Introduction

The Rough-skinned Newt is a sturdy, mostly brown salamander of forests, ponds, and slow-moving waters in western North America. Its subdued back contrasts sharply with a yellow-to-orange underside, a warning display associated with potent skin toxins. Adults may be seen walking across damp forest floors, crossing roads during seasonal movements, or swimming in breeding ponds.

This species is often approachable and slow-moving, but it should be observed without unnecessary handling. Rough-skinned Newts can carry tetrodotoxin in their skin. The toxin is especially dangerous if a newt is swallowed, making encounters a serious concern for curious pets. Avoid touching your eyes or mouth after contact, keep children and pets at a distance, and never collect or taste a wild newt.

Quick Identification

  • Overall shape: Stocky salamander with a broad head, short limbs, and a long, laterally compressed tail.
  • Upper surface: Usually dark brown, olive-brown, or nearly black, with distinctly granular or rough skin on terrestrial adults.
  • Underside: Yellow, golden orange, or reddish orange, generally without bold dark spotting.
  • Eyes: Relatively small and dark compared with those of several related western newts.
  • Movement: Slow, deliberate walking on land; more agile swimming in water.
  • Defensive posture: May arch its body and raise its head and tail to expose the bright underside.

Appearance and Field Marks

The Rough-skinned Newt has a broad, somewhat flattened head and a cylindrical body supported by four short legs. Each forefoot has four toes, while each hind foot has five. Terrestrial adults usually look matte rather than glossy because the skin is covered with fine granules. Color varies with moisture, lighting, age, and locality, but the back is commonly chocolate brown, olive-brown, or very dark gray-brown.

The bright belly is the most useful field mark. It commonly extends from the throat along the abdomen and beneath the tail. Unlike the strongly blotched underside of some salamanders, it is usually plain or only lightly marked. A clear view of the belly is seldom necessary, however; observers should not turn over or restrain an animal to confirm identification.

Newts in the water may appear smoother and darker than terrestrial individuals. Breeding males commonly develop a taller, more finlike tail, smoother skin, enlarged hind limbs, dark nuptial pads on the toes, and a swollen cloacal area. Females generally retain a rounder body and more granular texture, although these differences are easiest to judge in breeding adults seen together.

Size and Measurements

Adults are typically about 11–22 cm (4.3–8.7 in) in total length, including the tail. Many encountered animals fall near the middle of that range. The tail often accounts for close to half of the total length, although proportions vary with age, sex, breeding condition, and injury.

Body mass is less useful for field identification because it changes with size, hydration, season, and whether a female is carrying eggs. Adults often weigh roughly 10–30 g (0.35–1.1 oz), but individuals can fall outside that range. Do not handle or weigh a newt solely to obtain a measurement.

Range and Distribution

Rough-skinned Newts occupy the Pacific margin of North America. Their broad distribution extends from southeastern Alaska through coastal British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon into northern and central California. They occur west of the major mountain crests through much of the range, with some populations farther inland and on offshore islands.

Distribution is not continuous in every region. Local occurrence depends on suitable breeding water, damp terrestrial refuges, and connections between aquatic and upland habitat. Elevation ranges from near sea level into mountain landscapes, although severe winters and dry environments limit where persistent populations can survive. Habitat

This newt is strongly associated with moist temperate environments. On land, it inhabits coniferous forest, mixed woodland, alder thickets, wet meadows, and shaded riparian corridors. Fallen logs, bark slabs, leaf litter, root cavities, and small mammal burrows provide shelter from drying conditions and temperature extremes.

Breeding takes place in ponds, marshes, lake margins, reservoirs, ditches, and quiet sections of streams. Sites generally contain submerged vegetation, woody debris, or other surfaces for egg attachment. Some populations use permanent water, while others breed in seasonal wetlands that remain flooded long enough for larvae to develop.

Behavior

Adults may spend much of the year hidden underground or beneath cover. They become conspicuous during mild, wet weather, especially when moving between upland refuges and breeding water. Seasonal migrations sometimes carry newts across roads, where slow movement makes them vulnerable to vehicles.

When threatened, a newt may remain still, curl its tail, raise its head, or arch into a posture that displays the warning-colored underside. It can also release skin secretions. This defense discourages many predators, although some garter snake populations have evolved substantial resistance to the toxin.

Activity may occur by day in cool, wet conditions, but overland movements are often concentrated at night or during rain. Aquatic adults alternate between resting on the bottom, surfacing for air, and swimming with side-to-side movements of the body and tail.

Diet and Hunting

Rough-skinned Newts are opportunistic carnivores. Terrestrial adults consume earthworms, small slugs, snails, insects, spiders, and other invertebrates they can overpower. In water, they take aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, amphibian eggs, and other small animal prey. Cannibalism may occur, particularly when smaller larvae or eggs are available.

Hunting is generally slow and close-range. On land, a newt approaches and seizes prey with its mouth rather than pursuing it at speed. Aquatic individuals can use rapid mouth opening and suction to draw in small prey. Larvae feed on zooplankton and progressively larger aquatic invertebrates as they grow.

Vocalizations

Rough-skinned Newts do not produce the advertisement calls familiar from frogs and toads. Courtship depends primarily on movement, touch, and chemical cues rather than long-distance sound. A restrained or disturbed individual may occasionally make a faint squeak or other brief noise, but vocalization is not a practical identification feature.

Breeding and Nesting

Breeding timing varies considerably across the range. Adults may enter water during winter or early spring in mild coastal areas, while mountain and northern populations generally breed later. Some adults remain aquatic for an extended season.

A male locates a female using visual and chemical cues, then clasps her in amplexus. Courtship may include tail movements and prolonged contact. Fertilization is internal: the male deposits a spermatophore, which the female takes into her cloaca. Newts do not construct a nest. Instead, the female attaches eggs individually to aquatic plants, submerged twigs, or other protected surfaces, sometimes folding vegetation around them.

Reproduction

A female may deposit numerous eggs over days or weeks rather than laying one compact mass. Egg number varies with female size, condition, and population. Each egg is enclosed in a gelatinous capsule that absorbs water after deposition.

Embryonic development usually takes several weeks, depending strongly on water temperature. Newly hatched larvae have external gills, a tail fin, and slender bodies. They remain aquatic, feeding and growing through spring and summer. Metamorphosis commonly occurs later in the season, but larvae in cool or permanent waters may overwinter before transforming.

After metamorphosis, juveniles leave the water and may spend several years in terrestrial habitat before returning to breed. Survival and age at maturity vary among populations, particularly across the species’ wide climatic range.

Similar Species

California Newt: The California Newt is generally smoother-skinned, with somewhat larger or more prominent eyes and a paler lower eyelid. Its underside is also yellow to orange, so texture and facial details are useful where ranges approach or overlap. Aquatic Rough-skinned Newts can become smoother, making identification more difficult.

Sierra Newt: This close relative occurs mainly in California’s Sierra Nevada and adjacent areas. It typically has smoother skin and lighter-looking eyes than a Rough-skinned Newt. Location is helpful but should not replace examination of visible field marks.

Red-bellied Newt: This localized northern California species has a darker, smoother-looking back and a distinctly red underside rather than the more yellow-orange belly typical of many Rough-skinned Newts. Its dark eyes may resemble those of the Rough-skinned Newt.

Northwestern Salamander: Northwestern Salamanders are usually more robust, lack the newt’s plain bright-orange underside, and often show conspicuous parotoid glands behind the eyes. Their tail is less strongly finned outside the breeding environment.

Conservation

The Rough-skinned Newt is commonly assessed as Least Concern across its broad range. Nevertheless, local populations can decline when breeding wetlands are drained, upland forest cover is removed, or migration routes are fragmented. Road mortality may be severe where many adults cross a roadway during a few rainy nights.

Introduced fish can consume eggs and larvae, while disease, pollution, drought, severe wildfire, and altered water levels may reduce reproductive success. Conservation is most effective when it protects both breeding water and the surrounding terrestrial habitat. Maintaining woody cover, natural shoreline vegetation, and safe movement corridors benefits newts and many other wetland-dependent animals.

Field Identification Tips

  • Look for a dark brown, granular back and an unspotted yellow-orange belly.
  • Note the relatively small, dark eyes and broad head, but avoid relying on one feature alone.
  • Expect smoother skin and a taller tail fin in aquatic breeding males.
  • Use geographic location and habitat to narrow the possibilities, especially in California where several Taricha species occur.
  • Observe from above or the side rather than picking up the animal to inspect its underside.
  • During rainy road crossings, pull over only where it is legal and completely safe. Do not create a traffic hazard.
  • Keep dogs and cats away. Mouthing or swallowing a newt can cause life-threatening poisoning and requires urgent veterinary attention.

Interesting Facts

  • The species’ skin can contain tetrodotoxin, the same class of potent neurotoxin associated with pufferfish and several other unrelated animals.
  • Some populations of common garter snakes have evolved toxin resistance, producing a well-studied evolutionary interaction between predator and prey.
  • The bright underside functions as warning coloration. A threatened newt may deliberately expose it while keeping much of its body otherwise motionless.
  • Adults move between aquatic breeding sites and forested terrestrial habitat, so protecting a pond alone may not preserve a population.
  • Despite the name, aquatic individuals can look relatively smooth. Skin texture is most obvious in terrestrial adults.
  • A Rough-skinned Newt is a salamander, not a lizard. It has moist glandular skin, no scales or claws, and an aquatic larval stage.
