The mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus) is a large, permanently aquatic salamander native to eastern and central North America. Unlike most salamanders, it retains bushy external gills throughout life and does not transform into a land-dwelling adult. It spends every season underwater in lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and substantial streams.
Despite its size, a mudpuppy is easy to overlook. It is mainly active at night, shelters beneath submerged cover, and often occupies dark or turbid water. Anglers occasionally encounter one on a baited hook or beneath winter ice. The name comes from the old belief that the animal makes a doglike bark, but it does not produce a loud underwater call comparable to a dog’s bark.
Mudpuppies are harmless to people and play a useful ecological role as both predators and prey. They should be released carefully where they were found rather than killed or moved to another water body.

Appearance and Field Marks
A mudpuppy has a long trunk, short sturdy legs, a broad head, and a muscular swimming tail. The small eyes lack movable eyelids. Three reddish, maroon, or brownish gill stalks project from each side of the neck, with many fine filaments creating a bushy appearance. Gill size and color can vary with oxygen conditions, activity, and circulation, so pale or relatively compact gills do not necessarily indicate a different species.
The upper surface is generally brown, gray, reddish brown, or olive. Uneven dark spots often extend across the back, sides, and tail. Some animals are strongly marked, while others appear subdued or nearly uniform. The underside is usually paler and may be grayish or cream with scattered pigment, particularly in larger animals.
The skin is smooth and lacks scales. A shallow groove behind the head marks the gular fold, and vertical grooves may be visible along the sides of the body. Count the toes when you can see them safely: mudpuppies have four on both the front and hind feet. Most other large salamanders have five toes on the hind feet.
Size and Measurements
Most adult mudpuppies measure roughly 20–33 cm (8–13 in) in total length, including the tail. Individuals exceeding 40 cm (16 in) are possible but much less common; reported maximum lengths approach 49 cm (19 in). Local growth rates and adult size vary with food, temperature, population, and habitat.
Hatchlings are only a few centimeters long and are more slender than adults. Juveniles often show light longitudinal stripes against a darker body, a pattern that becomes less distinct as they grow. Because the species does not undergo the usual salamander metamorphosis, there is no sharp transition from an aquatic larva to a terrestrial adult.
Range and Distribution
The mudpuppy occurs across a broad but uneven portion of eastern and central North America. Its range is centered on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence, Ohio, and Mississippi drainage systems and includes parts of southern Canada and many U.S. states in the Midwest and East. Populations also occur in portions of the Appalachian and upper southern regions.
Distribution maps should be interpreted cautiously. Members of the genus Necturus have undergone taxonomic revision, and older sources sometimes treated other waterdogs as mudpuppy populations or subspecies. Introductions may also account for records outside the generally accepted native range. Habitat
Mudpuppies inhabit permanent freshwater, including large streams, rivers, inland lakes, Great Lakes shorelines, reservoirs, and deep ponds connected to suitable drainage systems. They generally require water that remains available year-round and contains enough dissolved oxygen to support aquatic life.
During the day they shelter beneath flat rocks, logs, slabs of bark, submerged debris, undercut banks, or other bottom cover. Rocky shorelines and stream reaches with crevices can provide especially useful retreats. Mud, sand, gravel, cobble, and bedrock substrates may all be used when adequate shelter and prey are present.
Depth varies seasonally and geographically. Animals may move into relatively shallow water during cool periods, including beneath winter ice, while warmer conditions can lead them to deeper water or well-oxygenated refuges. They do not normally leave the water to cross land.

Behavior
Mudpuppies are primarily nocturnal. After dark, they emerge from cover and walk along the bottom or swim with side-to-side movements of the tail. Short legs help with bottom movement, while the compressed tail supplies most of the thrust during faster swimming.
They remain active in cold water and may be encountered during winter, a season when many other amphibians are inactive. Activity can decline during unusually warm conditions. Mudpuppies rely on chemical cues, touch, and vibration as well as vision when navigating and finding prey.
When threatened, an individual may retreat into a crevice, thrash, or attempt to bite. The bite is not venomous, but handling should be avoided. Their delicate skin and gill filaments can be injured by dry hands, hooks, or prolonged exposure to air.
Diet and Hunting
Mudpuppies are opportunistic aquatic predators. Common foods include crayfish, aquatic insect larvae, worms, snails, small clams, amphipods, small fish, fish eggs, and other amphibians. Diet changes with the animal’s size and with prey availability in each water body.
Hunting generally occurs on or near the bottom. A mudpuppy investigates cover and sediment, then captures prey with a rapid forward movement and suction-assisted opening of the mouth. Its feeding habits can be beneficial: mudpuppies consume abundant invertebrates and are not specialized predators of sport fish.

Vocalizations
Mudpuppies have been reported to make faint squeaks, grunts, or squeals when handled or distressed. These sounds are quiet and are not reliable for field detection. The familiar claim that mudpuppies bark like dogs is an exaggeration and probably contributed more to the common name than to practical identification.
Observers should not handle an animal in an attempt to elicit a sound. Visual features—especially permanent external gills, four toes on each foot, body proportions, and locality—are much more dependable.
Breeding and Nesting
Courtship and mating usually take place in autumn, although timing varies across the range. Fertilization is internal after the female takes up a spermatophore deposited by the male. Sperm can be stored through winter, allowing egg laying to occur later, commonly in spring or early summer.
The female chooses a protected underwater nest site beneath a rock, log, board, or similar object. She turns beneath the cover and attaches individual eggs to its underside. Suitable nesting cover normally has a protected cavity and continuing water circulation.
Females remain with the clutch during development and may defend it from potential predators. Rocks and logs that appear ordinary from above can therefore conceal eggs. Field observers should replace any accidentally lifted cover gently in its original position without touching the nest.
Reproduction
Clutch size is variable, often numbering several dozen eggs and sometimes more than 100. Each egg is enclosed in a gelatinous capsule and attached separately rather than deposited as a free-floating mass. Development commonly takes about one to two months, depending strongly on water temperature and local conditions.
Newly hatched young possess external gills and functional limbs. Juveniles tend to be dark with conspicuous pale stripes along the back or sides. These markings help distinguish them from the more blotched appearance of many adults.
Mudpuppies are paedomorphic: they become sexually mature while retaining larval characteristics, most visibly the external gills and aquatic tail fin. Maturity generally requires several years, and individuals may live for decades under favorable conditions. Exact age is difficult to determine from appearance alone.
Similar Species
Hellbender: The hellbender is larger, flatter, and more wrinkled along the sides. Adult hellbenders lack bushy external gills and have five toes on each hind foot. Their eyes are very small, and their body looks more dorsoventrally flattened.
Other waterdogs: Gulf Coast waterdogs and related Necturus species can be extremely similar. Pattern, size, gill structure, and especially geographic range all matter. Photographs of the back, belly, head, tail, and feet are useful when documenting a record, but expert review may still be needed.
Larval mole salamanders: Tiger salamander and other larvae have external gills, but they usually have a more delicate build, a taller tail fin, and five toes on the hind feet. They eventually metamorphose where conditions allow.
Sirens: Sirens also retain external gills, but their eel-like bodies lack hind limbs. Mudpuppies have four well-developed legs.
Conservation
The mudpuppy remains widespread, but local populations may decline or disappear. Important threats include water pollution, sedimentation, shoreline alteration, loss of submerged cover, chemical spills, dams or other hydrologic changes, and unnecessary killing. Heavy silt can fill spaces beneath rocks and reduce nesting or shelter habitat.
Because mudpuppies are long-lived and mature slowly, population losses may not be quickly replaced. They can also serve as hosts for the larval stage of the salamander mussel, making their presence relevant to another unusual freshwater species.
Conservation status differs by state and province. Anglers should check local regulations, remove hooks with minimal injury when possible, and release the animal immediately. Never transfer a mudpuppy between waters, as movement can spread pathogens and disrupt native populations.
Field Identification Tips
- Look for three feathery gill branches on each side of the head; they should be present even on a large adult.
- Confirm four toes on the hind foot if the animal can be observed without restraint.
- Note the broad head, short legs, spotted body, and compressed swimming tail.
- Record the water body, drainage, date, approximate depth, substrate, and type of cover.
- Photograph the animal in water whenever possible, including dorsal and side views.
- Do not identify by color alone; mudpuppy color and spotting vary considerably.
- Avoid lifting embedded rocks, disturbing nests, or placing the animal on dry ground.
