The smooth softshell occurs primarily in the central and south-central United States. Its distribution is centered on the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Arkansas, Red, and related river systems, extending through parts of the upper Midwest and Great Plains and southward toward Texas and the Gulf Coast.
