Woodhouse’s Toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii) is a sturdy, adaptable North American toad associated with river valleys, floodplains, grasslands, farms, and other open country. It is most conspicuous on warm nights, especially after rain, when adults emerge to feed or gather at shallow breeding water.

Color varies considerably, so identification should not rest on a single feature. The most useful combination includes elongated parotoid glands behind the eyes, prominent cranial crests, several warts within many dark dorsal spots, a pale mid-dorsal stripe, and an underside that is usually plain or only lightly marked. Geographic location and voice can help resolve difficult individuals.

Appearance and Field Marks

Irregular blackish or dark-brown spots commonly cover the back and limbs. Several warts may sit inside one dark spot, though this feature varies and should be used with other marks. A narrow pale vertebral stripe is frequent and may be conspicuous in some animals but faint or absent in others.

Behind each eye is an elongated parotoid gland, a raised structure that produces defensive secretions. The cranial crests are strong and generally meet or closely approach the parotoid glands. The eye has a horizontal pupil and a coppery to golden iris. The belly is cream or white and typically plain, sometimes with scattered dark flecks. Adult breeding males develop a dark throat associated with the vocal sac.

Size and Measurements

Most Woodhouse’s Toad adults measure approximately 2.5–5 inches (6.4–12.7 centimeters) from snout to vent. Females commonly average larger and heavier than males, although size alone does not reliably determine sex. Newly transformed toadlets are much smaller and may be less than an inch long.

Body condition changes with season and hydration. A recently emerged or well-hydrated animal can appear broad and smooth between the warts, while a dry or inactive toad may look flatter and more angular. Field measurements should use snout-to-vent length rather than total length because the hind legs can be held in different positions.

Range and Distribution

Woodhouse’s Toad has a broad distribution across central and western North America. Its range extends across much of the Great Plains and interior western United States, reaches parts of the Pacific Northwest through major river systems, and continues south into Texas and northern Mexico. Eastern range limits approach areas occupied by Fowler’s Toad, while other boundaries meet several closely related western species.

Distribution is not uniform. Populations often follow river corridors, reservoirs, irrigation networks, and areas with suitable loose soil. Taxonomic treatments and mapped boundaries may differ around contact zones, so records near a range edge deserve particular care. Habitat

Woodhouse’s Toads favors open or partly open landscapes, including floodplains, stream terraces, sandy riverbanks, prairies, shrublands, desert-edge grasslands, farmland, vacant lots, and suburban margins. It is especially successful in disturbed habitats where bare soil provides burrowing sites and artificial water supplies breeding habitat.

Adults spend much of their time away from permanent water. During the day they shelter in rodent burrows, soil cracks, spaces beneath logs or debris, and self-dug shallow retreats. Breeding sites include pond margins, flooded fields, oxbows, roadside ditches, slow stream backwaters, reservoir shallows, and temporary rain pools. Fish-free seasonal water may provide safer nursery habitat for eggs and tadpoles.

Behavior

Woodhouse’s Toads are mainly nocturnal, although they may be active by day during cool, rainy weather. An individual often sits near an insect-rich opening and makes short hops to capture passing prey. When approached, it may remain motionless, inflate its body, crouch against the ground, or release watery urine. Persistent handling can stimulate milky secretions from the parotoid glands.

In cold or very dry periods, these toads retreat underground and reduce activity. Loose soil is important because adults can dig backward using hardened areas on the hind feet. Seasonal emergence varies with latitude and elevation, but warm rainfall is a common trigger. Roadways can attract feeding toads and also expose them to vehicle mortality.

Diet and Hunting

Woodhouse’s Toads eat a broad selection of small terrestrial invertebrates, including beetles, ants, crickets, grasshoppers, moths, flies, spiders, and other arthropods. Larger individuals may take almost any suitably sized moving prey they can overpower. Diet differs among habitats and reflects local prey availability rather than narrow specialization.

The toad usually hunts by waiting and watching. Once prey moves within range, it lunges forward and captures it with a quick extension of the sticky tongue. Outdoor lights, irrigated lawns, barnyards, and trail edges can create productive feeding areas. Tadpoles feed differently, grazing on algae, microorganisms, suspended organic material, and decomposing plant matter in shallow water.

Vocalizations

The Woodhouse’s Toad call is a forceful, nasal, drawn-out waaaah, sometimes compared with the bleat of a sheep or a harsh human cry. Calls usually last a few seconds and may be repeated at irregular intervals. A large chorus can carry across open country on still nights.

Males call from shallow water, muddy banks, floating vegetation, or the immediate shoreline. Call speed and duration change with temperature and social conditions. The voice is valuable for identification because it lacks the prolonged musical trill of the American Toad and differs from the short, explosive calls of several western spadefoots. Recordings are preferable to written imitations when comparing local species.

Breeding and Nesting

Woodhouse’s Toad breeding generally occurs during spring or early summer, but timing varies greatly across the range. In arid regions, substantial warm-season rainfall may initiate short, intense breeding events. Farther north, choruses often begin after seasonal thaw and warming. Calling may continue over an extended period where water remains available.

Woodhouse’s Toads do not build nests in the bird-like sense. Females deposit eggs in long, gelatinous strings in shallow water, often winding them through submerged plants or laying them across the bottom. They commonly use temporary pools, ditches, pond edges, and quiet backwaters. A site must hold water long enough for tadpoles to complete development, yet permanent water with abundant fish may carry greater predation risk.

Reproduction

A large female may produce many thousands of eggs, but output varies with her size, condition, and population. Eggs are dark above and enclosed within clear gelatinous strings.

Embryos can hatch within several days under warm conditions, although temperature strongly affects the schedule. The dark tadpoles often gather in shallow, sun-warmed water. Development from hatching to metamorphosis commonly takes several weeks and may accelerate as a temporary pool shrinks. Newly transformed toadlets leave the water with a residual tail that is soon absorbed. Survival is low at every stage because eggs and larvae face drying, temperature extremes, predators, and disease.

Similar Species

Fowler’s Toad: Fowler’s Toad often has three or more warts within each dark dorsal spot and a mostly plain belly, producing substantial overlap with Woodhouse’s Toad. Cranial-crest and parotoid relationships, voice, range, and multiple photographs are more useful than wart counts alone. Hybridization or intermediate-looking animals may occur in contact areas.

American Toad: The American Toad usually has only one or two large warts in each dark spot and often has bold dark spotting on the chest or belly. Its breeding call is a long, musical trill.

Great Plains Toad: This species generally has sharply defined, paired dark blotches outlined in pale color and often a prominent raised boss between the eyes. Its cranial crests typically do not connect to the parotoid glands in the same way.

Western Toad: The Western Toad usually has weak or absent cranial crests and a prominent pale dorsal stripe. Consider range overlap and local habitat.

Conservation

Woodhouse’s Toad is generally regarded as widespread and secure across much of its range, and it can persist in agricultural or suburban settings. That broad status should not obscure local declines or isolated peripheral populations. Wetland drainage, altered river flows, prolonged drought, road mortality, contaminants, introduced fish, invasive predators, and disease can reduce breeding success.

Useful conservation measures include protecting shallow seasonal wetlands, retaining natural floodplain connections, reducing pesticide drift, and providing safe terrestrial cover around breeding water. Artificial ponds can help when they have gently sloping margins, nearby shelter, and little or no predatory fish. Toads should not be relocated between watersheds because translocation can spread pathogens or disrupt locally adapted populations.

  1. Confirm that the animal is a true toad: look for dry-looking warty skin, short legs, and large parotoid glands.
  2. Photograph the back, top of the head, parotoid glands, and belly if this can be done without prolonged handling.
  3. Check whether a pale stripe runs down the back and whether several warts occur within many dark spots.
  4. Examine how the cranial crests approach the parotoid glands; use this as part of a feature combination, not by itself.
  5. Listen for the loud, nasal call and note the breeding habitat.
  6. Compare the observation with local range information because neighboring toad species vary by region.

Use clean, wet hands only when handling is necessary; avoid insect repellent or sunscreen contact, and release the toad exactly where you found it. At night, minimize bright light and never disturb an active breeding pair merely to obtain a photograph.
