Join to Add This SightingThe Jefferson salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum) is a long-limbed, mostly dark mole salamander of eastern North America. Adults spend much of the year underground or beneath forest cover, emerging most predictably during late-winter and early-spring migrations to fish-free breeding ponds. Its understated gray-brown coloration can make identification challenging, especially where it occurs alongside blue-spotted salamanders and closely related unisexual Ambystoma.
Finding one usually depends more on season and habitat than on prolonged searching. Damp nights near thawing vernal pools offer the best viewing opportunities. Handle salamanders only when necessary, with clean, wet hands, and avoid disturbing egg masses, submerged branches, or cover objects.

Appearance and Field Marks
Jefferson salamanders have smooth, moist skin and the robust head typical of mole salamanders, but the body is more elongated than that of many close relatives. The legs and toes are especially useful field marks. When the limbs are held naturally, they often look proportionately long, giving the animal a rangy appearance.
Dorsal color varies from charcoal gray and brownish gray to almost black. The underside is generally paler gray. Small bluish or silvery marks may be present along the flanks, legs, jaw, and tail, but these are usually sparse and less conspicuous than the bright blue flecking associated with a typical blue-spotted salamander. Some Jefferson salamanders appear almost unmarked.
The tail is roughly as long as, or somewhat shorter than, the head and body combined. It is compressed from side to side, particularly in breeding adults. Newly metamorphosed juveniles may retain brighter markings than older animals, complicating comparisons based on color alone.
Size and Measurements
Most adults measure approximately 11–18 cm (4.3–7.1 in) from snout to tail tip, although local populations and individual condition create variation. Females often average larger and heavier than males. Total length can be misleading if the tail is damaged or regenerating, so consider body proportions alongside size.
Compared with a blue-spotted salamander, a Jefferson salamander generally appears longer-legged, longer-toed, and more elongated. Compared with a spotted salamander, it is usually slimmer and lacks two regular rows of yellow or orange spots.
Range and Distribution
The species occurs in northeastern and east-central North America. Its distribution includes parts of southern Ontario and portions of the northeastern United States, extending through sections of the Great Lakes region, New England, the central Appalachians, and adjacent interior states. The range is not continuous; suitable populations are often concentrated in landscapes that retain both breeding wetlands and surrounding forest.
Distribution maps can oversimplify the situation because Jefferson salamanders overlap and interbreed within a complex involving blue-spotted salamanders and unisexual lineages. Some salamanders that resemble this species may carry two or more ancestral genomes and cannot be identified confidently by appearance. Habitat
Jefferson salamanders are strongly associated with deciduous or mixed forest containing moist soil, leaf litter, rotting logs, stumps, mammal burrows, and other underground retreats. They spend most of their lives in terrestrial habitat, sometimes hundreds of meters from a breeding wetland. Consequently, protecting only the pond does not preserve the complete habitat required by a population.
Breeding sites are usually seasonal woodland pools, shallow swamps, or pond margins that fill during autumn, winter, or spring. Productive sites typically lack predatory fish and retain water long enough for larvae to metamorphose. A pond that dries in summer may still be excellent habitat because periodic drying prevents fish from becoming established.

Behavior
This salamander is secretive, nocturnal, and largely fossorial. Adults shelter in burrows and soil cavities rather than remaining continuously beneath surface logs. Surface activity increases during mild, wet conditions. Outside the breeding migration, sightings are uncommon even where healthy populations occur.
Migration may begin soon after frost leaves the ground, sometimes while snow or ice remains around a pond. Adults generally move on rainy or foggy nights when temperatures are above freezing. They often follow similar routes between upland forest retreats and breeding pools, making road crossings especially hazardous.
When threatened, an individual may remain still, raise or wave its tail, or release a sticky skin secretion. Like other amphibians, it absorbs water and exchanges gases through its skin, making it vulnerable to drying, pollutants, and rough handling.
Diet and Hunting
Adult Jefferson salamanders eat small terrestrial invertebrates, including earthworms, insects, insect larvae, spiders, slugs, snails, and other appropriately sized prey. They hunt mainly at night, using chemical and visual cues before capturing prey with a quick forward movement of the head and tongue.
Aquatic larvae feed on zooplankton, small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, worms, and other tiny pond animals. Larger larvae may consume amphibian eggs or smaller salamander larvae, and cannibalism can occur when food is limited or size differences are pronounced. Diet varies with prey availability rather than following a narrow specialization.

Vocalizations
Jefferson salamanders do not produce advertisement calls like frogs and toads. Breeding adults locate one another through seasonal movement, close-range sensory cues, and courtship behavior rather than loud vocal communication. Do not treat any faint sound associated with handling as a dependable identification feature.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding begins in late winter or early spring, with timing controlled by latitude, elevation, ice cover, rainfall, and temperature. Males commonly reach ponds before females. Courtship occurs underwater and may include nudging, rubbing, tail movements, and close circling. A male deposits a small spermatophore on the pond bottom, which a receptive female takes into her cloaca for internal fertilization.
Jefferson salamanders do not construct nests or guard their eggs. Females place eggs in multiple gelatinous clusters attached to submerged twigs, plant stems, or other firm supports. Clusters are often looser and less uniformly rounded than the dense masses of spotted salamanders, although egg-mass shape varies with age and water conditions.
Reproduction
A female may deposit well over 100 eggs in total, divided among several clusters, but clutch size varies. The clear or slightly cloudy jelly surrounding each group swells after deposition. Embryos develop more slowly in cold water and may hatch within several weeks when conditions are favorable.
Larvae have broad heads, feathery external gills, and a fin extending along the tail. They remain aquatic through spring and early or midsummer, feeding and growing until metamorphosis. The exact schedule depends heavily on temperature, food, crowding, and how quickly the pond recedes. After the gills are absorbed and the limbs strengthen, juveniles leave the water and enter the surrounding forest.
Individuals usually require several years to reach breeding age. Adult survival and continued access to traditional migration routes are therefore important to population stability.

Similar Species
Blue-spotted salamander: Usually smaller and more compact, with shorter toes and more numerous bright blue or bluish-white flecks. Considerable variation and hybrid ancestry make visual separation unreliable in overlap areas.
Unisexual Ambystoma: These salamanders may contain genetic contributions from Jefferson, blue-spotted, small-mouthed, or other mole salamanders. Many look intermediate or nearly identical to a Jefferson salamander. Photographs and field marks alone may not establish ancestry; genetic testing is sometimes necessary.
Spotted salamander: Stockier, with a broad body and conspicuous yellow or orange spots arranged in two uneven rows. Adults lack the Jefferson salamander’s restrained gray appearance and notably long toes.
Small-mouthed salamander: Generally has a smaller, narrower head, a relatively short snout, and a more compact build. Its range overlaps only in portions of the Jefferson salamander’s broader region.
Tiger salamander: Larger and heavier-bodied, usually with bold yellowish blotches, bars, or spots. Pattern can vary, but its build is typically much more massive.
Conservation
Conservation status differs across the range. Some populations remain locally secure, while others are isolated or declining. Major threats include forest clearing, wetland filling, altered drainage, road mortality, pollution, invasive fish, and development between breeding ponds and upland retreats.
Roads can kill substantial numbers during a few rainy migration nights. Curbs and storm drains may also trap salamanders. Effective protection includes preserving fish-free seasonal wetlands, maintaining broad areas of surrounding forest, retaining coarse woody debris, and keeping migration corridors connected. Amphibian tunnels, temporary road closures, and carefully managed volunteer crossings may reduce mortality where routes are known.
Field observers should avoid introducing disease between wetlands. Clean mud and plant material from boots and equipment, follow local decontamination guidance, and never move adults, larvae, eggs, or pond water between sites.
Field Identification Tips
- Start with habitat and season: A long, dark salamander crossing a wooded road toward a vernal pool on a rainy spring night is a strong candidate.
- Check proportions: Look for an elongated body, long limbs, and especially long toes rather than relying only on color.
- Examine the flecking: Sparse pale-blue marks favor Jefferson salamander, while dense, vivid blue spotting suggests blue-spotted salamander.
- Rule out spotted salamander: Yellow or orange dorsal spots indicate a different species.
- Expect ambiguity: In regions with unisexual populations, record the animal as a Jefferson complex salamander if key features are intermediate.
- Photograph responsibly: Take dorsal, side, head, and limb views without prolonged handling. Record date, location, weather, and nearby wetland type.
