Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are spring-blooming woodland wildflowers known for clusters of nodding, trumpet-shaped flowers. Pink buds usually open into clear blue or blue-violet blossoms, creating a distinctive two-toned display. Large colonies may cover moist floodplain forests before the tree canopy fully leafs out.
This herbaceous perennial is a spring ephemeral. It emerges early, flowers and produces seed in spring, then usually dies back and becomes dormant by midsummer. Its brief aboveground season can make a familiar colony seem to disappear entirely later in the year.

Growing It in a Native Garden

Plant nursery-propagated specimens rather than collecting from the wild. Container-grown plants are usually easiest to establish in spring or autumn.
