Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a striking wetland wildflower known for its tall spikes of brilliant scarlet blossoms. Few native North American plants produce such an intense red. The tubular, two-lipped flowers are especially well suited to hummingbird pollination and often brighten streambanks, marsh edges, and other damp places from midsummer into early fall.
Despite its vivid color, cardinal flower can be surprisingly easy to overlook before blooming. Its leafy stems blend into surrounding vegetation, and populations may be scattered rather than forming broad colonies. Similar Species and Look-Alikes
Great blue lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica) is the closest common look-alike. It has a similar upright spike and two-lipped flowers, but its blossoms are blue to violet or occasionally pale, not scarlet. The two species can grow together in wet ground and may produce naturally occurring hybrids where their flowering periods overlap.
Indian pink (Spigelia marilandica) also has red tubular flowers, but each tube opens into a yellow, five-pointed star. Indian pink usually has opposite, mostly untoothed leaves and favors rich woodland habitats rather than open wetland margins.
Trumpet honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) produces red tubes attractive to hummingbirds, but it is a twining woody vine with opposite leaves and flowers in terminal clusters.
