The Western Toad (Anaxyrus boreas) is a broad-bodied, terrestrial amphibian of western North America. It occurs from coastal forests and mountain meadows to sagebrush country, provided suitable breeding water and protected terrestrial refuges are available. Adults often spend much of the year away from ponds, which can make the species seem scarce until large numbers gather at traditional breeding sites.

Its pale back stripe, dry-looking warty skin, horizontal pupils, and large parotoid glands are useful field marks. Color varies considerably, however, and young toads may not yet show a strong dorsal stripe. Taxonomy within the Western Toad complex has also changed over time, particularly in California and the southern part of the range, so regional field guides may use different names for some populations.

Quick Identification

  • Shape: Stocky body with short legs and a blunt, rounded snout.
  • Back: Gray, brown, olive, greenish, or reddish, usually with dark blotches and many rounded warts.
  • Dorsal stripe: A narrow cream, yellow, or white line commonly runs down the center of the back.
  • Eyes: Horizontal pupils set in a coppery or golden iris.
  • Parotoid glands: Large, elongated poison glands behind the eyes.
  • Head: Prominent bony cranial crests are absent or poorly developed.

Appearance and Field Marks

Western Toads have thick bodies, relatively short limbs, and granular to warty skin. Their base color can match local soil and vegetation, ranging from pale tan to chocolate brown, charcoal gray, olive, or muted reddish brown. Dark blotches often surround individual warts. The underside is pale cream or grayish and may be lightly mottled, especially toward the legs.

The pale vertebral stripe is one of the most recognizable marks on a mature animal. It begins near the snout or between the eyes and continues along the back. Its width and brightness vary, and it may be faint or absent in juveniles. Recently transformed toadlets are often nearly black and can occur in dense groups along shorelines.

Behind each eye is an elongated parotoid gland. These glands release defensive secretions when the toad is threatened. The secretions can irritate eyes and mouths, so observers should avoid unnecessary handling and prevent pets from mouthing a toad. Contrary to folklore, touching a toad does not cause human warts.

Size and Measurements

Western Toad adults generally measure about 2.2–5.1 inches (5.6–13 cm) from snout to vent. Females tend to be larger and more robust than males, although size alone is not reliable for sexing an isolated animal. Southern or high-elevation populations may differ in typical body size because growth depends on climate, season length, food, and age.

Breeding males often have dark nuptial pads on the inner fingers, which help them grip a female during amplexus. They may also have smoother-looking skin and narrower bodies than gravid females. Newly transformed toadlets are commonly less than an inch long and are much more delicate than adults.

Range and Distribution

The Western Toad is native to western North America. In the broad traditional sense, its distribution extends from southeastern Alaska and western Canada south through the western United States into parts of Baja California. It reaches inland across portions of the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin regions. Distribution is not continuous: unsuitable lowlands, dry basins, development, and mountain barriers separate many populations.

It occurs from near sea level to high mountain environments above 10,000 feet (3,000 m) in some southern areas. Local presence depends less on elevation alone than on the combination of breeding water, seasonal moisture, suitable soils, and secure overwintering sites. Because classification of southern populations remains under study, local agencies may recognize species or subspecies boundaries differently.

Habitat

Western Toads use a wide range of habitats, including coniferous forest, mixed woodland, wet meadow, montane parkland, shrub-steppe, riparian corridors, and coastal areas. Adults are primarily terrestrial. They shelter beneath logs and rocks, inside rodent burrows, in root channels, or within loose soil that protects them from heat and water loss.

Breeding usually takes place in shallow, sun-warmed water. Suitable sites include pond margins, lake shallows, marshes, slow stream backwaters, flooded meadows, reservoirs, and temporary pools. Open shorelines with sparse vegetation can be especially important because sunlight warms the water and promotes the growth of algae eaten by tadpoles. A pond occupied in spring may appear empty later, after adults and toadlets disperse.

Behavior

Western toads are often active from dusk through the night, particularly during warm, damp weather. They may also forage by day in cool forests or at high elevations. Instead of relying entirely on long jumps, Western Toads commonly walk with deliberate steps, interrupted by short hops when disturbed.

Individuals may travel substantial distances between breeding ponds, summer feeding areas, and winter refuges. They often show fidelity to breeding or overwintering locations, making safe movement corridors important. During cold months, toads retreat below the frost line in burrows, cavities, or other insulated sites. Activity periods are shorter at high elevations and northern latitudes.

When threatened, a toad may crouch, inflate its body, lower its head, or release defensive skin secretions. Its mottled coloration also provides effective camouflage against soil, bark, and leaf litter.

Diet and Hunting

Adult Western Toads eat a varied assortment of small invertebrates. Common prey includes beetles, ants, flies, moth larvae, spiders, earthworms, slugs, and other animals it can swallow whole. Diet changes with local availability and the size of the toad.

A foraging toad often sits quietly near an insect travel route and lunges when prey comes within reach. At other times it walks slowly through vegetation or litter, visually tracking movement. Artificial lights can concentrate insects and attract toads, but roads, pets, pesticides, and dry landscaped surfaces can make developed areas hazardous.

Tadpoles feed mainly by scraping algae, microorganisms, and organic material from submerged surfaces. Their dense schools may move together through shallow water where food is abundant, and temperatures are favorable.

Vocalizations

The Western Toad is quieter than many pond-breeding frogs and toads. Males generally lack the large vocal sac used by strongly calling species, and breeding gatherings may be surprisingly subdued. A male can produce a weak chirp, peep, or soft clucking sound, especially during close interactions.

A rapid release call is given when another male grasps a male or otherwise disturbs him. Because calls are faint and do not carry far, silence at a suitable pond does not rule out the species. Visual searches for adults, egg strings, tadpole schools, or recently transformed young are often more productive.

Breeding and Nesting

Breeding begins after snowmelt or seasonal warming. It may occur in late winter or early spring at low elevations but not until early or midsummer in cold mountain basins. Adults can gather in large numbers at shallow water, although some populations breed in small, inconspicuous groups.

Like other true toads, the species does not construct a nest. The male clasps the female behind the forelimbs in amplexus while she lays eggs. The pair moves through shallow water as long, gelatinous strings wrap around vegetation or settle over the bottom. Calm water with broad, gently sloping margins often provides favorable conditions.

Reproduction

A female Western Toad may lay several thousand eggs in a breeding event, with large females sometimes producing well over 10,000. Exact numbers vary with body size and population. The dark embryos are enclosed in clear jelly and arranged in long strings, a form that helps distinguish toad eggs from the compact clusters laid by many frogs.

Hatching may occur within days to a few weeks, depending largely on water temperature. Tadpoles are small and very dark, with rounded bodies and low tail fins. They frequently form tightly packed schools in warm shallows. Metamorphosis can take roughly one to several months; development is faster in warm water but is also affected by food, crowding, hydroperiod, and elevation.

Newly transformed toadlets often emerge almost simultaneously and form dark bands along the shore. They disperse into nearby terrestrial habitat as they grow. Juvenile mortality is naturally high, and only a small proportion reach breeding age.

Similar Species

Woodhouse’s Toad: Often has well-developed cranial crests between and behind the eyes. Its parotoid glands and head structure differ, while the dorsal stripe may resemble that of a Western Toad. Range overlap is most likely in interior areas.

American Toad and Canadian Toad: These species occur mainly farther east but may be confused with Western Toads near regional contact zones. Consider wart patterns, cranial crests, parotoid shape, and verified location together.

Red-spotted Toad: Usually smaller and flatter, with conspicuous reddish or orange-tipped warts and rounder parotoid glands. It is associated with rocky desert waterways.

Spadefoots: Spadefoots often have smoother skin, vertical pupils, and a hard digging spade on each hind foot. Their body shape and rapid hopping also differ.

Other members of the Western Toad complex: Southern forms, including toads traditionally called California Toads, can look extremely similar. Photographs alone may not resolve identity near proposed taxonomic boundaries; location and current regional treatment are essential.

Conservation

Western Toad status varies sharply across the range. Western Toads remain locally common in some landscapes, while other populations have declined or disappeared. Mountain populations commonly known as Boreal Toads have experienced particularly serious losses in portions of the Rocky Mountains.

Threats include wetland drainage, altered water levels, road mortality, development, disease, drought, severe wildfire effects, and loss of upland refuges. Chytridiomycosis, caused by the amphibian chytrid fungus, has contributed to declines in some regions. Introduced fish and bullfrogs may also affect particular breeding sites, although impacts vary with habitat and community structure.

Protecting a breeding pond alone may be insufficient. Conservation also requires connected terrestrial habitat, migration routes, overwintering refuges, and natural shoreline conditions. Visitors can help by cleaning mud from footwear and field equipment between wetlands, keeping pets controlled, and avoiding disturbance to egg strings or tadpole schools.

Field Identification Tips

  • Look for the combination of a pale mid-back stripe, elongated parotoid glands, horizontal pupils, and little or no cranial crest.
  • Search open, shallow pond margins for black tadpole schools rather than relying on loud calls.
  • Use a flashlight angled across the ground at night; the eyes may reflect light before the camouflaged body becomes visible.
  • Check nearby forests, meadows, and road edges during damp weather, not just the water itself.
  • Photograph the back, side of the head, parotoid glands, and habitat for later identification.
  • Record the location and date because range and breeding season are important identification clues.
  • Observe without handling whenever possible. If an animal must be moved from immediate danger, use clean, wet, chemical-free hands and move it only a short distance in its direction of travel.
