The Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus) is a venomous pit viper of western North America. It occurs from southern British Columbia through Washington and Oregon into northern and central California, although exact boundaries vary among taxonomic treatments. Watch where hands and feet are placed, use a light outdoors at night, keep dogs leashed, and give any snake a broad escape route. From several body lengths away, stop and allow it to move off.
