Introduction

The Mink Frog (Lithobates septentrionalis) is a strongly aquatic frog of cool northern wetlands. It occurs mainly in Canada and the northern United States, where it inhabits lake margins, ponds, slow streams, and other permanent waters with abundant floating or emergent vegetation. Many individuals remain close to water throughout the active season.

This medium-sized frog is named for the musky odor it may release when disturbed. The scent is often compared to mink, onions, or decaying vegetation, but odor is subjective and should not be used as the sole identification feature. A combination of mottled coloration, reduced dorsolateral folds, extensive toe webbing, aquatic behavior, and northern habitat is more reliable.

Mink Frogs can be difficult to observe even where they are common. They often rest among lily pads or shoreline plants and quickly dive when approached. Their low, knocking calls may reveal a population before any frogs are seen.

Quick Identification

  • Overall appearance: A medium-sized olive, greenish, tan, or brown frog marked with irregular dark blotches.
  • Back: Usually lacks the long, prominent dorsolateral folds seen on a Green Frog.
  • Hind legs: Often barred or mottled, with yellowish coloring on the concealed surfaces.

  • Call: A series of low, hollow, or metallic-sounding knocks, sometimes compared to tapping on wood.
  • Odor: May produce a distinctive musky scent when alarmed, though this varies and is only detectable with close contact.

Appearance and Field Marks

Mink Frogs have a relatively smooth to lightly granular back. Base color ranges from bright olive green to dull greenish brown, gray-brown, or tan. Dark brown or blackish spots and irregular blotches are scattered across the back and sides. These markings may merge into a marbled or netlike pattern, especially on darker individuals.

The upper lip is usually pale, while the belly is whitish to yellowish. Yellow coloration is often visible on the lower abdomen and the concealed surfaces of the hind legs. The legs commonly show dark crossbars. A dark mask may extend behind the eye, although it is not always sharply defined.

Unlike Green Frogs and many leopard frogs, Mink Frogs generally do not show strong, continuous ridges running down both sides of the back. Short folds or raised areas may be present, so the apparent absence of dorsolateral folds should be considered with other traits. The fold curving around the rear of the tympanum is usually more evident.

The eyes are set high on the head, and the external eardrum, or tympanum, is visible behind each eye. The long hind feet have extensive webbing. Skin color and pattern vary with age, temperature, lighting, and local conditions.

Size and Measurements

Most adult Mink Frogs measure about 4.5–7.5 cm (1.8–3 inches) from snout to vent. Large females may approach or slightly exceed 8 cm (3.1 inches), but size varies geographically and should not be treated as a strict identification boundary.

Females average larger and heavier than males. During the breeding season, mature males may be recognized by swollen thumbs, nuptial pads, and paired vocal sacs that inflate when calling. A male’s tympanum is often proportionally larger than that of a female. Juveniles resemble small adults but may have sharper-looking markings and less obvious yellow coloration.

Range and Distribution

The Mink Frog is a northern North American species. Its distribution centers on the Great Lakes region, southeastern and central Canada, and the northeastern United States. In the United States, it occurs from Minnesota and Wisconsin east through Michigan, northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, with localized distribution near the southern edge of its range.

In Canada, it is found across portions of Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Labrador, and adjoining eastern regions. Its range is not continuous across all apparently suitable areas, and records near the margins should be checked against current state or provincial data. Because the species is closely tied to cool, permanent water, local occurrence can be patchy. A wetland may support Mink Frogs while a nearby warmer or more temporary pond does not.

Habitat

Mink Frogs inhabit the edges of lakes, ponds, marshes, slow-moving streams, bog pools, and protected river backwaters. They favor permanent water with abundant cover, including water lilies, pondweeds, sedges, cattails, rushes, and overhanging shoreline plants.

Cool water is an important feature of much of their habitat. They may occupy clear lakes as well as dark, tannin-stained waters, provided suitable vegetation and shallow shoreline structure are available. Individuals often sit on floating leaves, partially submerged logs, mats of vegetation, or muddy banks within a short leap of deep water.

Compared with Green Frogs, Mink Frogs tend to be even more closely associated with open water and floating vegetation. They overwinter underwater, generally in areas that remain oxygenated and do not freeze solid.

Behavior

Mink Frogs are active mainly during the warmer months and may be encountered by day or night. They are alert, shoreline frogs that readily dive when disturbed. After entering the water, a frog may hide beneath vegetation or sediment and remain submerged until danger has passed.

Basking individuals sometimes rest with most of the body above water on lily pads or floating debris. Their mottled pattern blends well with wet leaves, algae, and reflected light. When approached slowly, a frog may remain motionless rather than flee immediately.

The species is less likely than many other frogs to travel far over land. Movement between water bodies does occur, particularly among juveniles or under moist conditions, but adults usually remain strongly associated with aquatic habitat. Handling should be avoided: amphibian skin is permeable, and unnecessary contact can damage the frog or transfer pathogens between wetlands.

Diet and Hunting

Adult Mink Frogs are opportunistic predators. Their diet includes aquatic and terrestrial insects, spiders, snails, small crustaceans, worms, and other invertebrates available along the water’s edge. Larger individuals may occasionally consume very small vertebrates, including small frogs, but such prey does not necessarily constitute a major part of their diet.

A hunting frog commonly waits on a floating leaf or at the shoreline and lunges when prey comes within reach. It captures prey by rapidly extending its sticky tongue or by seizing it directly with its mouth. Feeding often increases after dusk, during warm rain, or when insects are abundant over the water.

Tadpoles feed differently. They graze on algae, microorganisms, biofilms, and decaying organic material, helping transfer energy through the wetland food web.

Vocalizations

The male’s advertisement call is a short series of low, hollow notes. Listeners variously describe it as “cut-cut-cut,” “cuk-cuk-cuk,” a metallic knocking sound, or someone tapping pieces of wood together. Calls are often delivered from among floating vegetation, sometimes with only the caller’s head visible.

The sound carries across calm water but can be overlooked among Green Frog calls, bird notes, and shoreline noise. Calling is generally strongest from late spring into summer, depending on latitude, water temperature, and weather. Choruses may continue after dark, although daytime calling also occurs.

Call quality is one of the most useful indicators for locating the species, but recordings should be compared carefully. Distance, echoes, and overlapping frogs can make individual notes sound different.

Breeding and Nesting

Breeding usually occurs later than in many woodland frogs, typically from late spring through midsummer. In the coldest parts of the range, activity may begin later and continue into summer. Males call from shallow water among lily pads, emergent stems, and other aquatic cover.

Mink Frogs do not build nests in the bird or mammal sense. During amplexus, the male clasps the female behind the forelegs while she releases eggs into the water. The eggs are deposited in soft, gelatinous masses, often attached to submerged or floating vegetation near the surface.

Egg-mass size varies with the female and local conditions and may number from several hundred to several thousand eggs. Exact counts are difficult in the field and are not needed for identification. The dark upper surface of each embryo and lighter underside may be visible through the surrounding jelly.

Reproduction

Egg development is influenced strongly by water temperature. After hatching, the larvae remain in vegetated shallows, where they feed and seek shelter from fish, aquatic insects, turtles, birds, and other predators.

Mink Frog tadpoles are generally olive, brownish, or dark greenish, often with fine mottling. The tail is muscular, with a translucent fin marked by darker flecks. They can grow relatively large before transformation.

In much of the species’ cool northern range, tadpoles do not metamorphose during their first summer. Instead, they overwinter underwater and complete development the following season; development may take longer under especially cold conditions. Newly transformed froglets retain a tail stub briefly and remain close to shallow cover. Sexual maturity usually requires additional growth over subsequent active seasons.

Similar Species

Green Frog: Green Frogs usually have distinct dorsolateral folds extending from behind the eyes partway down the back. They often show a greener face, less extensive dark dorsal mottling, and less webbing on the fourth hind toe. Their familiar call resembles the pluck of a loose banjo string.

Northern Leopard Frog: Leopard frogs have rounded, discrete dark spots with pale borders and strong, continuous dorsolateral folds. They are also more likely to forage in meadows and other terrestrial settings away from water.

Pickerel Frog: Pickerel Frogs have squarish dark spots arranged in rows, prominent dorsolateral folds, and vivid yellow or orange on the concealed hind legs. Their markings are usually more orderly than the irregular mottling of a Mink Frog.

American Bullfrog: Bullfrogs become much larger and have a heavy body, broad head, and a fold that curves around the tympanum without continuing along the back. Young bullfrogs may be confused with Mink Frogs, but they typically lack the Mink Frog’s dense, irregular dorsal pattern and characteristic northern association.

Conservation

The Mink Frog is not generally considered globally threatened, but status and trends differ among jurisdictions. Populations near the southern edge of the range may be particularly sensitive to warmer water, shoreline alteration, wetland drainage, pollution, invasive plants, and changes in aquatic vegetation.

Because the species often requires permanent, well-oxygenated water for overwintering adults and larvae, changes in water level or quality can affect multiple life stages simultaneously. Road construction and shoreline development may also isolate neighboring populations.

Useful conservation measures include retaining natural shorelines, limiting nutrient and chemical runoff, protecting connected wetland complexes, and avoiding disturbance of shallow vegetated breeding areas. Field observers can contribute by submitting photographs and call recordings to recognized state, provincial, or regional wildlife databases.

Field Identification Tips

  1. Start with habitat: Search cool, permanent northern waters with lily pads or dense emergent vegetation.
  2. Look for irregular mottling: The pattern is generally blotchy or marbled rather than a tidy series of rounded spots.
  3. Check the back: Strong, unbroken dorsolateral folds suggest a Green, Leopard, or Pickerel Frog instead.
  4. Watch the feet: Extensive hind-toe webbing helps identify the species when visible in a photograph.
  5. Listen for knocking calls: A low series of wooden or metallic notes can locate hidden males.
  6. Photograph from several angles: useful views include the back, the side of the head, the hind legs, and the feet. Do not capture or reposition the frog merely to obtain these views.
  7. Do not rely on odor: descriptions of smell vary, and handling wildlife solely to test for scent is inappropriate.
