The Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) is one of North America’s most familiar wetland songbirds. A displaying male, glossy black with bright red-and-yellow shoulder patches, is unmistakable when he sings from a cattail or fence post. Females look strikingly different: brown, heavily streaked, and more easily confused with sparrows or other female blackbirds.
Red-winged Blackbirds occur across most of the continent, from Alaska and Canada south through the United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America and the Caribbean. Although closely associated with marshes during the breeding season, they also use wet meadows, pastures, agricultural fields, and grassy roadsides. In fall and winter, they often gather in large mixed flocks with grackles, cowbirds, and starlings.

Appearance

A relaxed male can conceal much of the epaulet beneath black feathers, while a territorial male raises his shoulders and spreads the patches prominently.
Female Red-winged Blackbirds are smaller and predominantly brown. Their underparts are boldly streaked with dark brown, and their faces often show a pale eyebrow, darker eye line, and pale throat. Some females have rusty or salmon-colored tinges on the face and shoulders. Their long, pointed bill and relatively robust body help distinguish them from most sparrows.
Immature males may be blackish brown with pale feather edges, streaking, and incompletely developed shoulder patches. They can look mottled rather than uniformly black. Juveniles of both sexes are streaked, and plumage changes through molt can create considerable variation in late summer and fall.

Size and Wingspan
Adults are approximately 17–23 cm (6.7–9.1 in) long, with a wingspan of about 31–40 cm (12.2–15.8 in). Males are substantially larger and heavier-bodied than females, so an isolated female may appear surprisingly small.
In general proportions, a Red-winged Blackbird is larger and more robust than a Song Sparrow but smaller and shorter-tailed than a Common Grackle. Its conical, pointed bill is heavier than a warbler’s bill but less massive than a large grackle’s bill.
Range and Distribution
Red-winged Blackbirds are widespread across North America. Their breeding range extends through much of Alaska and Canada and across nearly all of the contiguous United States. Populations also occur south through Mexico and into parts of Central America and the Caribbean.
Migration varies geographically. Birds breeding in northern and interior regions commonly move south in fall, while many populations in the southern United States, the Pacific Coast, and Mexico remain year-round. Habitat
Freshwater and brackish marshes are classic breeding habitats. Birds commonly occupy stands of cattails, bulrushes, reeds, sedges, willow scrub, and other dense vegetation near shallow water. They also nest in wet hayfields, damp meadows, roadside ditches, weedy fields, and upland areas where tall grasses or shrubs provide suitable cover.
Outside the breeding season, habitat use broadens. Flocks feed in harvested grain fields, feedlots, pastures, lawns, and open ground. They usually roost communally in marsh vegetation, dense shrubs, or groves of trees. A site with open feeding areas near secure roosting cover can attract thousands of blackbirds.

Behavior
Male Red-winged Blackbirds are highly visible during the breeding season. A territorial male selects an elevated perch, leans forward, spreads his tail, partly opens his wings, and flares his red epaulets while singing. He may move among several prominent perches around a territory.
Males defend territories aggressively against other males and sometimes confront much larger animals. Birds nesting near paths may fly close to people, especially when young are nearby, but physical contact is uncommon. Females spend more time low in vegetation, where they build nests and care for young.
The species is often polygynous: one male’s territory may contain the nests of several females. This does not mean every territorial male mates with all females present, and mating patterns can be more complex than territorial appearances suggest.
Diet and Hunting
Red-winged Blackbirds are omnivorous. During spring and summer, they eat many insects and other invertebrates, including beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, flies, spiders, and small aquatic prey. Protein-rich animal food is particularly important for growing nestlings.
Seeds and grain become more prominent in fall and winter. Birds consume weed seeds, grasses, corn, rice, sunflower seeds, and other cultivated grains. They forage by walking on the ground, probing among plant bases, gleaning food from stems and leaves, and occasionally catching insects in short aerial pursuits. In marshes, they can balance on flexible reeds while inspecting seed heads and vegetation.

Vocalizations
The male’s song is commonly rendered as konk-la-ree, beginning with a short note and ending in a rich, descending trill. The exact quality varies among individuals and regions, but the emphatic, liquid finish is characteristic. Males frequently accompany the song with a shoulder-spreading display.
Females also vocalize and may produce rapid, chattering songs or calls. Both sexes use sharp check or chit notes, especially when alarmed. Winter flocks generate a continuous mixture of whistles, chuckles, and harsh calls. Learning the male’s song is one of the fastest ways to locate the species in dense marsh vegetation.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding generally begins in spring, with timing varying by latitude and local conditions. The female chooses the nest site and constructs a deep, woven cup. She wraps grasses, sedges, or strips of plant material around several upright stems, then lines the interior with finer vegetation. Nests are often low above shallow water or wet ground, though upland nests may be placed in grasses, crops, or shrubs.
A typical clutch contains two to four eggs. The eggs are usually pale blue-green and marked with dark brown, purplish, or black lines and blotches, often concentrated toward the broad end. The female performs most or all incubation, which commonly lasts about 11–13 days. Both parents may help feed nestlings, although the female usually provides most direct care.

Young and Development
Newly hatched young are helpless, sparsely covered with down, and dependent on adults for warmth and food. Parents deliver insects and other small invertebrates throughout the nestling period. Young typically leave the nest roughly 11–14 days after hatching, sometimes before they can fly strongly.
Recently fledged birds remain concealed in nearby vegetation and continue to receive food from adults. Observers should not assume that a fully feathered fledgling on the ground has been abandoned. Unless it is injured or in immediate danger, leaving it near its parents is usually the least disruptive response.
Where to See
In spring and early summer, visit accessible freshwater marshes, wetland boardwalks, wildlife refuges, pond edges, and roadside cattail stands. Listen for singing males and scan the highest reed heads, shrubs, utility wires, and fence posts. Females are more likely to stay low in cover so that patient observation may be necessary.
During fall and winter, check agricultural fields, livestock areas, grassy airport margins viewed from legal public locations, and communal roosts. Large flocks can be impressive, but identifying individual birds within them requires attention to size, bill shape, tail length, and flashes of shoulder color. Avoid entering nesting vegetation or approaching active roosts closely.
Similar Species
Tricolored Blackbird: This western species is extremely similar to a male Red-winged Blackbird. Adult male Tricolored Blackbirds typically show a bright white border beneath the red shoulder patch rather than a yellow or buff border. Females are generally darker and colder-toned, but identification can be difficult. Consider range, voice, flocking behavior, and multiple plumage features together.
Yellow-headed Blackbird: Adult males have an unmistakable yellow head and chest. Females are brownish with yellow concentrated around the face and breast and usually appear less heavily streaked than female Red-winged Blackbirds.
Common Grackle: Grackles are larger, longer-tailed, and longer-billed. Adult males have a pale eye and iridescent head but lack red shoulder patches.
Brown-headed Cowbird: Male cowbirds have a brown head and black body without epaulets. Females are relatively plain gray-brown, lacking the strong streaking of most female Red-winged Blackbirds.
Song Sparrow: A female Red-winged Blackbird may initially suggest a large sparrow. It is usually bigger, longer-billed, and more uniformly streaked below, without the Song Sparrow’s strongly patterned face and commonly visible central breast spot.
Conservation
The Red-winged Blackbird is commonly classified as Least Concern because it remains widespread and abundant. Nevertheless, long-term monitoring indicates substantial declines in some regions and across the continent. Abundance should not be mistaken for immunity from habitat loss or other pressures.
Wetland drainage, changes in farming, pesticide exposure, disturbance at breeding colonies, and marsh vegetation management can affect local populations. Conserving wetlands with varied water depths and a mixture of open water, emergent plants, and nearby grassland supports Red-winged Blackbirds as well as many less common species. Because flocks sometimes feed on crops, management can involve balancing agricultural concerns with wildlife conservation.
Field Identification Tips
- Start with habitat and posture. A blackbird singing from an exposed cattail in spring is a strong candidate, but confirm plumage and voice.
- Watch the shoulders. A male may hide his red patches, leaving only a narrow yellowish line visible.
- Do not expect the female to look black. Her brown, streaked plumage is normal and provides camouflage around the nest.
- Check bill and body structure. Females have a pointed blackbird bill and a heavier, more elongated shape than most sparrows.
- Use several traits for difficult birds. Light, molt, feather wear, and viewing angle can alter the apparent color of an epaulet.
- Listen before scanning. The male’s distinctive song often reveals a bird hidden among reeds.
