The prairie rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis) is a venomous pit viper of the Great Plains and adjacent dry regions of western North America. Its range extends from southern Canada through the central and western United States into northern Mexico. It is best known for its segmented rattle, broad head, heat-sensing facial pits, and a row of dark dorsal blotches on a gray, tan, brown, olive, or greenish background.
This adaptable rattlesnake occupies grasslands, sagebrush country, open shrublands, badlands, and rocky breaks. Although potentially dangerous, it generally relies on camouflage and avoidance. Rattling is a defensive warning, not evidence that the snake is preparing to pursue or attack a person.

Appearance and Identification
The prairie rattlesnake has a robust, though not exceptionally massive, body. The neck is visibly narrower than the head, while the body tapers toward a short tail. Strongly keeled dorsal scales create a textured appearance. The belly is usually cream, pale gray, or yellowish and may carry scattered darker marks.
The head is broad behind the eyes and relatively flat on top. Numerous small scales cover much of its upper surface. A dark stripe often runs from the eye toward the rear corner of the jaw, bordered by lighter coloring. The eyes have vertical pupils, although pupil shape may be difficult to see in dim light or from a safe viewing distance. A loreal pit lies between the eye and nostril on each side; these heat-sensitive organs help the snake locate warm-blooded prey.
The tail bears contrasting rings followed by a keratinous rattle. Each time the snake sheds, it may add a new segment, but segments routinely break off. The number of segments therefore cannot reveal the snake’s age. Newborns have a single terminal button and cannot produce the sustained buzzing sound of a larger rattle.
Males and females are similar in color and pattern. Adult males tend to have proportionally longer tails and often reach greater total lengths, but these differences are not practical field marks.

Size
Most adults measure about 3–4 feet (91–122 cm). Many are smaller, particularly in cool or prey-poor environments. Large individuals may approach 5 feet (152 cm), although snakes of that size are uncommon. Adult males generally average longer than females in populations where size differences have been studied.
Color and Pattern
Ground color varies with soil, rock, vegetation, and individual variation. Prairie rattlesnakes may be pale gray, buff, yellowish tan, brown, olive, or muted green. A series of dark brown, gray-brown, or reddish-brown blotches runs across the back. These usually have narrow cream or pale borders and darker outer edges.
The blotches are broadest along the middle of the body and commonly narrow into crossbands closer to the tail. Smaller spots occur along the sides. The tail typically shows alternating dark and pale rings, but the contrast varies and should not be confused with the sharply black-and-white tail bands of some southwestern rattlesnakes.
Young snakes generally resemble adults, though their patterns may look sharper and more contrasting. Older individuals can become darker or less distinctly marked. A recently shed snake normally appears brighter than one approaching a shed, when the skin and eyes may look dull or cloudy.
Similar Species
The western rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) closely resembles the prairie rattlesnake. Geographic location is often more useful than any single visible mark because coloration overlaps and taxonomic boundaries have changed. Western rattlesnakes occur mainly farther west, while prairie rattlesnakes are associated chiefly with the Great Plains and areas immediately east of the Rocky Mountains.
The western diamond-backed rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) may occur near the prairie rattlesnake’s southwestern range. It usually has a more obvious diamond pattern and strongly contrasting black-and-white tail rings. The massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus) is generally smaller, has a proportionally smaller rattle, and favors prairie wetlands or seasonally moist grasslands in much of its range.
Bullsnakes and gophersnakes (Pituophis catenifer) are frequently mistaken for rattlesnakes because they have dark blotches, may hiss, and can vibrate the tail. They lack a true segmented rattle and have a more gradually tapered tail and narrower head. However, no one should approach or handle a snake to inspect these features. A broken rattle or concealed tail can make identification uncertain; when in doubt, give the animal the same space afforded to a rattlesnake.
Geographic Range
The species occupies a broad interior North American range. In Canada, it occurs in parts of southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. In the United States, it is distributed across much of the northern and central Great Plains and adjoining Rocky Mountain basins, including portions of Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas, with more limited occurrence in neighboring western states. Its range continues into northern Mexico.
Distribution is not continuous within every listed region. Intensive agriculture, urban development, high mountains, and unsuitable moist or forested landscapes create gaps. Boundaries shown by different sources may also vary because western rattlesnake taxonomy has been revised.

Habitat
Prairie rattlesnakes favor open, relatively dry country. Typical habitats include shortgrass and mixed-grass prairie, sagebrush steppe, open shrubland, badlands, rocky hillsides, canyon rims, and sparsely wooded foothills. They occur from low plains to mountain valleys and uplands, sometimes above 8,000 feet (2,440 m) where local climate and winter shelter are suitable.
Rock crevices, mammal burrows, eroded banks, debris, and dense vegetation provide daytime cover and refuge from temperature extremes. In northern areas, secure underground dens must remain above freezing through winter. Suitable dens may occur in fractured rock, talus, abandoned mammal burrows, or deep fissures on sun-exposed slopes.
Behavior and Activity
Activity changes with temperature. During mild spring and autumn weather, prairie rattlesnakes may bask and travel by day. In summer, they become more crepuscular or nocturnal, especially where afternoon temperatures are high. They often spend long periods concealed beside rodent trails or burrow entrances.
The species moves mainly on the ground but can climb low shrubs or rocks and can swim when necessary. It does not dig substantial burrows; instead, it uses existing animal burrows and natural openings. Individuals may travel between feeding areas, summer shelters, and communal winter dens.
When approached, a prairie rattlesnake may remain still, retreat, coil, or rattle. Striking is generally a close-range defensive action. Not every snake rattles, and repeated disturbance can increase rather than reduce defensive behavior.
Diet and Hunting
Small mammals form most of the diet. Common prey includes mice, voles, ground squirrels, prairie dogs, young rabbits, and other appropriately sized rodents. Birds, nestlings, lizards, and occasionally amphibians may also be eaten, with juveniles taking a greater proportion of small lizards and young rodents.
The snake is primarily an ambush predator. It waits near an active runway or burrow, strikes rapidly, and injects venom through hinged hollow fangs. A bitten mammal may be released, reducing the risk that struggling prey will injure the snake. The rattlesnake then follows chemical cues to locate and swallow it. It does not constrict prey.

Reproduction and Life Cycle
Mating may occur in late summer or early autumn and sometimes in spring after emergence. Females can store sperm, allowing fertilization to occur well after mating. The species is viviparous: embryos develop within the female, and she gives birth to live young rather than laying shelled eggs.
Birth usually occurs from late summer into early autumn. Litters commonly contain about 4–12 young, although numbers vary with the female’s size, condition, and location. Newborns are roughly 9–12 inches (23–30 cm) long and are venomous from birth. They may remain near the birth site briefly before dispersing.
Females in cooler northern environments may reproduce only every second or third year because gestation and recovery require substantial energy. Maturity generally takes several years. Wild individuals can survive well over a decade, and lifespans approaching 20 years are plausible for snakes that avoid predators, roads, and persecution. Seasonal Activity
Northern populations spend winter in brumation below the frost line. Multiple prairie rattlesnakes may share a den, sometimes alongside other snake species. Emergence generally occurs in spring as ground temperatures rise. Snakes initially bask near the den before dispersing toward summer feeding areas.
Spring brings daytime basking and movement. Hot summer conditions shift much activity toward dusk, night, and early morning. Pregnant females may remain near favorable basking and shelter sites. In autumn, snakes return toward traditional winter dens, sometimes traveling considerable distances and reusing similar routes annually. The active season is longer in the southern part of the range.
Venom and Medical Significance
Prairie rattlesnake venom subdues prey and begins tissue digestion. Its effects are primarily associated with tissue damage, swelling, pain, and disruption of blood or clotting processes, although venom composition and bite severity vary. The snake delivers venom through two movable fangs at the front of the upper jaw. A bite may inject little or no venom, but this cannot be determined safely outside medical care.
Any suspected bite is a medical emergency. Move away from the snake, keep the affected person calm and as still as practical, remove constricting jewelry, and contact emergency medical services or a poison center promptly. Do not cut or suction the wound, apply ice, or use a tourniquet. Do not attempt to capture the snake; a photograph taken from a safe distance may help document the encounter, but do not delay identification or treatment.
Predators and Threats
Natural predators include hawks, eagles, owls, coyotes, foxes, badgers, skunks, and larger snakes. Young rattlesnakes are especially vulnerable. Defensive camouflage and concealment reduce exposure, while venom is used mainly to subdue prey and for immediate defense.
Major human-related threats include road mortality, deliberate killing, loss or fragmentation of grassland and shrubland, destruction of den sites, and commercial or recreational collection. Communal dens can be particularly vulnerable because many snakes concentrate in a small area and return repeatedly.

Encounters With People
People most often encounter prairie rattlesnakes on warm trails, rocky slopes, ranch roads, around prairie-dog colonies, or near outbuildings where rodents provide food. At night, snakes may rest on pavement that retains heat. Hikers should watch where they place hands and feet, step onto rather than blindly over logs or rocks, and use a light after dark.
If you see a snake, stop and give it ample room to retreat. Keep children and pets close, and never prod, corner, or attempt to relocate it. Most bites occur when a snake is intentionally handled or disturbed. Rattlesnakes do not chase people; a snake moving in someone’s direction is usually seeking cover or following its own travel route.
Conservation Status
The prairie rattlesnake is commonly assessed as Least Concern globally because it has a broad range and remains widespread. That status does not mean every population is secure. Habitat conversion, den destruction, roads, and persecution can produce serious local declines.
Legal status and collection rules differ among states, provinces, parks, and tribal lands. Some jurisdictions protect rattlesnakes generally or prohibit disturbance at dens, while others permit regulated take. Follow local wildlife regulations and leave snakes and den sites undisturbed.
