Columbine is a name shared by dozens of species in the genus Aquilegia. In eastern and central North America, it most often refers to wild or red columbine, Aquilegia canadensis. This graceful native perennial is recognized by its nodding red-and-yellow flowers, backward-pointing spurs, and divided, blue-green leaves.
Wild columbine grows on rocky slopes, ledges, woodland margins, and other partly shaded sites. Its flowers are especially adapted to long-tongued pollinators, including hummingbirds. Because cultivated columbines hybridize readily, flower color alone is not always sufficient for identification; consider range, spur shape, foliage, and habitat as well.
