The black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus) is a venomous pit viper of the southwestern United States and Mexico. In the United States, it occurs mainly in Arizona and parts of New Mexico; its range continues south through several mountainous regions of Mexico. It is best known for the dark, usually nearly uniform tail immediately before the rattle, a feature that contrasts with the boldly ringed tails of several neighboring rattlesnakes.

Across the back, dark blotches are commonly outlined by lighter scales. These markings may be crisp in some snakes and subdued in darker individuals. The blotches tend to narrow or merge into crossbands near the hindbody. The final section of the tail is dark brown to black and is usually much less patterned than the tail of a western diamondback or Mojave rattlesnake.

Adults carry a keratinous rattle composed of interlocking segments. A segment is added when the snake sheds, but rattles break and shedding frequency varies, so segment number does not reveal age. Newborns have a single terminal “button” and cannot produce the sustained buzzing sound of an adult.

Similar Species

Western diamondback rattlesnake: The western diamondback usually has diamond-shaped dorsal markings and bold alternating black-and-white rings immediately ahead of the rattle. The black-tailed rattlesnake instead has a mostly solid dark tail and is often encountered in rockier uplands, wooded canyons, and foothills. Habitat alone is not conclusive.

Mojave rattlesnake: Mojave rattlesnakes generally show a contrasting ringed tail and a series of dorsal diamonds or angular blotches. They are more characteristic of open desert and scrubland. Pattern variation makes distant identification difficult where ranges overlap.

Arizona black rattlesnake: The Arizona black rattlesnake may become nearly charcoal or black as an adult and occurs in wooded uplands of central Arizona. Black-tailed rattlesnakes more often retain a lighter ground color with visible blotches, but dark individuals can be challenging to identify. Range, overall pattern, and expert-quality photographs may be needed.

Tiger and ridge-nosed rattlesnakes: Tiger rattlesnakes have numerous narrow body bands and a relatively small head. In contrast, ridge-nosed rattlesnakes have a distinctive upturned ridge along the snout and often stronger pale facial lines. Never approach a snake to inspect facial scales or tail details.

Taxonomy also matters: the eastern black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus ornatus) was formerly included within C. molossus. Older books and maps may therefore show a broader United States distribution for the black-tailed rattlesnake than many current classifications recognize.

Geographic Range

Habitat

Black-tailed rattlesnakes occupy rocky foothills, mountain slopes, canyon systems, wooded drainages, grassland edges, oak woodland, pine-oak forest, and mixed scrub. They are often associated with broken terrain offering ledges, talus, rock piles, caves, mammal burrows, and shaded crevices.

They occur from relatively dry foothills into cooler montane environments and may be found near intermittent streams or other locally moist canyon habitats. Elevation varies widely across the species’ long north-to-south range. In the United States, the snake is often more strongly associated with uplands and rugged terrain than with exposed desert basins.

People are most likely to encounter this snake while hiking rocky trails, climbing around ledges, working near wood or rock piles, driving on warm roads after sunset, or visiting cabins and outbuildings near foothill habitat. Around homes, rodents, water, shade, and clutter can attract snakes or their prey.

If you see a snake, stop, locate it, and give it a wide route of escape. Keep children and pets away and do not prod, pose, move, or attempt to kill it.
