The Texas toad (Anaxyrus speciosus) is a sturdy, ground-dwelling amphibian of the southern Great Plains and adjacent parts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is especially associated with open country: shortgrass plains, livestock pastures, cultivated land, mesquite scrub, and other places where loose soil allows it to burrow.
Like many toads in dry regions, this species may remain hidden for long periods. Warm rain can quickly transform an apparently toad-free landscape, drawing adults from underground retreats to temporary pools. Identification is easiest when several features are considered together, including body shape, dorsal pattern, cranial crests, parotoid glands, and the structure of the hind feet.

Quick Identification
- Overall shape: Compact, broad-bodied toad with a relatively small head.
- Color: Gray, tan, brownish, olive, or occasionally greenish, usually with irregular dark spots.
- Dorsal stripe: A narrow pale line often runs down the middle of the back, although it may be weak or absent.
- Skin: Dry-looking and covered with rounded warts; dark dorsal spots often enclose multiple small warts.
- Head: Cranial crests are absent or weak compared with those of several similar Great Plains toads.
- Parotoid glands: Distinct oval or elongated glands behind the eyes.
- Hind feet: Equipped with dark, hardened digging tubercles suited to burrowing backward into soil.
- Voice: A loud, metallic trill or pulsating call, usually heard after warm-season rain.
Appearance and Field Marks
The Texas toad has the squat build typical of true toads. Its back is rough and warty, while the underside is generally pale and more finely textured. Dorsal coloration varies with the individual, soil, lighting, and moisture. Gray or tan animals can blend almost perfectly with dry ground, whereas some individuals show olive or muted green tones.
Irregular dark blotches usually cover the back and upper limbs. These markings are often smaller and less cleanly outlined than the large, paired blotches of a Great Plains toad. A cream, yellowish, or whitish vertebral stripe is common but not universal. The belly is usually plain or only lightly marked.
The eyes have horizontal pupils and coppery to golden irises. Behind each eye is a raised parotoid gland that produces defensive secretions. The head lacks the strongly elevated cranial ridges seen in Gulf Coast and Great Plains toads. Because individual patterning varies, evaluate weak head crests alongside the dorsal spots, body proportions, range, and call.

Size and Measurements
Most adult Texas toads measure approximately 2 to 3.5 inches (5 to 9 centimeters) in snout-to-vent length. Females tend to be larger and heavier-bodied than males, particularly during the breeding season. Newly transformed juveniles are much smaller and may be encountered in numbers near a drying pool.
Take field measurements only when needed and with clean, wet hands or powder-free gloves. Snout-to-vent length is measured from the tip of the snout to the rear edge of the body, not to the tips of the extended legs. Apparent size can be misleading when a toad inflates its lungs as a defensive response.
Range and Distribution
The Texas toad occurs primarily across Texas and neighboring portions of the southern Great Plains. Its United States range extends into eastern New Mexico, Oklahoma, and southern Kansas. It also occurs southward into northeastern Mexico, although local distribution becomes uneven where suitable soils and seasonal breeding water are scarce.
Within this broad range, the species may be locally common but inconspicuous. Records often cluster around roads, ranch ponds, playa basins, flooded fields, and other sites checked after heavy rain. Habitat
Texas toads inhabit grasslands, prairies, savannas, open woodland edges, shrublands, farmland, and grazed pasture. They are particularly well adapted to flat or gently rolling country with friable, sandy, or loamy soil. Loose earth permits rapid burrowing, an essential defense against heat and water loss.
Breeding habitat is often temporary. Rain-filled roadside ditches, shallow stock tanks, playas, flooded furrows, and ephemeral pools may all be used. Fish-free water is valuable because it reduces predation on eggs and tadpoles. Outside the breeding season, nearby uplands can be as important as the pond itself because adults spend much of the year underground.

Behavior
This toad is primarily nocturnal, becoming active after sunset when temperatures are moderate and humidity rises. During dry weather, it shelters in self-dug burrows, rodent holes, cracks, or spaces beneath ground cover. A Texas toad typically digs backward, pushing soil aside with hardened tubercles on its hind feet.
Rainfall strongly influences surface activity. Following a summer storm, adults may appear on roads or move toward newly filled depressions. If threatened, a toad may crouch, inflate its body, urinate, or release irritating secretions from its parotoid glands. These secretions discourage many predators but are not an aggressive weapon. Toads should not be handled unnecessarily, and hands should be washed afterward.
Diet and Hunting
Adult Texas toads eat a varied assortment of small terrestrial invertebrates. Likely prey includes beetles, ants, termites, crickets, grasshoppers, moths, spiders, and other arthropods small enough to swallow. Diet changes with prey availability and toad size.
Rather than pursuing prey over long distances, the toad usually waits on the ground and reacts to movement. A quick extension of the sticky tongue captures smaller prey, while larger items may be seized with the mouth. Feeding commonly takes place at night on open soil, along insect-rich edges, or near artificial lights. Tadpoles feed differently, grazing on algae, microbes, suspended organic material, and soft plant matter.

Vocalizations
The male’s advertisement call is a loud, sustained trill with a metallic or mechanical quality. Large choruses may sound continuous because neighboring males overlap their calls. Calling usually begins after substantial warm-weather rainfall and can continue for hours from shallow water.
Voice is one of the most useful identification tools where several toad species occur together. Note the call’s pitch, pulse rate, duration, and whether the caller is in open shallows or concealed vegetation. Recordings are preferable to approaching closely, since disturbance can cause an entire chorus to stop temporarily.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding is closely tied to rainfall and may occur from spring through summer, with timing varying by latitude and local weather. In especially dry areas, breeding activity can be brief and irregular. Males gather at newly filled pools and call while sitting in very shallow water or along the margin.
Texas toads do not construct nests or provide parental care. A male clasps a female behind the forelimbs in axillary amplexus. As the female releases eggs, the male fertilizes them externally. Eggs are deposited in long, gelatinous strings that may wind around submerged plants or rest on the bottom of shallow water.
Reproduction
A female may produce several thousand eggs, but output varies with her size and condition. Embryos generally develop quickly in warm water, an adaptation to pools that can evaporate rapidly. Cool temperatures, pond depth, food supply, and crowding all affect the pace of development.
The small, dark tadpoles often gather in shallow, sun-warmed areas. They face heavy predation from aquatic insects, birds, snakes, and other amphibians. As metamorphosis approaches, hind limbs enlarge, forelimbs emerge, and the tail is absorbed. Tiny toadlets then leave the water and disperse into surrounding ground cover. Survival can be low, but producing many offspring during favorable rains helps offset substantial losses.

Similar Species
Great Plains toad: The Great Plains toad (Anaxyrus cognatus) usually has large, paired dark blotches with pale borders and more conspicuous cranial crests. Its pattern often appears bolder and more symmetrical. Calls also differ and can be decisive.
Woodhouse’s toad: Woodhouse’s toad (Anaxyrus woodhousii) is often longer-headed and may show a strong pale dorsal stripe. Its parotoid glands are elongated, and cranial ridges are usually more evident. Pattern alone is unreliable where the species overlap.
Gulf Coast toad: The Gulf Coast toad (Incilius nebulifer) has prominent, sharply defined cranial crests and generally looks more angular around the head. It is most likely to cause confusion in central and eastern Texas.
American and green toads: These may occur near the northeastern edge of the Texas toad’s distribution. Green toads often show green coloration and small dark marks, while American toads typically have better-developed head crests and different parotoid relationships. Geographic location should support, not replace, examination of physical traits.
Conservation
The Texas toad remains widespread, and no broad range-wide decline is usually inferred from its current distribution. Nevertheless, local populations can be affected by the loss of temporary wetlands, soil compaction, prolonged drought, pesticide exposure, disease, and road mortality during rain-driven movements.
Conservation is most effective when both breeding pools and surrounding uplands are protected. Temporary ponds should not be dismissed as unimportant simply because they remain dry for much of the year. Avoiding pesticide use near wetlands, retaining natural soil and vegetation, and limiting vehicle travel on rainy nights can benefit this and other amphibians.
Field Identification Tips
- Search after warm rain, especially around shallow temporary water and on low-traffic roads.
- Photograph the back, side of the head, parotoid glands, and hind feet without forcing the animal into unnatural positions.
- Look for weak or absent cranial crests, irregular dark dorsal spots, and a possible pale mid-back stripe.
- Record the advertisement call and note the time, air temperature, rainfall, and habitat.
- Use several traits together; coloration alone is too variable for dependable identification.
- Do not move a toad away from its capture point. If helping one across a road, move it only in the direction it was already traveling when safe and lawful.
- Disinfect footwear and equipment between wetlands to reduce the risk of spreading amphibian pathogens.
