The Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) is a large, heavy-bodied woodland salamander of eastern North America. Its dark body and paired rows of yellow or orange spots make a well-marked adult one of the region’s easiest salamanders to recognize. Finding one can be less straightforward: adults spend much of the year underground, beneath logs, or in small mammal burrows.
Spotted Salamanders belong to the mole salamander family, Ambystomatidae. They are most conspicuous during mild, rainy nights in late winter or spring, when adults migrate to temporary woodland pools to breed. At other times, careful searching in suitable forest habitat may reveal one under deep, moist cover. Quick Identification

Appearance and Field Marks
An adult Spotted Salamander has smooth, moist-looking skin and a robust build. The ground color varies from charcoal gray to nearly black, occasionally with a brownish or bluish cast. The characteristic spots are usually arranged in two uneven lines along the back. Spots near the head often appear orange, while those farther back tend to be yellow. Their number, size, and arrangement vary among individuals, and a few salamanders have faint spots or none at all.
The head is broad and rounded rather than pointed. The eyes are moderately prominent, but they do not project dramatically beyond the sides of the head. Four toes occur on each front foot and five on each hind foot. The tail is thick at the base and becomes more compressed toward its tip, especially during the breeding season.
The belly generally lacks bold markings. This combination of a plain dark underside, stocky proportions, and conspicuous dorsal spots separates adults from most other woodland salamanders. Juveniles resemble small adults after metamorphosis, although their spots may initially be less distinct.
Size and Measurements
Most adults measure approximately 15–20 cm (6–8 in) from snout to tail tip. Exceptionally large individuals may reach about 23–25 cm (9–10 in), but size varies with age, sex, locality, and physical condition. The tail accounts for a substantial portion of total length.
Females are often larger and heavier-bodied than males, particularly when carrying eggs. During the breeding season, males may appear relatively slender and may have a more swollen cloacal area. These differences are subtle and are not always reliable in a single animal outside the breeding period.
Recently transformed juveniles are much smaller, often only a few inches long. Aquatic larvae grow through spring or early summer before metamorphosing, with their final size influenced by water temperature, food availability, larval density, and the pool’s drying schedule.
Range and Distribution
Spotted Salamanders occupy a broad portion of eastern North America. Their range extends through parts of southeastern Canada and much of the eastern United States, from New England and the Great Lakes region south through the Appalachian and Atlantic states. The distribution continues into portions of the Southeast and westward into parts of the central United States.
They are not evenly distributed within this range. Local populations depend on suitable forest cover, underground retreats, and accessible breeding wetlands. A forest may appear appropriate but lack Spotted Salamanders if its seasonal pools have been drained, isolated by roads, stocked with fish, or separated from adequate upland habitat.

Habitat
Spotted Salamanders are associated primarily with mature or regenerating deciduous and mixed forests. They favor shaded ground with abundant leaf litter, rotting logs, root channels, and loose soil. Most adults spend the majority of their lives in underground refuges, including tunnels made by small mammals, emerging mainly on humid or rainy nights.
Breeding habitat usually consists of temporary or semi-permanent woodland pools, often called vernal pools. These wetlands commonly fill during winter or spring and dry later in the year. Because they frequently lack fish, they provide relatively safe nursery habitat for salamander eggs and larvae.
The surrounding upland forest is as important as the pool itself. Adults may live hundreds of feet from breeding water, and individuals must cross the forest floor during seasonal migrations. Intact leaf litter, downed wood, shaded soil, and safe travel corridors all contribute to a functional habitat complex.

Behavior
This species is secretive, nocturnal, and largely fossorial. During dry or hot weather, adults remain below ground where humidity and temperature are more stable. They may use the same general home area for years and often return to the same breeding pool, although movements vary among individuals and landscapes.
Above-ground activity increases during wet, mild conditions. The best-known movement is the synchronized breeding migration sometimes called a “big night,” when many salamanders cross forest floors and roads during the first suitable rains of the season.
When threatened, a Spotted Salamander may freeze, tuck its head down, raise or wave its tail, or release a sticky, unpleasant secretion from skin glands. The secretion discourages some predators and may irritate eyes or mucous membranes. Therefore, the salamander should be observed without unnecessary handling.
Diet and Hunting
Adult Spotted Salamanders are opportunistic predators of small invertebrates. Their diet may include earthworms, slugs, snails, insects, insect larvae, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, and other suitably sized prey. They usually forage at night or within underground passages, leaf litter, and decaying wood.
Rather than actively pursuing prey over long distances, an adult often waits until a small animal moves within reach, then snaps forward with its mouth. Chemical cues and movement probably help it locate food in dim or subterranean conditions.
Aquatic larvae consume tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, worms, and other aquatic organisms. Larger larvae may eat smaller amphibian larvae, including members of their own species when food is limited, or size differences are substantial.

Vocalizations
Spotted Salamanders do not produce the conspicuous advertisement calls associated with frogs and toads. Their breeding migrations and courtship are therefore usually silent to human observers. Any faint sounds made during close contact or distress are not dependable field-identification characters.
At a breeding pool, the most noticeable sounds generally come from rain, moving leaves, frogs, or other wetland animals. Identification should be based on appearance, habitat, season, and behavior rather than sound.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding usually occurs from late winter through spring, with timing shifting according to latitude, elevation, snowmelt, temperature, and rainfall. Adults commonly migrate on rainy nights when temperatures remain above freezing. In southern areas, movement may begin in winter; farther north, it may not occur until spring.
Males often arrive at pools before females. Courtship takes place underwater and may involve nudging, circling, rubbing, and other close movements. Males deposit packets of sperm called spermatophores on the pool bottom, and females take them into the cloaca for internal fertilization.
Spotted Salamanders do not construct a nest in the bird or mammal sense. Females attach rounded or elongated egg masses to submerged twigs, plant stems, or other supports. Several females may use the same part of a pool.
Reproduction
A female may deposit several gelatinous egg masses, each containing dozens of eggs. Total production often reaches well over one hundred eggs, although clutch size varies. Some masses are clear, while others appear milky or opaque because of differences in the surrounding jelly.
A green alga, commonly identified as Oophila amblystomatis, often grows in or around the egg masses. This close association can give older masses a greenish cast and may influence oxygen and nutrient conditions around developing embryos.
Hatching generally occurs after several weeks, depending strongly on water temperature. The larvae have feathery external gills, a finned tail, and initially lack the adult’s bold spots. They remain aquatic while feeding and growing. Metamorphosis commonly occurs in summer, but timing varies with climate and pool conditions. After the gills disappear, juveniles leave the water and enter the surrounding forest. Several years may pass before they return as breeding adults.

Similar Species
Jefferson Salamander: Usually slimmer, with a longer-looking body and toes. Its pale blue or silvery flecks are much smaller and less orderly than the Spotted Salamander’s round yellow spots.
Blue-spotted Salamander: Generally smaller and marked with fine blue or bluish-white flecking, especially on the sides and limbs. Hybrid mole salamanders can complicate identification in areas where related species overlap.
Marbled Salamander: Has bold white or silvery crossbands rather than separate yellow spots. It breeds mainly in autumn and often lays eggs in dry pool basins before they flood.
Eastern Tiger Salamander: Typically larger, with irregular yellow blotches, bars, or spots over more of the body. It often occurs in more open landscapes and has a limited, patchy eastern distribution.
Red-spotted Newt: The aquatic adult is smaller and more slender, with rougher skin, an olive body, and red spots outlined in black. The terrestrial eft is orange or red rather than black.
Conservation
The Spotted Salamander remains widespread and is not generally considered globally threatened, but local populations can decline when breeding pools or surrounding forests are lost. Vernal pools are especially vulnerable because small or temporary wetlands may be overlooked during land-use planning.
Important threats include wetland drainage, forest clearing, road mortality during breeding migrations, soil compaction, pollution, altered water levels, and the introduction of predatory fish. Roads can be particularly damaging when they separate upland retreats from breeding pools.
Conservation is most effective when it protects the complete habitat system: the pool, adjacent forest, underground refuges, and migration routes between them. Visitors can help by avoiding disturbance to egg masses and logs, cleaning field equipment between wetlands, and never releasing fish, bait, pets, or captive amphibians into natural pools.
Field Identification Tips
- Search during mild rain in late winter or spring, especially near known woodland pools. Wear reflective clothing and remain alert to traffic if surveying near roads.
- Look for a thick-bodied, dark salamander with large, separate yellow or orange spots. Fine blue flecks suggest another mole salamander.
- At breeding pools, scan shallow water with a flashlight rather than wading through egg-laying areas.
- Do not assume every gelatinous mass is from this species. Spotted Salamander masses are usually firm, compact clusters attached to submerged supports, but appearance changes as they develop.
- If lifting natural cover is permitted, replace each log or rock exactly as found. Avoid peeling bark or opening rotten wood.
- Handle only when necessary and with clean, wet, lotion-free hands. Never use insect repellent, sanitizer, or sunscreen immediately before contact.
- Photograph the back, sides, and overall habitat. A location record is often more useful than prolonged handling or capture.
Interesting Facts
- Adults may spend nearly their entire nonbreeding season underground, so a healthy population can remain unnoticed by people living nearby.
- Many individuals show strong fidelity to a particular breeding pool and surrounding upland area.
- The algae associated with their egg masses represent an unusually close relationship between a vertebrate and a photosynthetic organism.
- Clear and cloudy egg masses can occur in the same pool and belong to the same species.
- A mass migration may last only a few wet nights, making weather conditions more important than calendar date when planning a survey.
