The striped newt (Notophthalmus perstriatus) is a small, distinctively marked salamander of the southeastern United States. Its known range is centered on northern Florida and southeastern Georgia, where it depends on a close association between dry, sandy uplands and isolated seasonal wetlands. Although colorful adults can be recognizable at close range, much of the species’ life is spent underground or beneath cover, making encounters uncommon.
Like other newts, the striped newt may pass through aquatic larval, terrestrial juvenile, and aquatic adult stages. Its life cycle is unusually flexible: some individuals retain larval features, including external gills, while becoming reproductively mature in water. Successful identification therefore requires attention to life stage as well as color and pattern.
Observers should avoid handling striped newts. Newts produce defensive skin secretions, and handling can damage their permeable skin. View or photograph an animal where it was found, never apply insect repellent before contact with amphibians, and do not move newts between wetlands.
Quick Identification

Appearance and Field Marks
An adult striped newt has an elongated body, a relatively small head, and four short legs. The tail is approximately as long as the head and body combined, although proportions vary with age, condition, and life stage. Aquatic animals generally have a more compressed, fin-like tail than terrestrial individuals.
The paired reddish dorsolateral stripes are the most useful field marks. They may be bright orange-red, muted brick red, or partially broken into elongated marks. Lighting, wet skin, mud, and individual variation can make the stripes less obvious than in field-guide illustrations. Small reddish spots may occur between or near the stripes.
The ground color ranges from olive to dark brown or blackish. The belly is usually yellowish and marked with black spots or blotches. Terrestrial juveniles, commonly called efts, tend to have dry-looking, granular skin and brighter warning coloration. Aquatic adults have smoother skin and a more developed tail fin.
Sex is difficult to determine outside the breeding season. In breeding condition, males may show a more prominent cloacal region, relatively enlarged hind limbs, and a deeper tail fin. Females are often heavier-bodied when carrying eggs, but size and body shape alone do not provide a certain identification.

Size and Measurements
Adult striped newts are generally about 5–10 cm (2–4 in) in total length, including the tail. Many are near the middle of that range. Recently transformed juveniles are smaller, while unusually large adults may approach the upper limit.
Field measurements should be treated cautiously because tail injuries, partial regeneration, posture, and the distinction between snout-to-vent length and total length can produce different figures. Published body weights are not commonly provided in general field references and can fluctuate with hydration, feeding, reproductive condition, and life stage.
Range and Distribution
The striped newt is native to the southeastern Coastal Plain, with a restricted and fragmented distribution in southeastern Georgia and northern Florida. Records are concentrated in landscapes with deep sandy soils and numerous isolated wetlands. The species is not evenly distributed throughout this region; suitable-looking ponds may be unoccupied, and substantial distances can separate known populations.
Its range is sometimes described as consisting of eastern and western population regions, with losses and gaps caused by habitat conversion and wetland alteration. Because adults spend long periods out of sight and breeding varies with rainfall, a lack of observations during a single survey does not necessarily demonstrate absence.

Habitat
Striped newts require both aquatic breeding sites and surrounding terrestrial habitat. Breeding usually occurs in shallow, isolated ponds that fill seasonally and lack permanent fish populations. Suitable wetlands may be described as ephemeral ponds, depression marshes, sinkhole ponds, or basin wetlands. Vegetation can include grasses, sedges, rushes, and submerged or emergent plants used for egg attachment and shelter.
The surrounding uplands are commonly longleaf-pine sandhill, pine flatwoods, scrubby pine woodland, or related habitats on sandy soils. Natural or carefully managed fire helps maintain open uplands and suitable wetland structure. During terrestrial periods, newts shelter in burrows, root channels, leaf litter, rotting wood, and other humid spaces below the surface.
A breeding pond cannot support a population indefinitely if it is isolated from usable upland habitat. Newts must travel between wetlands and terrestrial refuges, so roads, intensive soil disturbance, dense plantation forestry, and development can disrupt essential movements.

Behavior
Striped newts are secretive for much of the year. Terrestrial animals avoid drying conditions by remaining beneath cover or underground and may become more active during mild, wet weather. Seasonal movements toward breeding ponds are strongly influenced by rainfall, pond filling, and temperature.
In water, adults walk along the bottom, move through vegetation, and swim with side-to-side movements of the body and tail. They may surface periodically. When threatened, a newt may remain motionless, retreat into vegetation, or display its brighter underside. Skin secretions provide a chemical defense, but they do not make the animal safe from every predator.
Do not collect or relocate individuals. Moving amphibians can spread pathogens, mix separated populations, and place an animal in unsuitable habitat. Clean and disinfect boots and field equipment between wetlands according to current amphibian-survey protocols.
Diet and Hunting
Striped newts eat small animals they can capture and swallow whole. Aquatic prey may include insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms, snails, and other pond invertebrates. Terrestrial juveniles and adults take small arthropods and other soft-bodied invertebrates found in litter or soil.
Hunting is primarily visual and opportunistic at close range, although chemical cues may also help newts locate food. An aquatic newt typically approaches slowly and snaps at moving prey. Larvae feed on minute aquatic invertebrates and take progressively larger prey as they grow.
Diet changes with prey availability, body size, and life stage. Cannibalism or predation on amphibian eggs and very small larvae may occur in newts, but such behavior should not be assumed from every pond observation.

Vocalizations
Striped newts do not produce the advertisement calls familiar from frogs and toads. They are effectively silent during ordinary field observation, and researchers locate breeding populations through visual surveys, traps, dip nets, or environmental DNA rather than by listening for calls.
Any faint clicking or movement noise heard near a pond is unlikely to be a dependable identification feature. Frogs calling from the same wetland can provide useful clues about water conditions, but they do not confirm the presence of striped newts.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding generally follows the filling of seasonal ponds, often during the cooler portion of the year, but timing varies among sites and years. Rainfall and hydroperiod are more important than a fixed calendar date. In drought years, adults may remain in terrestrial refuges, and reproduction may be limited or absent.
During courtship, a male follows a female and positions himself near her, using tail movements and chemical signals. As in other newts, sperm is transferred by a spermatophore rather than through external spawning. The female picks up the sperm packet with her cloaca.
Striped newts do not build a nest or guard a clutch. A female deposits eggs individually, often folding or attaching them among aquatic vegetation. Dispersing eggs through the pond may reduce the chance that one disturbance or predator will destroy the entire reproductive effort.
Reproduction
Egg development depends on water temperature and other pond conditions. Newly hatched larvae have external gills and initially small limbs. As they grow, all four limbs become obvious, the tail remains finned, and the larvae prey on small aquatic organisms.
Many larvae eventually metamorphose, lose their external gills, and leave the pond as terrestrial efts. After a period in the uplands, mature animals return to water to breed. The duration of each stage varies and may be influenced by rainfall, pond persistence, food, and local climate.
Some striped newts follow an alternative pathway called paedomorphosis. These individuals become sexually mature while retaining larval characteristics such as external gills and an aquatic body form. Paedomorphs can reproduce in a pond without first passing through a terrestrial eft stage. If a pond begins to dry, some may later transform, although outcomes depend on developmental condition and environmental circumstances.

Similar Species
The eastern newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) is the most important comparison. Eastern newts typically show separate red spots, often outlined in black, rather than the striped newt’s paired red dorsolateral stripes. Eastern-newt efts are frequently vivid orange, while striped-newt efts usually retain a darker ground color with clear longitudinal markings. Pattern variation occurs, so observers should examine the entire animal and consider location.
Other small salamanders may share the same region but generally lack the combination of paired red stripes, a yellow spotted belly, and classic newt body shape. Dusky salamanders tend to have a more robust head and occur near flowing water. Mole salamanders have broader bodies and tails and do not show the same red-striped pattern. Larval identification is considerably harder and may require close examination by an experienced biologist.
Conservation
The striped newt is commonly assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List and is regarded as a species of substantial conservation concern within its limited range. Local and legal classifications can differ, and you should check federal or state status before surveys, land management, or permitting decisions.
Major pressures include loss and fragmentation of sandhill habitat, conversion of longleaf-pine landscapes, altered fire regimes, wetland drainage, groundwater changes, prolonged drought, road mortality, and the introduction of predatory fish. Off-road vehicle use and soil disturbance can damage both pond basins and the sandy uplands used during terrestrial periods.
Conservation focuses on protecting networks of breeding ponds, maintaining broad upland buffers and travel corridors, restoring natural fire patterns, and preventing fish introductions. Captive propagation and reintroduction have also been used at selected sites, but long-term success depends on functional habitat and suitable pond hydrology.
Field Identification Tips
- Look for two reddish lines running lengthwise on a dark olive or brown back, not merely isolated red spots.
- Confirm the yellowish, dark-spotted underside when you can see it without handling the animal.
- Use geography cautiously: northern Florida or southeastern Georgia supports the identification, but range alone is not proof.
- Consider life stage. A gilled aquatic individual may be a larva or a mature paedomorph.
- Search visually after appropriate rainfall around fish-free seasonal ponds, while following all access and survey regulations.
- Photograph the back, side, tail, and visible underside from multiple angles. Include a scale without touching the animal.
- Do not rely on color alone. Wet skin, flash photography, mud, and age can alter apparent brightness.
- Submit well-documented observations to a state wildlife agency or established biodiversity-recording program, especially outside the familiar range.
