The Red-spotted Toad (Anaxyrus punctatus) is a small, attractively marked toad of dry western North America. It is most closely associated with rocky canyons, desert springs, arroyos, and stream corridors, where crevices provide shelter and temporary pools offer breeding sites. Its scattered red or orange skin tubercles give the species its common name.

Although the toad may appear delicate, it is well adapted to hot, dry landscapes. Adults remain hidden during unfavorable conditions and emerge at night or after rain. Identification is usually straightforward when you can see the combination of small size, flattened build, round parotoid glands, weak cranial crests, and reddish spots.

Quick Identification

Appearance and Field Marks

A Red-spotted Toad has dry-looking, granular skin covered with many small warts or tubercles. The most useful field mark is the reddish color concentrated on these raised bumps. Depending on the individual and lighting, the spots may look bright red, rusty orange, muted brick red, or dark reddish brown. They can be less obvious on wet animals or under a flashlight.

The background color varies considerably and often matches surrounding rock. Pale gray and tan individuals are common, while others are olive, pinkish, or brown. Dark speckling or irregular mottling may occur, but the species usually lacks the bold paired blotches seen on some larger western toads.

The head is broad but not strongly armored. Prominent bony ridges between or behind the eyes are generally lacking. Behind each eye is a relatively small, rounded parotoid gland. These glands distinguish the toad from frogs and can release defensive secretions when the animal is severely stressed or handled by a predator.

The belly is usually pale and comparatively unmarked. Breeding males may develop a dusky or darkened throat, while females generally retain a paler throat. The eye has a horizontal pupil and a coppery or golden iris.

Size and Measurements

Most Red-spotted Toad adults measure approximately 1.5–3 inches (3.8–7.6 cm) in snout-to-vent length. Females tend to average larger and more robust than males, but size alone is not a dependable way to determine sex. Recently transformed juveniles are much smaller and may have proportionally less conspicuous red spotting.

Field measurements should use snout-to-vent length rather than total length because an adult toad has no tail. Avoid unnecessary stretching or restraint. Photographs taken beside a ruler, without pressing the toad into position, are often sufficient for documentation.

Range and Distribution

The Red-spotted Toad occurs across portions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. Its U.S. distribution includes parts of southeastern California, southern Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, western Texas, and adjoining areas of the southern Great Plains. In Mexico, it occurs through portions of Baja California and the northern and central mainland, although records are uneven and suitable habitat is often highly localized.

Within this broad range, the species is not distributed uniformly. Populations frequently follow rocky drainage systems, springs, canyon bottoms, and river corridors. Large expanses of apparently suitable desert may separate occupied sites. Local presence can also be difficult to detect outside the breeding season, when adults remain concealed.

Habitat

Rocky terrain near dependable or seasonally available water is the characteristic habitat. Red-spotted Toads inhabit desert and semidesert canyons, rocky arroyos, spring runs, stream margins, pools in bedrock, and the edges of rivers. They may also use human-made water sources when shelter and suitable water quality are available.

Crevices, spaces beneath rocks, banks, and other protected retreats help the toads avoid daytime heat and water loss. Breeding water may be permanent or temporary, but it must remain long enough for eggs and tadpoles to develop. Flash floods can create new pools while simultaneously washing away eggs or larvae, making reproductive success variable from year to year.

Behavior

Red-spotted Toads are primarily nocturnal. During daylight, they usually shelter in rock cracks, beneath stones, or in other cool recesses. Individuals emerge after dark to forage along damp rock, stream margins, and shallow pools. Activity often increases during warm rain or when seasonal flows return to otherwise dry channels.

Rather than relying only on long-distance hopping, the species often moves in short hops or walks over rocks. Its relatively flattened body allows it to enter narrow crevices. As with other amphibians, the skin is permeable, and the toad can take up water through a specialized pelvic area on the underside of the body.

When threatened, a toad may crouch, remain motionless, inflate its body, or release defensive skin secretions. These secretions can irritate eyes and mucous membranes. Observers should avoid unnecessary handling and wash their hands after contact.

Diet and Hunting

Red-spotted Toad adults eat a variety of small invertebrates, including ants, beetles, flies, moths, spiders, and other arthropods that can be captured on the ground. The exact mixture varies with location, season, and prey availability.

A foraging toad commonly waits until prey moves within range, then captures it with a rapid extension of the sticky tongue. It may also make short advances toward active insects. Artificial lights near desert buildings can concentrate insects and occasionally attract toads, though roads, pets, and chemical exposure may make such sites hazardous.

Tadpoles feed differently from adults. They graze on algae, microorganisms, and organic material on submerged surfaces and in bottom sediments.

Vocalizations

The Red-spotted Toad male’s advertisement call is a high, musical trill. It may continue for several seconds and can be repeated at intervals from the edge of a pool or while the male floats in shallow water. A chorus can sound surprisingly loud in an enclosed canyon, where rock walls reflect the calls.

Call speed, pitch, and duration vary with temperature and the caller’s condition. The voice is generally higher and more delicate than the harsher calls of several larger toads. Because multiple amphibian species may breed at the same pool, a visual confirmation is preferable when documenting a new locality.

Breeding and Nesting

Breeding timing varies across the range. Activity may begin in spring at some sites, while desert populations often respond to warm-season rainfall. Males gather at pools, stream edges, spring-fed shallows, and temporary water in rocky channels. Calling can begin soon after suitable water appears.

Like other toads, the Red-spotted Toad does not construct a nest or provide a defended nesting territory. A male clasps a female behind the forelimbs in amplexus while she releases eggs into the water. The male fertilizes them externally. Red-spotted Toad eggs are typically deposited individually rather than in the conspicuous long strings produced by many other North American toads. Eggs may adhere to vegetation, rocks, or debris below the surface.

Reproduction

Embryonic and larval development is strongly influenced by water temperature, food, crowding, and how long a pool persists. The eggs hatch into small, dark tadpoles that occupy shallow water and graze on submerged surfaces. Development to metamorphosis commonly takes several weeks, but timing should not be assumed to be identical at every site.

As metamorphosis approaches, hind legs appear first, followed by the forelimbs. The tail is gradually absorbed, and the young toadlets begin leaving the water. Newly transformed animals often gather along damp margins before dispersing into nearby rocky shelter. Mortality can be high if pools dry too quickly, flood violently, or contain introduced predators.

Similar Species

Western Toad: Usually larger and more heavily built, with elongated parotoid glands and a pale stripe down the center of the back in many adults. It generally lacks the Red-spotted Toad’s numerous rust-colored tubercles.

Woodhouse’s Toad: Larger, with conspicuous cranial crests and elongated parotoid glands. Its back often carries darker blotches containing several warts rather than small red spots scattered over a relatively plain background.

Great Plains Toad: A robust, strongly patterned toad with large paired dark blotches edged in pale color. Its cranial crests are much more evident.

Sonoran Green Toad: Usually shows distinct greenish patches or reticulation on a darker background. Range overlap is limited, and the pattern is typically bolder than the subtle mottling of a Red-spotted Toad.

Canyon Treefrog: May share rocky canyon pools and can be gray or olive. It has smoother skin, expanded toe pads, no parotoid glands, and a more frog-like build adapted for clinging to rock.

Conservation

The Red-spotted Toad remains widespread, but individual populations can be vulnerable because breeding is concentrated around limited water sources. Groundwater withdrawal, spring modification, prolonged drought, altered flood patterns, pollution, disease, and introduced fish or bullfrogs may reduce local habitat quality. Road traffic can also kill adults moving to and from breeding sites.

Protecting natural flow patterns, water quality, rocky shoreline cover, and connections among breeding sites is important. Visitors can help by avoiding sunscreen, soap, insect repellent, and other contaminants in small desert pools. Do not move amphibians between watersheds because apparently healthy animals can carry pathogens or disrupt local populations.

Field Identification Tips

  • Look after dark along rocky watercourses, especially following warm rain.
  • Use a low-intensity light and approach slowly; bright lights may interrupt calling or foraging.
  • Confirm several traits: small size, flattened body, red-tipped tubercles, rounded parotoid glands, and weak cranial crests.
  • Photograph the back, side of the head, and belly when possible without prolonged handling.
  • Do not identify solely by background color, which changes with the substrate, moisture, and lighting.
  • Listen for a sustained, high trill, but check for other calling species at the same pool.
  • Leave rocks, eggs, tadpoles, and adults where found. Replacing shelter rocks incorrectly can crush hidden wildlife.
