The Sonoran Desert Toad (Incilius alvarius), formerly called the Colorado River Toad, is a massive, heavy-bodied amphibian native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It is among the largest native toads in North America. Although associated with arid country, it depends on seasonal water and becomes most conspicuous during warm rains.

This species is recognizable by its olive to gray-green color, relatively smooth skin, conspicuous glands behind the eyes, and pale glandular swellings near the corners of the mouth. It is primarily nocturnal and spends much of the dry season sheltered underground. Its skin secretions are highly toxic, making observation without handling especially important. Quick Identification

Appearance and Field Marks

An adult Sonoran Desert Toad has a broad, flattened head, thick torso, and muscular hind legs. Its subdued coloration blends well with wet soil, roadside gravel, and desert vegetation. Some individuals are uniformly olive green, while others appear gray, brownish, or slightly yellow-green. The underside is pale cream or whitish and may be unmarked or lightly mottled.

The skin is less conspicuously warty than that of many other North American toads. Large, elongated parotoid glands occupy the area behind the eyes. Additional poison glands occur along the limbs, and a pale oval gland near each corner of the mouth is a particularly useful field mark. These jaw glands may look like rounded white or cream-colored patches when illuminated from the side.

The eyes are prominent, with metallic gold or copper irises and horizontal pupils. Distinct dark cranial crests are generally absent or inconspicuous. Juveniles can be more difficult to identify because their proportions and glandular markings are less developed.

Size and Measurements

Most mature Sonoran Desert Toads measure approximately 4 to 7 inches (10 to 18 cm) in snout-to-vent length, excluding the legs. Exceptionally large animals may approach the upper end of that range, and females commonly grow larger and heavier than males.

Size alone should not be used for identification. A small adult male or immature individual can overlap in size with Woodhouse’s or Great Plains toads. Confirm the relatively smooth olive skin, broad head, large parotoid glands, and pale glands at the jaw angles.

Range and Distribution

The species occurs principally in southern and central Arizona and extends east into southwestern New Mexico. Its United States distribution also has included the lower Colorado River region of southeastern California, although records there are scarce and its present status is uncertain in some areas. In Mexico, the range continues through Sonora and into portions of northwestern mainland Mexico, including areas south of the Sonoran Desert proper.

Distribution is patchy because suitable shelter and seasonal breeding water are not evenly available. Local abundance may change dramatically between dry years and wet monsoon seasons. Despite its former common name, “Colorado River Toad,” it is not broadly distributed throughout the Colorado River basin.

Habitat

Sonoran Desert Toads occupy Sonoran Desert scrub, thornscrub, semidesert grassland, riparian corridors, agricultural margins, and lower-elevation woodland. In Mexico, they may also enter subtropical thorn forest and tropical deciduous forest. They are often associated with washes, floodplains, cattle tanks, irrigation features, ponds, and temporary rain-filled basins.

During dry weather, the toads shelter in mammal burrows, spaces beneath rocks, loose soil, or other protected retreats. Developed landscapes can provide artificial refuges and water, so individuals sometimes appear in yards, patios, pet water dishes, swimming-pool areas, or irrigated fields. Roads crossing washes and low desert flats can attract foraging toads on rainy nights while also exposing them to vehicles.

Behavior

This species is mainly nocturnal and seasonally active. Adults may remain underground or otherwise concealed for long periods, emerging when warm temperatures and rainfall create favorable conditions. Summer monsoon storms often trigger conspicuous surface activity, including feeding, movement toward breeding sites, and road crossings.

When threatened, a Sonoran Desert Toad may inflate its body, lower its head, and remain still. Pressure or rough handling can cause the parotoid and other skin glands to release a milky defensive secretion. These secretions contain potent compounds that can cause serious illness in dogs and other predators. People should observe the animal from a respectful distance, keep pets restrained, and never touch their face after accidental contact.

Diet and Hunting

Sonoran Desert Toads are opportunistic sit-and-wait predators. They typically remain motionless until prey moves within range, then lunge and capture it with a rapid extension of the tongue or a snap of the jaws.

The diet includes beetles, crickets, grasshoppers, moths, spiders, ants, and other terrestrial invertebrates. Large adults may also consume centipedes, scorpions, small reptiles, rodents, or other amphibians when suitable opportunities arise. Porch lights and other artificial lights can concentrate insects and consequently attract hunting toads.

Tadpoles feed differently from adults. They graze on algae, microorganisms, suspended organic material, and soft plant matter in shallow breeding water.

Vocalizations

The male’s advertisement call is surprisingly modest for such a large animal. It is commonly described as a short, low-pitched hoot or nasal note rather than the sustained trill produced by many familiar toads. Calls may be repeated at irregular intervals from the edge of shallow water or while the male is partly submerged.

Calling intensity varies with rainfall, temperature, and local breeding conditions. A quiet call can be difficult to isolate within a noisy monsoon chorus containing spadefoots, tree frogs, and other toads. A call alone is therefore less reliable than a clear view of the adult.

Breeding and Nesting

Sonoran Desert Toads do not construct nests or provide parental care. Breeding usually follows warm-season rainfall, particularly during the summer monsoon, though timing varies geographically and from year to year. Adults move toward temporary pools, flooded fields, quiet stream margins, cattle tanks, and other shallow water.

Males call to attract females and clasp them in axillary amplexus, holding behind the female’s forelimbs. Spawning often takes place in shallow water. The eggs are deposited in long gelatinous strings, usually around aquatic vegetation or across the bottom of a pool. Temporary sites may reduce exposure to fish, but rapid drying can destroy an entire reproductive effort.

Reproduction

A female may lay several thousand eggs in a breeding event, although reported totals vary with her size and condition. Fertilization occurs externally as the egg strings are released. Development can proceed quickly in warm water: eggs may hatch within several days, depending on temperature and other site conditions.

The dark tadpoles grow rapidly in productive temporary pools. Metamorphosis may occur within several weeks, but timing is strongly influenced by water temperature, food, crowding, and pool duration. Newly transformed toadlets are small and vulnerable to dehydration, predators, trampling, and traffic as they disperse from the water.

Reproductive success is highly variable. A wet summer can produce many young, while drought, premature pool drying, or flooding may result in little or no recruitment at a given site.

Similar Species

Woodhouse’s Toad: Usually smaller and more visibly warty, with noticeable cranial crests and a pale stripe down the back. Its parotoid glands are smaller, and it lacks the Sonoran Desert Toad’s prominent pale jaw glands.

Great Plains Toad: Typically has bold dark blotches bordered with pale color, abundant warts, and distinct cranial crests. It is less uniformly olive and not as massive in build.

Red-spotted Toad: Much smaller and flatter, with numerous reddish or orange-tipped skin spots. Its parotoid glands are round and inconspicuous compared with those of the Sonoran Desert Toad.

Texas Toad: Smaller, more heavily patterned, and usually marked by a pale middorsal stripe and paired dark blotches. Geographic overlap is limited.

Couch’s Spadefoot: Smoother-skinned and often yellowish green, but smaller and more lightly built. It has vertical pupils and a dark, sickle-shaped digging spade on each hind foot rather than large parotoid glands.

Conservation

The Sonoran Desert Toad remains locally common across parts of its range, but its status differs among states and regions. Threats include loss or fragmentation of desert and riparian habitat, road mortality, prolonged drought, altered water management, contamination of breeding pools, invasive predators, and deliberate collection.

Artificial water sources can provide breeding habitat, but they may also expose eggs and tadpoles to fish, bullfrogs, chemicals, steep-sided tanks, or sudden drainage. Conservation is best supported by protecting natural washes, seasonal wetlands, upland shelter sites, and safe movement routes between them.

Collection rules vary by jurisdiction. Never disturb the species for its skin secretions; doing so can injure the animal and may violate wildlife laws. Responsible observation and photography require no handling.

Field Identification Tips

  • Search visually on warm, wet nights rather than turning rocks or excavating burrows.
  • From a distance, check for an unusually large body, broad head, smooth olive skin, and prominent glands behind the eyes.
  • Look for pale oval glandular patches at the rear corners of the mouth.
  • Use horizontal pupils to separate it from vertical-pupiled spadefoots.
  • Photograph the animal from the side and above without blocking its route of travel.
  • Do not pick up a toad found on a road unless local wildlife guidance specifically recommends a safe procedure.
  • Keep dogs leashed during monsoon weather, especially near puddles, washes, and outdoor water bowls.
  • If a pet mouths a toad, rinse the mouth carefully with water directed outward and seek veterinary assistance promptly.

Interesting Facts

  • The species can spend much of the year hidden underground, then appear suddenly after heavy summer rain.
  • Its comparatively smooth skin sometimes causes observers to mistake it for a frog rather than a true toad.
  • The former name “Colorado River Toad” remains widely used, but “Sonoran Desert Toad” better reflects the center of its distribution.
  • Adults can eat prey that would be too large or well defended for many smaller amphibians.
  • Its powerful defensive chemistry discourages many predators, but it does not prevent mortality from vehicles, habitat change, or improper human handling.
