The southern red-backed salamander (Plethodon serratus) is a small, woodland-dwelling salamander of the southeastern and south-central United States. Like other members of the family Plethodontidae, it has no lungs. Oxygen and carbon dioxide pass primarily through its moist skin and the lining of its mouth, making cool, humid shelter essential.
This salamander spends much of its life beneath leaf litter, logs, bark, and stones. It may be locally abundant yet seldom seen during hot, dry weather. Identification is complicated by its striped and unstriped color forms and by its resemblance to several related woodland salamanders. Appearance and Field Marks
The southern red-backed salamander has a narrow body, short limbs, a rounded head, and a tail that often accounts for close to half its total length. Its skin is smooth-looking but not glossy in the manner of some larger, heavily spotted woodland salamanders. Numerous vertical costal grooves mark the sides between the limbs.
Two broad color patterns occur. In the familiar red-backed form, a red, rust, orange-red, or copper-colored band runs from the head onto the tail. The stripe is usually narrow and may have irregular, notched edges. Its color and width vary among individuals and populations. The darker flanks often contain tiny pale flecks.
The unstriped, or lead-backed, form lacks the bright dorsal band. It is typically charcoal gray, brownish black, or nearly black above. Pale side flecking may remain visible. Recently hatched young resemble Miniature adults, although their proportions and colors can differ slightly from those of mature animals.
Color alone should not be treated as conclusive. Lighting, wet skin, soil staining, age, and local variation can alter the apparent shade of the stripe and body. Geographic location and comparison with neighboring species are often equally important.

Size and Measurements
Adults are generally about 6.5–10 cm (2.5–4 in) long, measured from the snout to the end of an intact tail. Some individuals fall outside that span, and a salamander that has lost or regenerated its tail will appear shorter. The body is slender, and adults ordinarily weigh only a few grams, although a standardized field weight range is not widely reported.
When comparing measurements, distinguish total length from snout–vent length. Researchers often use snout–vent length because tails can be dropped, damaged, or partially regenerated. Size by itself rarely separates this species from other small Plethodon.
Range and Distribution
The species has a broad but irregular distribution in the southeastern and south-central United States. Populations occur in portions of the southern Appalachian region and neighboring uplands, as well as in the Ozark and Ouachita highlands west of the Mississippi River. Records extend through parts of states including Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina; distribution within these states is often localized.
Large river valleys, unsuitable lowlands, and warmer or drier landscapes separate some populations. Published range boundaries can also differ because the southern red-backed salamander was historically treated as closely associated with, or a subspecies of, the eastern red-backed salamander. Near suspected contact zones, a photograph alone may not resolve identity.

Habitat
Southern red-backed salamanders inhabit deciduous, mixed, and occasionally pine-influenced forests where the ground retains moisture. They are associated with leaf litter, decaying logs, loose bark, mossy stones, shaded rock crevices, and small underground spaces. Ravines, wooded slopes, bluff systems, and mature forests with abundant woody debris can provide favorable conditions.
They do not require a pond or permanent stream for breeding. Nevertheless, they depend on moist terrestrial microhabitats because their skin must remain damp enough for gas exchange. Surface activity declines during drought, extreme heat, or freezing weather as individuals retreat deeper into soil, rock fissures, or rotting wood.
Behavior
This is primarily a secretive, ground-level salamander. It emerges into leaf litter and onto low surfaces during humid nights, especially following rain. In suitable weather,r it may also be found by carefully turning natural cover. Seasonal activity varies with elevation and latitude; cool spring and autumn conditions are often productive, while summer activity may be largely nocturnal or subterranean.
Individuals occupy small home areas and use chemical cues to recognize surroundings, potential mates, and competitors. Territorial behavior is documented broadly among woodland Plethodon, but its intensity can vary with food, shelter, population density, and season.
When threatened, a salamander may freeze, flee into litter, coil its body, or release the tail. A detached tail can continue moving and distract a predator. The tail can regenerate, but replacement requires energy and may reduce stored reserves.
Diet and Hunting
Southern red-backed salamanders eat small invertebrates found in litter and soil. Likely prey includes mites, springtails, tiny beetles and their larvae, ants, flies, small spiders, worms, and other appropriately sized animals. Diet changes with prey availability and the salamander’s body size.
Hunting usually involves slow searching followed by a rapid strike. Plethodontid salamanders can project the tongue to capture small prey. Their feeding helps move energy through the forest-floor food web, and abundant populations may consume substantial numbers of minute litter invertebrates.

Vocalizations
No regular field call comparable to a frog’s advertisement call is known. Southern red-backed salamanders are effectively silent during ordinary observation. Communication relies more heavily on chemical signals, touch, posture, and courtship movements than on airborne sound. Any faint squeak reported from a handled salamander should be treated as an occasional distress response rather than a species-identifying vocalization.
Breeding and Nesting
Courtship generally takes place on land, often beneath cover. Timing varies geographically and may include late summer, autumn, or other cool, moist periods. As in related Plethodon, courtship includes close contact and chemical signaling. The male deposits a spermatophore, a small sperm-bearing packet, which the female picks up with her cloaca.
Eggs are placed in a protected terrestrial chamber rather than in open water. Likely sites include cavities in decaying logs, spaces beneath bark or rocks, and underground crevices. Nests are difficult to find without disturbing habitat. A female typically remains with the clutch, helping protect it from some predators and fungal growth while maintaining contact with the eggs.
Reproduction
Clutches are small, commonly consisting of several to roughly a dozen eggs, although counts vary. Eggs are suspended in a compact cluster within a humid nest chamber. Development takes several weeks and is affected by temperature and moisture.
The species undergoes direct development. Embryos complete the aquatic-looking larval stages inside the egg and hatch as tiny terrestrial salamanders with four limbs. There is no free-swimming tadpole or stream-dwelling larva. This reproductive strategy allows populations to occupy forests away from surface water, but successful nesting still depends on stable, humid refuges.
Growth is gradual, and maturity takes more than one season. Females may not reproduce every year where producing and guarding eggs imposes high energy costs, although schedules can differ among environments and populations.
Similar Species
Eastern red-backed salamander: Plethodon cinereus is extremely similar in size, pattern, and color forms. Geography is usually the most practical separator. In areas where distributions overlap, confident identification may require locality records or expert examination; stripe shape alone is unreliable.
Zigzag salamanders: Species in the Plethodon dorsalis group may show a red or orange dorsal stripe with strongly wavy or zigzagging edges. Their proportions, ventral pattern, and local range can help, but variable individuals deserve cautious treatment.
Slimy salamander complex: These salamanders are generally larger, darker, and more heavily marked with white or silvery spots. When handled, they can produce conspicuously sticky skin secretions. Young individuals may still be confused.
Other small woodland salamanders: Several regional Plethodon have dark bodies, reddish markings, or limited ranges. Consult a current state guide and record both dorsal and ventral views when identification is uncertain.
Conservation
The southern red-backed salamander is commonly assessed as Least Concern globally, reflecting its broad distribution and many established populations. That designation does not mean every local population is secure. Forest clearing, severe fragmentation, soil compaction, repeated removal of woody debris, intensive fire, prolonged drought, and chemical contamination can reduce suitable microhabitat.
Because lungless salamanders exchange gases through permeable skin, they are sensitive to moisture loss and direct pollutant exposure. Retaining shaded forest, deep leaf litter, fallen logs, and natural rock cover supports both salamanders and their invertebrate prey. Climate-driven changes in temperature and rainfall may alter surface activity and the availability of humid refuges, although effects will differ among regions.
Field Identification Tips
- Search in appropriate weather. Cool, damp conditions after rain are more productive than hot or windy afternoons.
- Look under natural cover carefully. Lift only small, loose objects and return each exactly as found. Do not tear apart rotting logs.
- Note both color forms. A missing red stripe does not rule out this species.
- Photograph diagnostic context. Record dorsal, side, and underside patterns, overall proportions, habitat, and exact locality where appropriate.
- Use range cautiously. Distribution is highly informative, but range-map edges are approximate and historical taxonomy can complicate records.
- Avoid prolonged handling. Clean, damp hands are preferable if movement is necessary. Do not use insect repellent, sunscreen-covered hands, or dry gloves.
- Do not collect or relocate animals. Return a salamander to the precise cover object and side where it was found.
