The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is a large, heavy-bodied freshwater turtle found across much of eastern and central North America. It spends most of its life in ponds, marshes, lakes, slow rivers, and other waters with soft bottoms and abundant cover. Although familiar for its defensive behavior on land, a snapping turtle encountered underwater usually avoids people or retreats into vegetation.
This species is adapted for an aquatic life. Its shell is relatively small compared with its body, and it cannot withdraw as completely as many other turtles. Powerful jaws, a flexible neck, and vigorous lunges compensate for that limited shell protection. Identification should be based on the long saw-toothed tail, massive head, reduced plastron, and comparatively smooth adult carapace—not aggressive behavior alone.

The head is large, with a pointed snout and a sharp, hooked beak rather than teeth. The neck is long and flexible enough to reach toward the sides and well back along the front half of the shell. Loose, warty skin covers the neck and limbs. Color varies from tan and olive-brown to dark brown or black. The underside is generally yellowish, tan, or gray.

Size and Physical Characteristics
Most adults have a straight carapace length of about 8–14 inches (20–36 cm), although exceptional animals can approach 18 inches (46 cm). Many weigh roughly 10–35 pounds (4.5–16 kg); unusually large individuals may exceed 50 pounds (23 kg). Size varies with age, sex, region, habitat quality, and food availability.
Mature males generally grow larger than females and often have longer, thicker tails. The cloacal opening of a male lies farther beyond the rear edge of the shell, but sex should not be determined by handling an unfamiliar wild turtle. The feet have strong claws, and the toes are webbed for swimming and moving over soft sediment.
Similar Species
The alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is the most important comparison. It has a proportionally larger, blockier head, three prominent shell ridges that remain obvious in adults, and a strongly hooked beak. It also possesses a wormlike lure on the tongue, although observers should never attempt to inspect a turtle’s mouth. Alligator snapping turtles are chiefly associated with Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi drainage systems, whereas common snapping turtles occupy a much broader range.
Large softshell turtles have flattened, flexible shells and long, tubular snouts. Painted turtles, sliders, and cooters have broader plastrons, shorter tails, and shells into which they can withdraw more effectively. Musk and mud turtles may be dark and large-headed, but they are much smaller than an adult snapping turtle.
Habitat
Common snapping turtles occupy permanent or semi-permanent freshwater habitats, including ponds, marshes, swamps, oxbows, reservoirs, drainage canals, slow rivers, and sheltered lake margins. Favored sites often contain soft mud, submerged logs, aquatic plants, undercut banks, or debris that provides concealment.
They tolerate moderately altered landscapes and may live in farm ponds, urban wetlands, and roadside impoundments. Brackish water is sometimes used near coasts, but the species is fundamentally freshwater. Individuals may travel overland when seeking mates, nesting sites, new habitat, or refuge from drying water.

Geographic Range
The native range covers much of southern Canada and the eastern and central United States, extending from the Atlantic region westward into parts of the Great Plains and south to the Gulf Coast. Distribution becomes patchier near the dry western and southwestern limits. Introduced populations occur outside the native range in parts of western North America.
Local abundance can vary greatly. A species may be widespread within a state or province yet absent from fast, cold, rocky waters or landscapes lacking suitable wetlands and nesting ground.

Behavior
Common snapping turtles are mainly aquatic and often remain partly buried in mud or concealed beneath vegetation. They may rest in shallow water with only their eyes and nostrils exposed, extending their necks to breathe. Swimming is usually deliberate, but the turtles can move rapidly when disturbed.
Defensive displays are most likely when a turtle is stranded or approached on land. It may raise its body, open its mouth, hiss, lunge, or strike. In water, escape is generally easier, and individuals commonly swim away. Snapping should therefore be understood as close-range defense rather than evidence that the turtle pursues people.

The common snapping turtle is an opportunistic omnivore. Its diet includes aquatic insects, crayfish, snails, worms, fish, frogs, tadpoles, salamanders, small turtles, carrion, and occasional birds or small mammals. Aquatic plants, algae, seeds, and fallen fruit can also form a substantial part of the diet.
Prey may be ambushed from cover or actively searched for along the bottom. Despite their reputation, snapping turtles do not simply eliminate fish or waterfowl from every pond they inhabit. Activity and Seasonal Patterns
Activity is greatest during warm months. Turtles may forage by day or night, with crepuscular and nocturnal movement common in warm weather. Unlike many basking turtles, adults seldom sit conspicuously on logs, although they may warm themselves in shallow water or occasionally bask at the surface.
In northern regions, common snapping turtles overwinter underwater, usually buried in mud, tucked beneath banks, or sheltered among submerged roots and debris. Metabolism drops sharply, and individuals can tolerate long periods with little oxygen. Spring warming brings renewed feeding and movement. Reproduction and Life Cycle
Mating occurs mainly in spring, though timing varies by latitude and local conditions. Females usually nest from late spring into early summer, often during May or June in much of the range and later in colder regions. A female may travel considerable distances from water to find open, well-drained soil, sand, gravel, garden beds, or road shoulders.
Using her hind feet, she excavates a flask-shaped cavity and deposits roughly 20–40 spherical, flexible-shelled eggs, although smaller and substantially larger clutches occur. Growth is slow, and maturity usually requires many years. Adults can survive for several decades, but eggs and juveniles experience high mortality. Long-lived breeding females are therefore especially important to stable populations.

Young and Juveniles
Hatchlings have shells only about 1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm) long. They are darker and more sharply sculptured than adults, with three distinct carapace ridges, a serrated rear shell edge, and an exceptionally long tail. Their small size can lead to confusion with musk turtles, but the tail crest and shell shape are useful clues.
Young turtles move toward water after emerging, sometimes in autumn and sometimes the following spring. They shelter in dense vegetation and shallow margins, feeding on small invertebrates, tadpoles, carrion, and plant material. Predators take many before reaching deeper cover.
Predators and Defense
Raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes, crows, and other animals commonly dig up nests. Hatchlings may be eaten by large fish, wading birds, snakes, bullfrogs, mammals, and other turtles. Large adults have fewer natural predators, although river otters, alligators, and large mammals may injure or kill them in parts of the range.
In water, camouflage and concealment provide the main defense. On land, the small plastron leaves the turtle vulnerable, so it relies on its reach, jaws, claws, and intimidating posture. The bite can cause serious injury. Never place hands near the head or front half of the shell, and never lift a snapping turtle by its tail; doing so can damage the spine and tail tissues.
Tracks, Signs, and Other Evidence
Overland tracks may show alternating impressions from broad, clawed feet, sometimes with a central tail drag. A tail mark is not always present, and tracks can be confused with those of other large turtles. Muddy slides, shallow resting depressions, and trails through aquatic vegetation may indicate regular use but are rarely diagnostic on their own.
Nest evidence includes a disturbed patch of soil and a plugged entrance over a flask-shaped chamber. A raided nest may contain fragments of white, leathery shell scattered nearby. Do not excavate an intact nest to confirm identification; disturbance can damage eggs, alter temperature and moisture, or attract predators.
Where and How to Find It
Search quiet wetland edges, vegetated pond margins, backwaters, and slow streams during late spring and summer. Early morning and evening are productive times. Watch for a head breaking the surface near aquatic plants, a dark shell resting in shallows, or a turtle crossing a road after rain.
Observe from a respectful distance with binoculars or a camera. Avoid probing mud, reaching beneath banks, or attempting to capture the turtle. Do not handle a road-crossing animal unless immediate assistance is necessary and you can follow local guidance. Keep traffic safety first, move it only in the direction it was already traveling, and never relocate it to a distant pond.
Conservation Status and Threats
The common snapping turtle is widely classified as Least Concern globally, but legal status and population condition vary by state and province. Wetland loss, road mortality, fishing gear, pollution, intentional killing, and commercial or recreational harvest can affect local populations. Because females mature slowly and may reproduce for decades, the repeated loss of breeding adults can be difficult for a population to replace.
Protecting connected wetlands, maintaining safe nesting areas, reducing vehicle strikes, and using wildlife-friendly fishing practices all help. Regulations governing possession, harvest, and nest protection differ by jurisdiction and should be checked locally.
Relationship with Humans
Common snapping turtles sometimes enter yards, gardens, farm fields, and roads while nesting or moving between wetlands. Their presence does not usually require removal. Give the turtle space, keep pets and children away, and allow it to continue on its own whenever conditions are safe.
Anglers may accidentally hook one or find a turtle entangled in line. A deeply hooked or tightly entangled animal is best handled by a wildlife rehabilitator, conservation officer, or other experienced responder. Do not cut a turtle loose while leaving loops of line wrapped around its body.
