Introduction

New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) is a tall, late-blooming perennial wildflower native to much of central and eastern North America. Its abundant purple, violet, lavender, or occasionally pink flower heads brighten meadows, roadsides, stream margins, and other sunny habitats from late summer into autumn.

This species is especially valuable because it flowers when many summer plants have finished. Bees, migrating butterflies, and other insects visit its nectar- and pollen-rich flower heads. In a garden, its height and tendency to form substantial clumps make it best suited to the middle or back of a border, a meadow planting, or a naturalized area.

Older field guides may list the plant as Aster novae-angliae. Botanists transferred most North American asters to other genera, and Symphyotrichum novae-angliae is now the accepted scientific name.

Geographic Range

New England aster is native across a broad portion of central and eastern North America. Its natural distribution extends through parts of central and eastern Canada and south through the northeastern, midwestern, and portions of the southeastern United States. Its western limits are less continuous, and planted or naturalized populations occur outside the principal native range.

Because it is widely cultivated and readily produces wind-dispersed fruits, a roadside or vacant-lot population does not always indicate that the species is locally native. Regional floras, herbarium records, and state or provincial plant atlases are useful when local status matters.

Similar Species and Look-Alikes

New York aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii) can have similarly colored flowers and clasping leaves. It is generally less coarsely hairy, and its involucral bracts tend to be less strongly spreading. It is especially associated with the northeastern coastal region and nearby wetlands.
