Introduction

The pickerel frog (Lithobates palustris) is a slender, spotted frog of cool wetlands, spring-fed streams, pond margins, and damp woodlands across much of eastern North America. Its orderly rows of dark, rectangular spots and the yellow or orange color hidden along its inner thighs are the most useful field marks.

This species is often mistaken for a northern or southern leopard frog. A careful look at spot shape, spot arrangement, and the color of the concealed hind legs usually resolves the identification. Some references retain the older scientific name Rana palustris, so both names may appear in field guides and databases. Quick Identification

  • Shape: Medium-sized, slim-bodied frog with long hind legs and a pointed to moderately rounded snout.
  • Back: Tan, gray-brown, bronze, or greenish brown.
  • Spots: Two usually orderly rows of dark brown, squarish or rectangular blotches between the dorsolateral folds.

Appearance and Field Marks

A typical pickerel frog has smooth to slightly granular skin and a light brown or bronze ground color. The back is bordered by a pair of prominent dorsolateral folds. Between these folds are dark blotches with pale borders. The blotches tend to be angular and arranged in two parallel rows, although individual patterns vary.

A dark mask may extend from the snout through the eye, and crossbars commonly mark the hind legs. The upper lip is usually pale. The concealed surfaces of the thighs and groin are washed with yellow, golden yellow, or orange. This color may be difficult to see on a resting animal, so observers should watch the hind legs as the frog moves rather than capture it solely to inspect the thighs.

Young frogs can appear brighter and more sharply patterned than older adults. Recently transformed froglets are tiny but generally show the same paired arrangement of dorsal blotches. Color alone is unreliable because temperature, moisture, lighting, and individual variation can alter the apparent shade.

Size and Measurements

Adult pickerel frogs are generally about 4.5–7.5 cm (1.8–3 inches) in snout-to-vent length. Females commonly average larger and heavier than males, especially during the breeding season. Measurements refer to the body from the tip of the snout to the vent, not to the stretched length of the hind legs.

Body size overlaps broadly with leopard frogs, so size should support—not determine—an identification. Small adults may be confused with juveniles of larger species. Males can be recognized in breeding condition by swollen thumbs and more muscular forearms, although these traits may be subtle outside close examination.

Range and Distribution

The pickerel frog is native to eastern North America. Its range extends from southeastern Canada and New England west through portions of the Great Lakes region and central United States, and south through the Appalachian region and parts of the Southeast. Distribution becomes irregular near the western and southern limits, where suitable cool, clean, well-vegetated aquatic habitats may be scattered.

It can be locally common while absent from apparently similar nearby wetlands. Elevation, water temperature, groundwater influence, wetland connectivity, and land-use history all affect its distribution. Check regional records when an observation falls near a known range boundary.

Habitat

Pickerel frogs use a mixture of aquatic and terrestrial habitats. They are associated with pond edges, marshes, sedge meadows, bog margins, slow streams, spring runs, wet pastures, and forested wetlands. Cool, clear water and abundant shoreline vegetation are common features of occupied sites, although the species is not restricted to pristine habitats.

After breeding, individuals may move into damp woods, shaded ravines, wet fields, or streamside vegetation. They often shelter beneath leaf litter, logs, rocks, or dense plants during hot or dry periods. In winter, they generally seek protected aquatic locations where oxygenated water remains available, such as pond bottoms, springs, or slow stream sections that do not freeze solid.

Behavior

Pickerel frogs are alert and quick to leap into water when approached. A disturbed frog may dive, hide beneath vegetation, or settle on the bottom. Individuals also travel overland, particularly during rainy weather, breeding movements, and seasonal dispersal.

Activity is strongly influenced by temperature and moisture. The frogs may forage by day in cool, shaded conditions but are often most active from dusk into the night during warm weather. In northern areas, they spend a substantial part of the year inactive.

The skin produces defensive secretions that may make the frog unpalatable to some predators and can irritate human eyes or broken skin. This defense does not make the species predator-proof: snakes, birds, mammals, larger frogs, fish, and aquatic invertebrates may still consume pickerel frogs or their early life stages.

Diet and Hunting

Adult pickerel frogs eat a varied diet of small invertebrates, including insects, spiders, mites, slugs, snails, and worms. The exact diet depends on prey availability and the frog’s size. Small froglets concentrate on tiny arthropods, while larger adults can take more substantial prey.

Like many true frogs, a pickerel frog commonly uses a sit-and-wait strategy. It remains still among shoreline plants or leaf litter, then lunges or flicks out its sticky tongue when prey moves within range. It may also make short foraging movements through vegetation on humid nights.

Tadpoles feed mainly by grazing and filtering. Their diet can include algae, microorganisms, pollen, decomposing plant material, and organic films on submerged surfaces. They may opportunistically consume animal material, but they are not specialized predators.

Vocalizations

The male’s advertisement call is a low, soft snore, croak, or purr, usually lasting roughly a second or two. It is less chuckling than the call of a northern leopard frog and may be surprisingly difficult to hear. Males frequently vocalize while floating low in shallow water or partly submerged, which muffles the sound.

Choruses are most likely during the spring breeding period, although timing varies with latitude, elevation, water temperature, and weather. Calling may begin soon after ice-out in northern areas. At close range, brief squeaks or release calls may also be heard during interactions between frogs.

Breeding and Nesting

Breeding generally occurs in spring, often from March into May or June depending on location. Southern populations may begin earlier, while high-elevation and northern populations breed later. Adults gather in shallow ponds, marshy pools, flooded meadows, quiet stream margins, and similar waters.

Pickerel frogs do not build a nest. During amplexus, the male clasps the female behind the forelegs while eggs are released and fertilized externally. The female deposits a rounded or globular egg mass, commonly attached to submerged stems or other vegetation below the surface. A mass may contain several hundred to a few thousand eggs, but counts vary with female size and other conditions.

Reproduction

Embryos develop within clear gelatinous capsules. Hatching time depends heavily on water temperature and may range from several days to a few weeks. Newly hatched larvae initially remain near the egg mass before becoming free-swimming tadpoles.

Pickerel frog tadpoles are generally brownish, olive, or yellow-brown, with a pale underside and scattered darker or metallic-looking flecks. These features overlap with the larvae of other frogs, so confident tadpole identification often requires close attention to mouthparts, tail pattern, habitat, season, and local species.

Larval development usually continues for several weeks to a few months. Temperature, food, crowding, and hydroperiod can substantially alter the schedule. At metamorphosis, the young frog absorbs its tail, develops functional lungs and limbs, and leaves the water as a small froglet. Sexual maturity is commonly reached after one or more additional growing seasons.

Similar Species

Northern leopard frog: Usually has rounded or oval spots scattered less evenly across the back. Its hidden thighs are typically greenish or whitish rather than distinctly yellow or orange. Leopard frog spots may be numerous, but they seldom form the pickerel frog’s neat paired rows of rectangular blotches.

Southern leopard frog: Often has a light spot on the tympanum and more rounded dorsal markings. Its overall form can be extremely similar, especially where the two species overlap. Check several traits rather than relying on a single spot.

Plains leopard frog: May have bold dorsal spots and pale folds but usually shows rounder, less regularly aligned markings. Geographic range is also useful, although overlap occurs in parts of the central United States.

Wood frog: Has a strong dark mask through the eye but lacks the orderly rectangular dorsal blotches and bright yellow-orange inner thighs. Its dorsolateral folds are less conspicuous.

Mink frog: More aquatic, often greenish, and marked with irregular spots or mottling rather than two organized rows. It may also produce a musky odor when handled.

Conservation

The pickerel frog remains widespread, but local populations can be affected by wetland drainage, shoreline development, road mortality, sedimentation, pollutants, altered stream flow, and the loss of damp upland cover around breeding sites. Because the species uses both water and surrounding land, protecting only the breeding pool may not preserve all of its seasonal habitat.

Amphibians absorb water and dissolved substances through permeable skin, making pesticide drift, road runoff, and other contaminants potential concerns. Disease, introduced predators, drought, and increasingly irregular wetland hydroperiods may add further pressure. Conservation status differs among states and provinces, particularly near range margins, so local regulations should be consulted before any handling or collection.

Field Identification Tips

  1. Look first for two organized rows of squarish dark blotches, rather than scattered round spots.
  2. Confirm the presence of long, pale dorsolateral folds along both sides of the back.
  3. Watch for yellow or orange on the inner thighs when the frog jumps.
  4. Note the habitat. Cool spring runs, wet meadows, vegetated pond margins, and damp woods are typical settings.
  5. Listen for a low, short snore during the spring breeding season.
  6. Photograph the back, side, and visible hind-leg color without restraining the animal unnecessarily.

If handling is necessary for approved survey work, use clean, wet, powder-free gloves and keep contact brief. Never apply insect repellent, sunscreen, or lotion immediately before touching an amphibian. Wash hands afterward and avoid touching the eyes or mouth.
