Indian paintbrush is a familiar name for many species in the genus Castilleja. This guide focuses on scarlet Indian paintbrush, Castilleja coccinea, the red-bracted species native to much of eastern and central North America. Because other paintbrushes differ in form, habitat, and range, a common name alone is not always enough for identification.
The plant’s apparent “flowers” are mainly colorful bracts—modified leaves surrounding much smaller, tubular flowers. The stems and leaves are often softly hairy. Scarlet Indian paintbrush is an eastern and central North American species. Its native distribution extends across parts of southern Canada and through a broad portion of the eastern and central United States. It occurs from portions of the Great Plains and prairie provinces eastward to the Great Lakes, New England, and Atlantic regions, and southward through parts of the Southeast and south-central United States.

Scarlet Indian paintbrush should not be treated as an ordinary edible wild plant. Some historical reports describe limited use of flowers from certain paintbrush species, but species identity, preparation, and growing conditions matter. Castilleja plants may acquire compounds from host plants, and some can accumulate selenium when growing in selenium-rich soils.
