender flower spikes rises above wet meadows, marsh edges, stream banks, and other sunny, damp places. Numerous tiny blue-violet flowers open in narrow bands along the spikes, giving the inflorescence a distinctive candelabra-like outline.
Although individual flowers are small, a mature plant can be conspicuous because of its height, strong vertical form, and repeated tiers of spikes.
