Join to Add This SightingThe Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus) is a compact, high-elevation amphibian found only in California’s central Sierra Nevada. Despite its name, it is not restricted to Yosemite National Park. Its broader range includes scattered mountain basins, wet meadows, lake margins, and shallow seasonal pools elsewhere in the Sierra.
This species is especially notable for the different coloration of adult males and females. Breeding males are often yellow-green or olive, while females usually have contrasting dark blotches on a gray, tan, or brown background. Color varies, however, and identification should combine pattern, body shape, habitat, and geographic location.
Yosemite toads spend much of the year hidden underground or beneath cover. They emerge after snowmelt, breed in shallow water, and forage across surrounding meadows and uplands during the short mountain summer.

Appearance and Field Marks
The Yosemite toad has a squat body, a broad head, short limbs, and a rounded snout. Its back bears scattered rounded warts, while the underside is generally pale. The parotoid glands—raised glands behind the eyes—are usually narrow and elongated. As in other true toads, these glands produce defensive secretions and should not be touched unnecessarily.
Adult coloration is unusually variable and differs strongly between the sexes during the breeding period. Mature males are typically rather uniform yellow-green, olive, bronze, or greenish brown. Small dark flecks or subdued markings may be present. The throat may darken during breeding, and males develop dark nuptial pads on the inner fingers for gripping females.
Females tend to be more boldly patterned. Their gray, brown, or tan backs usually carry irregular blackish or dark brown blotches with pale borders. A narrow pale stripe may run along the middle of the back, but it is inconsistent and should not be treated as essential.
Recently metamorphosed juveniles are tiny and dark, frequently showing little of the adult sexual color difference. Older juveniles may remain difficult to distinguish from other young western toads without close attention to range and habitat.

Size and Measurements
Most adults measure approximately 4.5–7.5 cm (1.8–3 inches) from snout to vent. Females generally average larger and heavier than males, although the size ranges overlap. Body mass changes with sex, season, hydration, and reproductive condition, making length more useful than weight for field identification.
Yosemite toads have relatively short hind limbs and are not powerful long-distance jumpers. Their compact proportions suit movement through dense meadow vegetation and over uneven, saturated ground. Tadpoles begin very small and grow over several weeks before metamorphosing into toadlets generally less than 2 cm long.
Range and Distribution
The Yosemite toad is endemic to California, meaning it occurs naturally nowhere else. Its range follows the central crest and western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, with some populations in basins east of the crest. It occurs from the vicinity of Alpine County south through Yosemite and adjoining mountain regions toward the central-southern Sierra.
Populations are not distributed continuously. Suitable breeding habitat occurs as a network of isolated meadows, pond complexes, and shallow wetlands separated by forests, rocky ridges, and drier slopes. Local abundance can vary sharply among nearby basins and from year to year.
The species is primarily associated with elevations of roughly 1,500–3,600 m (about 4,900–11,800 feet), though reported limits vary by locality. Elevation alone does not confirm identification; observers should also consider habitat, coloration, and whether the site lies within the known central Sierra range.

Habitat
Yosemite toads inhabit montane and subalpine landscapes shaped by snow. Breeding occurs in extremely shallow, sun-warmed water, including flooded meadow edges, snowmelt pools, quiet pond margins, and slow channels. Favored breeding sites often have gently sloping shores, little current, and patches of sedges or low grasses.
Adults do not remain in breeding pools all summer. After reproduction, they disperse into moist meadows, willow patches, lodgepole pine forest, and drier upland sites. They shelter in rodent burrows, spaces under logs or rocks, root cavities, and soil cracks. These terrestrial retreats can be some distance from open water.
Because shallow pools may dry quickly, breeding success depends partly on the timing of snowmelt and summer drying. A pool must remain wet long enough for eggs to hatch and tadpoles to complete metamorphosis, but warm, fish-free shallows can also provide favorable conditions for rapid larval development.

Behavior
During the cool mountain growing season, Yosemite toads may be active by day. Individuals bask in open meadow vegetation or along pool margins, especially when air temperatures are moderate. They reduce activity during cold, intensely hot, or dry conditions and retreat into protected sites.
Adults usually move by walking and short hops. Their subdued movement and mottled colors can make females nearly invisible against mud, sedges, and granite gravel. When threatened, a toad may crouch, remain still, inflate its body, or release defensive skin secretions.
Winter occupies much of the year at high elevations. Toads overwinter below the frost line in mammal burrows, natural cavities, or other insulated retreats. Emergence is linked to thawing ground and snowmelt, and the exact seasonal schedule differs by elevation, slope, and annual snowpack.
Diet and Hunting
Adult Yosemite toads are opportunistic predators of small terrestrial invertebrates. Their diet includes beetles, ants, flies, spiders, moth larvae, and other arthropods available in mountain meadows and forest openings. Juveniles take correspondingly smaller prey.
A foraging toad usually waits for movement, then lunges or flicks out its sticky tongue. Rather than actively chasing prey over long distances, it often feeds from a favorable position among short plants or damp ground. Feeding activity is concentrated in the relatively brief period between spring emergence and autumn retreat.
Tadpoles feed differently from adults. They graze on algae, microbial films, decaying plant matter, and fine organic material in shallow water. Their feeding helps transfer nutrients through small seasonal wetlands, while the tadpoles themselves become prey for aquatic insects, birds, snakes, and other predators.

Vocalizations
The male’s advertisement call is a long, musical trill given from shallow water or its immediate edge. Individual notes blend into a sustained, pulsing sound that may carry across an open meadow. The scientific name canorus means melodious or tuneful, referring to this distinctive voice.
Calling is most frequent during the short breeding period after snowmelt. A chorus may include scattered males rather than a tightly packed group. Air temperature, water temperature, wind, and time of day can affect calling activity. Males may call during daylight as well as in the evening, particularly under mild conditions.
Breeding and Nesting
Yosemite toads do not construct nests. Breeding adults gather in shallow pools, flooded meadows, and quiet pond margins soon after suitable sites become free of snow and ice. At lower elevations this may begin in late spring; in high basins it can occur well into summer.
Males often arrive first and call from water only a few centimeters deep. A male grasps a female behind the forelimbs in axillary amplexus. The female releases eggs as the male fertilizes them externally. Eggs are deposited in gelatinous strings, sometimes wound loosely through submerged vegetation or laid across the bottom.
Breeding water is often so shallow that adults are only partly submerged. This water warms rapidly in sunlight, supporting egg and tadpole development, but it is also vulnerable to drying and sudden freezing.
Reproduction
A female may produce hundreds to more than a thousand eggs, with clutch size varying with her body size and condition. Dark embryos are visible within the clear gelatinous strands. Development proceeds more rapidly in warm shallows and more slowly during cold weather.
The tadpoles are generally black or very dark brown, with rounded bodies and muscular tails. They may form dense groups in warm, protected margins. Metamorphosis must be completed before seasonal pools disappear or become unsuitable. Newly transformed toadlets leave the water with a short residual tail that is soon absorbed.
Juveniles require several years to reach sexual maturity. Survival is naturally low during early life stages, and reproduction may fail in years when pools dry too soon. Conversely, deep or cold permanent water is not necessarily optimal; the species is closely adapted to shallow, productive wetlands with a suitable seasonal window.

Similar Species
Western toad: The western toad (Anaxyrus boreas) is the most likely source of confusion. It often has a prominent pale dorsal stripe and more uniformly warted skin. Yosemite toads generally have narrower parotoid glands, more pronounced male–female color differences, and a stronger association with high central Sierra meadows. Young animals can be especially difficult to separate.
Black toad: The black toad (Anaxyrus exsul) is dark, often with contrasting pale flecks or lines, and has a highly restricted distribution in the Deep Springs Valley region east of the Sierra. Geographic location usually resolves the identification.
Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog: This mountain frog has smooth, moist-looking skin, longer hind legs, visible dorsolateral folds, and no parotoid glands. It tends to leap strongly into water, whereas a Yosemite toad often walks or makes short hops.
Color by itself is unreliable. Light, temperature, moisture, age, and sex can all change a toad’s apparent appearance.
Conservation
The Yosemite toad is federally listed as threatened. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service species profile provides current federal status and conservation information.
Major concerns include habitat alteration, changes in meadow hydrology, prolonged drought, climate-driven shifts in snowpack, disease, and isolated breeding populations. Chytridiomycosis, caused by the amphibian chytrid fungus, has been detected in the species, although disease effects can differ among populations and years. Livestock use, roads, recreation, and altered water movement may also affect particular sites.
Conservation work includes monitoring populations, protecting breeding wetlands and terrestrial refuges, restoring meadow hydrology, managing land use, and reducing the accidental spread of pathogens. Visitors can help by staying on established routes where practical, keeping dogs out of occupied pools, leaving rocks and logs undisturbed, and never collecting toads or tadpoles.
Field Identification Tips
- Confirm that the location lies in the central Sierra Nevada and within high-elevation meadow country.
- Look beside very shallow, quiet water after snowmelt, but also scan adjacent meadow and forest edges later in summer.
- For greenish males, check the broad toad-like body, short legs, dry warty skin, and parotoid glands.
- For females, look for large dark blotches with narrow pale borders on a gray or brown background.
- Do not rely on a pale dorsal stripe; it may be present, faint, or absent.
- Listen for a sustained musical trill during the breeding season.
- Photograph the animal from a respectful distance and record habitat and elevation rather than handling it.
- Disinfect footwear and field equipment before moving between wetlands to reduce disease transmission.
