The pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius) is a small venomous pit viper native to the southeastern United States. Its range extends from North Carolina through Florida and west to eastern Texas and Oklahoma, with northern populations reaching parts of Missouri, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It is best known for its compact body, dark dorsal blotches, rust-colored back stripe, and extremely small rattle.

Geographic Range
The species is restricted to the United States. It occurs across much of the Southeast, generally from North Carolina south through South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, then west through the Gulf Coast states to eastern Texas. Its distribution extends inland into parts of Arkansas, southeastern Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Habitat
Pygmy rattlesnakes occupy varied lowland and upland habitats. Typical settings include pine flatwoods, longleaf pine and wiregrass communities, palmetto scrub, sandhills, mixed woodland, wet prairie, marsh edges, floodplains, cypress swamps, and the margins of ponds or lakes. Western populations also use rocky woodland and open glades.
They are frequently associated with ground cover, leaf litter, fallen branches, grass clumps, palmetto, and low shrubs. Shelter may be found beneath logs, in stump holes, within small-mammal burrows, or in abandoned gopher tortoise burrows. Although often connected with damp landscapes, the species also inhabits well-drained sandy sites when adequate cover and prey are present.
Behavior and Activity
This is primarily a terrestrial snake, but it can swim and may climb low vegetation. Much of its time is spent resting in cover or waiting beside prey trails. Its small size and mottled coloration make it difficult to detect among leaves, pine needles, gravel, or grass.
Activity varies with temperature and season. Pygmy rattlesnakes may be active by day during mild weather and become crepuscular or nocturnal during hot summer periods. Watch where your hands and feet go, wear closed footwear in dense cover, keep pets leashed, and use a light outdoors after dark. If you see a snake, stop, step away slowly, and give it an escape route. Never pick up a small rattlesnake; juveniles can still bite.
