Introduction

The sidewinder (Crotalus cerastes) is a small rattlesnake of the Mojave and Sonoran deserts in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Size

Most adult sidewinders measure about 17–30 inches (43–76 cm) in total length. Exceptionally large individuals approach 32 inches (about 81 cm), with females usually accounting for the largest specimens. Males tend to remain shorter and more slender.

This is among the smaller North American rattlesnakes. Its short length can be misleading in the field because a coiled or partly buried animal may appear even smaller.

Color and Pattern

Background color varies with local soils and may be cream, pale yellow, buff, tan, gray, salmon, pinkish brown, or light reddish brown. A series of darker, roughly oval or angular blotches runs down the back. Smaller spots or bars occur along the sides, often creating an alternating pattern.

Geographic Range

The sidewinder occurs in arid southwestern North America. In the United States, its range includes southeastern California, southern Nevada, extreme southwestern Utah, and western and southern Arizona. Major occupied regions include the Mojave Desert, Colorado Desert, lower Colorado River valley, and western portions of the Sonoran Desert.

In Mexico, it occurs in northeastern Baja California and northwestern Sonora. Its distribution is not continuous across every desert landscape; unsuitable mountains, rocky areas, developed land, and other barriers divide populations. Three regional subspecies have traditionally been recognized, although modern authorities may treat subspecies boundaries and their taxonomic value differently.

Habitat

Sidewinders favor hot, dry terrain with loose material that permits both sidewinding and shallow burial. Typical settings include windblown dunes, sandy flats, desert washes, alluvial fans, sparsely vegetated scrub, and fine gravel or sandy slopes. Creosote bush, bursage, mesquite, and other low desert vegetation may provide shade and ambush sites.

The species is mainly associated with low desert, although local populations extend into moderately elevated desert valleys and foothills. Individuals shelter beneath shrubs, in rodent burrows, beside debris, or within shallow depressions in sand. A buried sidewinder may leave only its eyes, horns, and part of its back exposed.

Encounters With People

People most often encounter sidewinders while walking on dunes or desert trails, driving quiet roads after dark, camping near sandy washes, or working around desert-edge buildings. Because the snake may be partly buried, hikers should use a light at night and avoid placing hands or feet where visibility is poor.

If you see one, stop at a safe distance and allow it an open escape route. Do not touch, move, corner, or pose the snake. A sidewinder does not chase people; rapid diagonal movement may carry it toward nearby cover or across a person’s line of travel. Around homes, reducing rodent shelter and avoiding accumulated debris can make encounters less likely.
