Queen Anne’s lace (Daucus carota) is a familiar roadside wildflower with broad, white flower clusters, finely divided leaves, and a distinctive seed head that curls inward like a small bird’s nest. Also called wild carrot, it is the wild form of the species from which cultivated carrots were developed.
Although attractive and useful to many insects, Queen Anne’s lace is not native to North America. It arrived from Eurasia and has become naturalized across much of the continent. Accurate identification is especially important because several members of the carrot family are dangerously poisonous. No plant in this family should be eaten based only on its white, umbrella-shaped flowers.

Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is the most important look-alike. It usually has smooth, hollow stems marked with irregular purple or reddish blotches. It can also grow much taller than Queen Anne’s lace. Queen Anne’s lace normally has solid, hairy green stems and conspicuous divided bracts beneath the umbel. Poison hemlock is potentially fatal if ingested.
Water hemlocks (Cicuta species) are extremely poisonous wetland plants. They usually grow in marshes, wet meadows, ditches, and along streams. Their leaves are divided into broader, sharply toothed leaflets rather than the fine, fernlike segments of Queen Anne’s lace.
Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) has yellow umbels and broader, toothed leaflets. Its sap can cause severe skin reactions after exposure to sunlight.
Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) may look similar from a distance, but it belongs to the aster family. Its flower head is composed of many small daisy-like units rather than true umbels, and it lacks the forked bracts beneath a Queen Anne’s lace flower cluster.
American wild carrot (Daucus pusillus), a North American native, is generally smaller and has less expansive umbels. Distinguishing related Daucus species may require close examination of fruits, bracts, and other technical characters.
Wildlife Connections
The open flower clusters provide accessible nectar and pollen for small bees, flies, beetles, wasps, and other insects. Black swallowtail caterpillars may use the foliage as a host plant, as they do other members of the carrot family. Insects visiting the flowers can in turn become food for predatory arthropods and birds.

Is It Edible or Toxic?
Properly identified young roots of Daucus carota have been eaten, but they quickly become woody and are not equivalent to a garden carrot. The overriding concern is misidentification with poison hemlock or water hemlock. Both can cause life-threatening poisoning, and superficial resemblance within the carrot family makes casual foraging unsafe.
Do not taste a plant to identify it, and do not rely only on smell, flower color, or one field mark.
