Common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is among North America’s most familiar lawn and wayside plants. Its bright yellow flower heads, deeply toothed basal leaves, milky sap, and spherical seed heads make it easy to recognize when you consider all features together.
Although often called a wildflower, common dandelion is generally treated as a Eurasian introduction in North America. It now grows across most of the continent in lawns, fields, roadsides, gardens, disturbed ground, and other sunny habitats. Its taxonomy is unusually complicated: dandelions reproduce sexually and asexually, and botanists recognize many closely related forms or microspecies. For practical field identification, the broad name Taraxacum officinale remains widely used.

After flowering, the head closes temporarily and later reopens as a round, white seed head. Each dry fruit, technically a cypsela, ends in a narrow beak supporting a tuft of fine hairs called a pappus. The familiar “dandelion clock” breaks apart readily in the wind.

Common dandelion is a herbaceous perennial with a deep, fleshy taproot. The leafy rosette commonly spans 10–30 cm (4–12 inches), though plants in fertile ground may become larger. Flowering stalks are usually 5–40 cm tall. Plants in closely mowed lawns often bloom on very short stalks, while those among taller grasses may produce elongated scapes.
A mature crown can produce several flower stalks at once. If the crown is damaged, surviving root portions may produce new growth. The leaves remain close to the soil, allowing the plant to tolerate grazing and repeated mowing better than many upright herbs.
Blooming Season
The main flowering period is spring through early summer. Geographic Range
Native mainly to Eurasia, common dandelion has become naturalized across most of temperate North America. It is documented throughout the contiguous United States, much of Canada, Alaska, and parts of Mexico, although its abundance varies with climate, elevation, land use, and local disturbance. Similar Species and Look-Alikes

Wildlife Connections
Dandelion flower heads provide pollen and nectar to a variety of bees, flies, beetles, and butterflies. Their value is greatest in highly altered landscapes where few other flowers are available, particularly during cool spring weather. They are not, however, a complete substitute for a diverse planting of native species that blooms across the growing season.
Several birds consume the seeds, and mammals such as rabbits, groundhogs, and deer may browse the leaves. Small insects also use the rosettes for shelter. Because dandelions tolerate frequent mowing, they can maintain floral resources in places where most other flowering plants are repeatedly cut.

Native, Introduced, or Invasive?

Calling the plant “invasive” requires context. It is an aggressive lawn and agricultural weed, but it is not uniformly regulated or considered a major invader of intact natural communities. Young leaves were eaten as spring greens, roots were roasted for a dark beverage, and flower heads were used in wines, syrups, and preserves. Herbal preparations have traditionally been associated with digestion and urination, reflected in several old folk names.
Historical use does not establish that a preparation is safe or effective for treating a medical condition. Concentrated extracts and supplements may act differently from ordinary food and can interact with medications.
Is It Edible or Toxic?
Correctly identified common dandelion is generally considered edible. Young leaves are less bitter than older ones and may be eaten raw or cooked. Flower heads can be used in cooked preparations, and cleaned roots are sometimes roasted. The white latex is bitter and may irritate sensitive skin, but it is not usually considered dangerously poisonous through casual contact.
Do not harvest from roadsides, chemically treated lawns, contaminated soil, dog-walking areas, or sites where herbicide use is uncertain. Conservation attention is better directed toward protecting native dandelion species and other native meadow plants. In arctic and alpine settings, confirm identification before removal because rare or localized native Taraxacum taxa may resemble the common introduced plant.

A dandelion’s pappus is more than a simple parachute. Air moving through and around its ring of fine hairs can form a stable vortex that helps the fruit remain aloft. This efficient structure allows an extremely lightweight seed-bearing fruit to travel away from the parent plant, although most land relatively nearby.
