The Pacific tree frog is a small, adaptable amphibian known for its dark eye stripe, rounded toe pads, and remarkably variable color. Its familiar two-part call is one of the characteristic nighttime sounds of western North American wetlands—and the source of the classic “ribbit” widely used in films.
Most field guides use the scientific name Pseudacris regilla, although some taxonomic treatments recognize closely related regional forms or species, including the Sierran chorus frog and Baja California tree frog. Common names also vary: “Pacific chorus frog” is frequently used, especially because this frog spends much of its time near the ground rather than high in trees. When recording an observation, location, call, and photographs are more useful than color alone.

Quick Identification
- Size: Usually about 0.75–2 inches (1.9–5 cm) from snout to vent.
- Color: Green, tan, brown, gray, reddish, or combinations of these colors.

Appearance and Field Marks
The dark eye mask is the most dependable visible field mark. It begins near the snout, passes through the eye, and usually continues back toward the forelimb. A pale line may border the upper lip, creating a sharp contrast with the mask. The head is relatively broad, the snout is blunt to somewhat pointed, and the eyes have horizontal pupils.
Dorsal color is highly variable. Individuals may be leaf-green, cream, gray, bronze, reddish brown, or dark brown. Some are nearly uniform, while others have irregular spots or bars. A dark Y-shaped or triangular marking may occur between the eyes, but it is not present in every animal. The underside is pale, and the throat of a breeding male may appear darker or yellowish.
Pacific tree frogs can change color gradually in response to temperature, moisture, background, and physiological condition. The change usually takes minutes to hours rather than occurring instantly. Consequently, a green frog and a brown frog found at the same pond may belong to the same species.
The fingers and toes end in rounded pads that help grip stems, bark, rocks, and other surfaces. Hind feet have limited webbing compared with those of highly aquatic frogs. The skin normally looks smooth or finely textured, distinguishing it from the dry, conspicuously warty skin typical of many toads.

Size and Measurements
Adults generally measure about 0.75–2 inches (1.9–5 cm) in snout-to-vent length. Females tend to average larger and more robust than males, although size overlaps and is not reliable for sexing a single frog. Newly transformed froglets are much smaller and may still retain a short tail stub.
Field measurements should use snout-to-vent length rather than total length, because adult frogs lack a tail. Avoid stretching or restraining an animal unnecessarily. Apparent size can also be misleading in photographs, so include a nearby natural object or scale without disturbing the frog.
Range and Distribution
In the broad traditional sense, Pacific tree frogs and their close regional relatives occupy much of the Pacific slope of North America, from southwestern Canada through Washington, Oregon, California, and into Baja California. They also occur east of the major coastal ranges in some inland valleys, plateaus, and mountain basins.
The exact range assigned to Pseudacris regilla depends on the taxonomy followed. Some authorities separate southern and interior populations as the Baja California treefrog, P. hypochondriaca, and Sierran chorus frog, P. sierra. Boundaries shown in different field guides may therefore disagree. For practical identification, observers should consult current regional records and document the locality carefully.
Within suitable regions, the species may occur from coastal lowlands to mountain habitats. Elevational limits vary with latitude, snow cover, water availability, and the presence of fish-free or lightly stocked breeding sites.

Habitat
Pacific tree frogs use an unusually broad range of habitats. Breeding sites include seasonal pools, shallow pond edges, marshes, flooded fields, roadside ditches, slow stream margins, and quiet backwaters. Temporary wetlands can be especially valuable because they often lack predatory fish.
Outside the breeding season, adults may be found in grasslands, shrublands, chaparral, oak woodland, conifer forest, riparian vegetation, gardens, and developed areas with adequate cover. Despite the name “tree frog,” they are commonly encountered on the ground or in low shrubs. Individuals shelter under logs, bark, rocks, leaf litter, dense plants, and other cool, protected objects.
Good habitat combines breeding water with nearby terrestrial refuges. A pond surrounded by bare pavement or frequently mowed turf provides fewer opportunities than one bordered by native grasses, shrubs, woody debris, and undisturbed soil.

Behavior
Activity is strongly influenced by moisture and temperature. Frogs often emerge after rain, during damp evenings, or on mild nights. In dry weather, they retreat into shaded crevices and other humid shelters. Populations in colder areas become inactive during winter, while frogs in mild coastal climates may remain active for much of the year.
Adults move overland between breeding water, feeding areas, and seasonal refuges. At a pond, they may sit on floating vegetation, sedges, low branches, banks, or partly submerged stems. When threatened, a frog often jumps into vegetation or water and remains motionless.
Toe pads permit climbing, but these frogs are not restricted to trees. Their combination of climbing ability, tolerance for varied habitats, and use of both seasonal and permanent water helps explain their presence in parks and residential landscapes.
Diet and Hunting
Adults eat small invertebrates, including flies, mosquitoes, moths, beetles, spiders, ants, and other arthropods of manageable size. Diet changes with season, habitat, and available prey. They are opportunistic predators rather than specialists.
A hunting frog commonly waits motionless, watches nearby movement, and lunges when prey comes within reach. It may also make short movements through vegetation while searching. Feeding occurs during both day and night when conditions are suitable, although damp nighttime conditions often favor activity.
Tadpoles feed differently from adults. They graze on algae, microorganisms, decomposing plant material, and organic films on submerged surfaces. Their feeding helps transfer nutrients through shallow-water food webs.

Vocalizations
The advertisement call is a loud, two-part note commonly rendered as “kreck-ek,” “ooh-yeh,” or “rib-bit.” Males call repeatedly, and a large chorus can carry a considerable distance on a quiet night. Calling usually intensifies after dark and during mild, wet weather.
Males also produce shorter calls during close encounters with other males. Calling rate and tone vary with temperature, individual size, and social setting. Because related chorus frogs can sound similar, recordings made with location and date information are particularly useful.
The call’s association with Hollywood soundtracks is largely accidental: these abundant California frogs were readily recorded, and their voice became a standard cinematic shorthand for frogs everywhere.
Breeding and Nesting
Breeding timing varies greatly across the range. In mild lowlands, calling may begin during winter rains; in colder or higher country, breeding generally follows snowmelt and spring warming. Rainfall can trigger strong calling and movement toward water.
Males gather at shallow wetlands and call from the bank, floating vegetation, stems, or the water surface. A receptive female enters the breeding area, and the male clasps her behind the forelimbs in amplexus. Frogs do not build a nest in the birdlike sense.
Eggs are placed in small, soft clusters, often attached to submerged grasses, twigs, or other vegetation in shallow water. Several clusters may be deposited during a breeding event. Exact clutch size varies with female size and local conditions, so counts from a single cluster do not necessarily represent a female’s entire reproductive output.
Reproduction
Fertilization is external. Eggs develop into aquatic larvae, with hatching time affected strongly by water temperature. Pacific tree frog tadpoles typically have rounded bodies, eyes set toward the sides, and deep tail fins. Their coloration is often dark brown, olive, or mottled, sometimes with a metallic sheen under good light.
Larvae grow through spring or early summer at many sites, but development can be faster in warm, shrinking pools and slower in cold water. During metamorphosis, hind legs appear first, followed by forelegs; the tail is then absorbed. Recently transformed froglets leave the water and seek nearby moist cover.
Breeding success can vary sharply from year to year. A temporary pool may provide excellent fish-free habitat but dry before larvae transform, while a permanent pond may support fish or introduced bullfrogs that consume eggs, tadpoles, or small frogs.

Similar Species
Sierran chorus frog and Baja California tree frog: These close relatives may be extremely difficult to distinguish visually. Geographic location, calls, and the taxonomic treatment being followed are often more informative than color or pattern.
Boreal chorus frog: This species generally lacks expanded toe pads and often shows three dark stripes or rows of spots down the back. Its call resembles a fingernail being drawn across the teeth of a comb rather than the Pacific tree frog’s two-part note.
Cricket frogs: Cricket frogs have more pointed, less developed toe pads, rougher-looking skin, and a rapid clicking or pebble-like call. Range usually resolves confusion.
Young true frogs: Juvenile red-legged or spotted frogs may share brown or green coloration, but they usually lack the crisp dark eye mask and rounded climbing pads. Their hind feet are generally more extensively webbed.
Toads: Young toads can be similar in size but normally have drier, wartier skin, visible parotoid glands behind the eyes, and no rounded toe pads.
Conservation
The Pacific tree frog remains widespread and locally abundant across much of its range, but local populations can decline when breeding wetlands are drained, polluted, isolated, or altered by invasive predators. Road mortality, disease, prolonged drought, severe wildfire effects, and changing seasonal water patterns may also affect particular populations.
Useful conservation measures include protecting shallow wetlands, retaining vegetated buffers, reducing pesticide use, maintaining connections between ponds and upland refuges, and avoiding the release of fish, bullfrogs, or unwanted pets. In gardens, a pond with gently sloping edges and native cover can provide habitat, but animals should arrive naturally.
Amphibians readily absorb substances through their skin. Observers should avoid handling whenever possible. If handling is necessary for authorized survey work, hands or gloves should be clean, wet, and free of lotion, sunscreen, insect repellent, and other chemicals. Disinfect equipment between sites to reduce the risk of spreading pathogens.
Field Identification Tips
- Look for the mask: Confirm a dark stripe through the eye extending toward the shoulder.
- Check the toes: Rounded pads support identification as a climbing chorus frog.
- Ignore color as a deciding feature: Green, brown, gray, and reddish individuals may occur together.
- Listen for two-part calls: A repeated “rib-bit” is often easier to detect than the frog itself.
- Use geography carefully: Closely related forms are visually similar, and taxonomic boundaries differ among sources.
- Search low: Examine pond-edge grasses, sedges, low shrubs, logs, and leaf litter rather than only trees.
- Document without disturbance: Photograph the side of the head, back, toes, and surrounding habitat; record the date, locality, and call when possible.
