The patch-nosed salamander (Urspelerpes brucei) is a minute, stream-associated salamander known from a restricted area in the southern Appalachian foothills. It was formally described only in 2009, despite occurring near populated parts of northeastern Georgia. Its small size, concealed habits, and close association with wet stream margins help explain why it remained unrecognized for so long.
This is a lungless salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It absorbs oxygen through its moist skin and the lining of its mouth, making cool, humid conditions essential. Field identification is possible when an adult is examined closely, but size and coloration vary with sex, age, moisture, lighting, and soil staining. Location and habitat should therefore be considered alongside visible markings.

Appearance and Field Marks
The patch-nosed salamander has a delicate, elongated body, a relatively small head, short limbs, and a narrow tail. Its skin appears smooth and moist rather than dry or granular. The eyes are dark and prominent at close range, although the animal’s entire head may be only a few millimeters wide.
The best-known field mark is the yellow to yellow-orange area on the snout of an adult male. This contrasting pigment gives the species its common name. Additional pale or yellowish markings may occur on the head and body, but their placement and visibility can differ with sex and maturity. Females generally lack the same sharply defined male snout patch and may show a different pattern of yellowish pigmentation.
Background coloration ranges from brown and charcoal-brown to grayish brown. Fine mottling may be present. The underside is generally darker or more subdued than the brightest dorsal markings. Mud, tannin-stained water, glare, and camera flash can significantly change the apparent colors, so identification should not depend on a single photograph of the nose.

Size and Measurements
Adults are commonly reported at roughly 3.8–5 cm (1.5–2 in) in total length. Snout-to-vent length is usually around 2.4–3 cm (0.9–1.2 in), with the tail accounting for much of the remaining length. Females may average slightly larger than males, although overlap should be expected.
Because the species is so small, visual estimates are easily exaggerated. A nearby leaf, fingertip, or pebble can make an individual look larger than it is. The salamander should not be restrained or stretched for measurement; a photograph beside a scale, taken without touching the animal, is safer. A dependable typical adult weight range is not widely reported.
Range and Distribution
The known distribution centers on the southern Appalachian foothills of northeastern Georgia, with records extending into adjacent western South Carolina. Documented sites are associated with small tributaries and headwater systems in the upper Savannah River region. The complete range boundary remains imperfectly known.
This salamander appears to have a much narrower distribution than many eastern North American plethodontids. Suitable-looking streams outside the documented area may not contain it, while tiny occupied seepages may be overlooked during conventional surveys. Records should include coordinates, habitat photographs, date, weather, and clear dorsal and head images whenever local regulations allow documentation.

Habitat
Patch-nosed salamanders inhabit cool, shaded, persistently wet environments. Typical settings include spring seeps, narrow first-order streams, shallow runs, saturated stream banks, and wet pockets beside flowing water. They may be discovered beneath small rocks, within waterlogged leaf litter, or among fine root mats and organic debris.
Surrounding forest helps maintain shade, high humidity, and moderate water temperatures. Clean groundwater input, stable banks, and natural cover are likely important habitat features. These salamanders are not typically encountered wandering across dry uplands. Even within an occupied watershed, their distribution may be concentrated around particular wet microhabitats.

Behavior
Much of the species’ behavior remains poorly documented. Individuals are secretive and spend considerable time beneath cover or within saturated spaces along stream edges. Surface activity is most likely during damp, mild conditions, especially when leaf litter and streamside soils remain wet.
Like other lungless salamanders, the patch-nosed salamander must limit moisture loss. It probably retreats deeper beneath rocks, roots, or wet debris during hot or dry weather. Activity may continue through relatively cool periods where spring water keeps temperatures stable.
If disturbed, an individual may crawl into submerged debris, disappear through gravel, or remain motionless against a dark background. Its small body and muted coloration make it remarkably difficult to relocate. Tail loss is a possible defense in plethodontid salamanders, so avoid handling.
Diet and Hunting
Detailed dietary studies are limited, but the patch-nosed salamander is expected to feed on minute invertebrates available in wet leaf litter and along seep margins. Likely prey includes springtails, mites, tiny insect larvae, small worms, and other soft-bodied organisms that can be swallowed whole.
Hunting probably occurs at very short range. Plethodontid salamanders typically use vision and chemical cues to detect prey, capturing small animals with a rapid tongue or forward head movement. The species’ Miniature size restricts it to particularly small prey. Feeding opportunities may be greatest at night or under dark cover, although direct observations are scarce.

Vocalizations
No advertisement call or other routine field vocalization is known for the patch-nosed salamander. Salamanders do not produce the conspicuous breeding choruses associated with frogs and toads. Consequently, acoustic surveys are not useful for locating this species.
Some salamanders can make faint defensive sounds under stress, but such behavior has not been established as a dependable characteristic of Urspelerpes brucei. Searchers should rely on habitat, visual examination, and carefully documented locality records rather than sound.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding behavior and nest placement are not yet well characterized. Courtship probably occurs in concealed, damp situations, as it does in related lungless salamanders. Fertilization in plethodontids is generally internal through transfer of a spermatophore, but species-specific courtship details for the patch-nosed salamander require further study.
Egg sites have not been described well enough to provide a dependable field profile. Potential nesting microhabitats may include protected spaces beneath rocks, within seep banks, or among submerged or saturated debris. Turning cover in an occupied seep could expose adults or eggs, alter water flow, and destroy a humid refuge. Return any displaced rock gently to its original position.
Reproduction
Important parts of the reproductive cycle—including seasonal timing, clutch size, incubation period, and development—remain insufficiently documented. Reports about larvae or early juveniles should therefore be interpreted cautiously unless supported by expert examination.
Young salamanders would lack the fully developed sexual coloration used to recognize adult males and females. A tiny streamside juvenile may be impossible to identify confidently from color alone. Larval or juvenile records are especially valuable when documented with detailed photographs and precise habitat notes, but do not collect animals without appropriate permits.
Similar Species
Dwarf salamanders: Dwarf salamanders in the genus Eurycea are small, slender, and frequently associated with seeps and streams. They often have a more obvious yellow, bronze, or orange background color and dark lateral striping. Range overlap and individual variation can make photographs difficult to interpret.
Southern two-lined salamander: This species is usually larger and more robust, with a yellowish body bordered by two dark lines along the back. Juveniles can be small, but their longer limbs and more conventional striped pattern differ from the compact, dark appearance of many patch-nosed salamanders.
Four-toed salamander: Four-toed salamanders have only four toes on each hind foot, a distinct constriction at the base of the tail, and a pale belly marked with black flecks. They are often associated with mossy wetlands rather than flowing headwater seepages.
Young dusky salamanders: Juvenile dusky salamanders can occur under streamside rocks, but they tend to have a sturdier build, larger hind limbs, and a characteristic pale line running from the eye toward the jaw. The male patch-nosed salamander’s yellow snout patch is different from this eye-to-jaw line.
Conservation
The patch-nosed salamander is commonly treated as Data Deficient globally because its population size, trends, complete range, and life history are not adequately understood. A limited known distribution nevertheless makes habitat changes a practical concern.
Potential pressures include sediment entering headwater streams, removal of streamside forest, altered groundwater flow, road construction, chemical contamination, prolonged drought, and severe flooding. Activities occurring upslope can affect a seep even when the immediate stream bank remains wooded.
Repeated recreational searching may also disturb the small cover objects these animals use. Ethical observation means minimizing trampling, avoiding excavation, replacing cover exactly, and following state regulations. Submit photographic records to qualified state wildlife biologists or museum researchers when an observation may represent a new locality.
Field Identification Tips
- Begin with geography. Confirm that the site lies within or near the documented northeastern Georgia–western South Carolina range.
- Check the microhabitat. Give greatest attention to cool spring runs, shallow headwaters, saturated banks, and wet leaf packs under intact forest canopy.
- Judge size carefully. An adult patch-nosed salamander is exceptionally small; many superficially similar stream salamanders are noticeably larger.
- Photograph the head and back. A sharp dorsal image can show the snout patch, eye region, body pattern, limbs, and tail proportions.
- Do not rely on yellow pigment alone. Soil staining, flash reflection, and natural variation can produce misleading pale areas.
- Limit disturbance. Search only a small number of cover objects and return each one before moving to the next.
- Use expert review. Difficult females and juveniles may require examination by a regional salamander specialist.
